USE OF WASTE PLASTIC IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS

1. INTRODUCTION
Flexible pavements are those pavements which reflect the deformation of sub grade and the
subsequent layers to the surface.

Plastics are user friendly but not eco-friendly as they are non-biodegradable. Generally it is
disposed by way of land filling or incineration of materials which are hazardous. The better
binding property of plastics in its molten state has helped in finding out a method of safe
disposal of waste plastics, by using them in road laying. Modified Bitumen is one of the
important construction materials for flexible pavements.

Use of plastic waste and Crumb Rubber i.e. the rubber obtained from the waste tyres of
vehicles, in the construction of flexible pavement is gaining importance because it
increases the road life and also as well as help in decrease of pollution to the environment.
Plastic roads are very useful in the India climatic conditions of extreme heat and humid
climate. By using of this type of plastic waste in the construction of pavement can increase
the strength, durability etc.

2. LITERATURE REVIEW

1. V.Rushendrareddy., T.Surendra presented on the use of waste plastic in flexible

pavements. In this paper he used waste raw materials like plastic which gives more
strength to the bitumen as well as aggregates also which are used in the construction of
flexible pavements.

2. Prakash somani, Vikash maharaniya, Banwarilal kumawat and Rahul dev rangera
presented on Strengthen of Flexible Pavement by using Waste Plastic and Rubber. In this
paper he found that optimum percentage of waste plastic and rubber in flexible pavement
in the percentage of bitumen mix at variation of 4 to 8% waste plastic and 2 to 6% waste
rubber is to be examined.

3. Brajesh Mishra , Ravi Shankar Mishra presented on A Study on Use of Waste Plastic
Materials in Flexible Pavements. He found that there was a considerable improvement in
the properties of aggregates and bituminous mix leading to provide longer life and better
pavement performance. The use of waste plastic in bituminous concrete mix thus
contributes to construction of green roads and solves the problem of its safe disposal as
well.

3. METHODOLOGY

1. Research paper

In this paper he used Marshall testing machine to find the various properties of bitumen
like stability test, test on bulk density, variation of air voids, flow rate and VMA. The
materials used are aggregates, bitumen and plastic.

2. Research paper
In this paper he used materials like aggregates, bitumen , plastic and crumb rubber and he
performed the various test on aggregates and bitumen as per different IS code provisions.
3. Research paper
In this research the properties of Bituminous Concrete (BC) mixes Grading-1 Indian Roads
Congress (IRC: 111-2009) using waste plastics by dry process was evaluated and
comparison was made with conventional mix (0% plastic) properties. Results of various
tests performed on conventional and plastic coated aggregates (PCA).

4. Literature Review Conclusion

The coating of plastics & rubber reduces the porosity, consumption of water and improves
soundness and also reduces the voids. The roads can withstand heavy traffic and show
better durability. Bituminous plastic is used for the better performance of roads.
Bituminous concrete mix modified with waste plastic coated aggregates showed higher
Marshall Stability and higher flow value as compared to conventional bituminous concrete
mix.
