Lesson Idea Name: Brain Pop Jr.- Phonics
Content Area: English Language Arts
Grade Level(s): K
ELAGSEKRF3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
ISTE Standard 3 D: Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing
ideas and theories and pursuing answers and solutions.
After students and teacher practice this activity together, they will have an opportunity to work in pairs
to create a word family with 4 examples. Next, students (individually or in pairs) will create unique
rhyming sequences of their own. Students have freedom for the format of their rhymes, but will a
template available also (differentiation and support). The provided template will be in the form of a
familiar rhyme, “Down by the Bay”, where students choose two rhyming words to complete the phrase.
Students will be informally assessed on both word maps and generated rhyming sequences.
To conclude this lesson, students will have further opportunity to explore Brain Pop Jr. resources (game,
activities).
Reflective Practice:
This activity has many possibilities in the classroom. Especially for younger grades who are just learning
language and pre-literacy skills, Brain Pop Jr. resources allow for many opportunities for engagement,
exploration, and review of concepts.
