Lesson Procedure - Cardinal Directions & Location

Title of Lesson: Compass Rose / Cardinal Directions & Location

GLCEs/ CCSS:
1 – G1.0.2 Describe places using absolute location (e.g., home address) or relative location
(e.g., left, right, front, back, next to, near).

Grade Level:1

Goals/Objectives: Students will be able to identify the 4 different cardinal directions and why/how they
are used.
If time permits - -can also retouch on other locational/directional vocabulary such as below, above, under,
around, within, besides/next to, etc.

Big Ideas/Enduring Understanding: Compasses and the cardinal directions help people
navigate our world. They allow us to compare things in terms of relative distance and location,
making everyday life easier.

-After discussion/song, get the kids

refocused and set your expectations
for behavior! Explain to students that
we are going to play a little game
using the compass. In order to do so,
we need to remember to be calm and
not get too crazy so we can all hear
and enjoy the game.
-Explain directions of “Simon Says”

-Draw students attention to the
“North, South, East, and West” labels
at their designated spots around the
room. Explain to students that, unlike
when you are looking at a map,
North is not always in front/on top of
you, because as you move your
location / view moves but north stays
in the same spot. (Etc.)
-Hopefully the N/S/E/W labels are
around the room in their actual
locations! -- if not, that’s okay. Just

Simon says face West.

*If this is too easy or you want to step

job following the cardinal directions!
