HAC90 TACHOMETER

Tachometer

On/Off
Switch

APPARATUS DESCRIPTION
The tachometer unit is used on the HVT12 Vibrations apparatus modules to control
the motor excitation speed and hence the excitation frequency. It is used primarily on
the vibration modules HVT12c and HVT12g (both of which are sold separately).

On the front panel of the HAC90 is a tachometer and on/off switch as shown in the
above image.

The tachometer display indicates the frequency at which the HAC120 motor exciter
(sold separately) is operating. The values are displayed in Hertz (Hz)

The MCB (miniature circuit breaker) is used to turn the HAC90 on and off. It is also a
Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB). This is a double pole overload cut out and will
disconnect the unit from the mains in the event of an overload or short circuit. If this
should operate during normal operation the cause should be investigated.

LVDT BNC BNC socket
RCCB socket

On the rear of the base unit are the power inlet socket and the RCCB. The RCCB
isolates the unit from the supply in the event that incoming and outgoing currents do
not balance by more than 30mA. (As in leakage-to-earth situation). The blue lever
should be positioned to the ‘ON’ position. To test the RCCB functions, simply press
the orange button. This will trip the RCCB and flip the blue lever to the ‘OFF’ position.
After this test, simply flip the blue lever back to the ‘ON’ position. If this cannot be
achieved and the blue lever will not flip into the ‘ON’ position investigate the cause.
TURN OFF THE SUPPLY TO THE UNIT FIRST.
The power lead supplied with the unit fits into the power inlet socket. It can only be
inserted in one orientation. A label is attached above or below this socket to identify
to the user what voltage is to be used for this unit. (Different countries will require
different supply voltages).

ELECTRICAL CONNECTION:
Where possible we endeavour to supply the power lead with the correct power plug
fitted. Should the unit not be supplied with a power plug attached to the end of the
power lead then the wiring should be as follows:
The colour coding of the cable is as follows:
110 V~ LINE/LIVE BROWN
NEUTRAL BLUE
EARTH GREEN/YELLOW
230 V~ LINE/LIVE BROWN
NEUTRAL BLUE
EARTH GREEN/YELLOW
BEFORE UNDERTAKING ANY WORK ON THE UNIT MAKE SURE ALL POWER
IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE UNIT AND THE WORK IS UNDERTAKEN BY A
COMPETENT ELECTRICIAN.
Before wiring the power lead and plugging it into the base unit, ensure that the
voltage label on the machine corresponds to the locally available supply and the
cable will be connected to a suitable fixed power supply via a fused outlet (14Amps
for 220/240V operation and 28Amps for 110/130V operation) that complies with the
local regulations.
220/240V Line to Neutral Units
Note that where specified at the time of ordering, the unit may be operated from
either a 220/240V (specified 50 or 60Hz) Line to Neutral power supply.
NOTE the unit MUST NOT be operated from two phases of a 380/440V Line to
Line supply. If any doubts exist, consult a qualified electrician BEFORE
connecting the unit.
For a 220/240V (50Hz) AND 110/130V (60Hz) Line to Neutral supply: -
The BROWN cable is the LINE or LIVE
The BLUE cable is the NEUTRAL
The GREEN AND YELLOW cable is the EARTH.
Note that for safe operation the Green/Yellow cable should be connected to a low
impedance earthing point that complies with the local regulations. Also on the back of
the HAC90 are two sockets labelled as Speed Control and Tachometer Sensor.
The speed control socket is used to connect the HAC110 Speed controller to the
HAC90. The tachometer socket is used to connect the tachometer sensor from the
HAC120 to the HAC90.
You will also notice that there is a socket for the LVDT sensor which is used to
monitor the actual beam movement during testing.
Directly beneath the LVDT and Tachometer sockets are two BNC sockets. These
allow the respective outputs form the LVDT and tachometer to be fed directly into an
oscilloscope or HVT12k Data Acquisition System using the BNC leads provided.
The Tachometer sensor is used as a trigger signal also.

HAC110 SPEED CONTROLLER

Speed Control
Potentiometer

APPARATUS DESCRIPTION
The Speed Controller is connected directly to the HAC90 Tachometer (sold
separately) and is used to control the speed of the motor used within the HAC120
motor Exciter (sold separately).
On the front panel it has a speed control potentiometers that increases the speed
when turned clockwise and decreases the speed when rotated anti-clockwise.

On the rear panel is the connection lead and connector to attach the HAC110 to the
HAC90 via the socket labelled speed control on the rear of the HAC90.
There is also a socket that is labelled 24Vdc Motor. This socket is used to power the
HAC120 Motor Exciter (sold separately). The connector from the cable of the
HAC120 is plugged into this socket.

HAC130 LVDT

For monitoring the vertical beam displacement from the HVT12c or HVT12g modules
(each sold separately) an LVDT (Linear Variable Displacement Transducer) is used.
The LVDT has a spring loaded shaft which touches on the underneath of the rigid
steel beam. As the beam moves vertically the LVDT signal can be monitored by
using oscilloscope software (not supplied), or a storage oscilloscope, HAC50 (not
supplied).

LVDT
Stand

Stand Base

HVT12f Frame

The LVDT is supplied with 10Vdc and gives a ratio-metric voltage output (dc).
The connection wires are as follows:
RED = +10Vdc
BLUE and GREEN (joined) = 0Vdc
WHITE = Output signal Vdc
The travel of the LVDT is ± 15mm.
The sensitivity of the LVDT is 350mV/mm for a 10Vdc excitation voltage
The LVDT connects directly into the back of the HAC90 where it obtains its excitation
voltage and signal conditioning. The BNC socket on the rear of the HAC90 is used to
connect the LVDT signal to an external capturing device such as the HVT12k or
storage oscilloscope (both sold separately).
The stand to which the LVDT is attached can be adjusted in height, orientation and
axial beam position by simply slackening the hand knobs and bolts accordingly.
