• Text-based Analytical Essays
• Assessing your ability to read a text well (but
quickly), have a thought about that text, and
express those thoughts in writing.
• Advantage: you have text in front of you from
which to draw ideas
• Disadvantage: lots to do in a short amount of
time (read, think, plan, write, etc.)
• National Averages (2016):

Open Essays
• Analytical Essays drawing on your
knowledge of novels/plays that you
have read previously
• Assessing your ability to apply what
you’ve read in the past to a new
context or question/prompt.
• Advantage: you can write about
whatever you want (kind of)
• Disadvantage: no text in front of you;
requires that you know text(s)
