URBAN STREETSCAPE DESIGN
Bamboo Applications
Design innovations in Bamboo

THE INTENTION
·To create awareness about the usage of bamboo and its composites
·To expose the participants to the practical aspects of designing of the bamboo structures
·To generate innovative prototype bamboo designs that can be commercialised

THE PROLOGUE
Today the world is ablaze with manifold explorations in the strata of technology, infrastructure, economy and
ecology with one goal in mind: to adopt a sustainable approach towards providing quality of life. Bamboo is
one such material that has created wonders in construction technology. In rural India Bamboo is one of the
conventional materials in every walk of life. However, the predominant use of bamboo in the urban scenario
has yet to be completely exploited.
The urban streetscape not only serves vehicular and pedestrian needs, but also provides a platform where the
community living spills over. Such a conglomeration of space and function calls for intervention through
innovation to give meaning to its neglected dimensions.

THE DESIGN PROBLEM

A team (comprising 4 to 5 members) is required to design under 5 categories (all 3 from Group A and any 2
from Group B) elements of an urban streetscape listed below using Bamboo or bamboo based composite
materials. The design detailing must answer the practical issues and techniques involved in the method of
construction of a bamboo structure.

STAGE I

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION (ONLY 1 PDF file per team on arch.cogni@gmail.com) of detailed drawings of the
five selected elements of urban streetscape. The drawings shall include plan/s, elevation/s, section/s, 3D
views, concept sheet/s and any other relevant drawings required to explain the design in detail. The drawings
shall clearly express the dimensions of all elements and structure used.
A separate Registration From (attached herewith) must be filled which will be sent along with the PDF FILE
and the entries must not contain any identification mark of the participating team.

Last Date: 8 March 2010

Two designs (1 from each group) amongst the five submitted need to be executed by the team on actual scale
in BAMBOO on the field. The designs to be executed will be selected by the jury and the list displayed on the
website on www.cognizance.org.in. Twelve teams will be short listed for the second round, based upon their
drawings sent to us. In case any team is not present their chance will be given to the best team in the waiting
list.

WORKSHOP will be conducted by NMBA experts on ‘Construction Techniques of Bamboo Structures’ during
th th
Cognizance 2010 (26 -28 March 2010) prior to Stage II, which will help the participants execute their design.

STAGE II
