BTI is a naturally occurring bacterium that is toxic only
to mosquito larvae. During the mosquito’s larval stage,
the bacterium produces a protein crystal that is ingested
by the larvae when feeding. The crystals then dissolve
into toxic protein molecules that destroy the larvae’s
stomach lining. Within hours the larvae stop feeding and
death occurs usually within 24 to 48 hours. As BTI has a
specific mode of action, it has practically no harmful
consequences to mammals, fish or other wildlife.
