 BIOGRAFICOS:
Nacido en un pueblo próspero muy cercano a Chicago en 1899, de padre médico y madre
música, la aventura de Ernest Hemingway comenzó a sus 19 años, cuando participó
voluntariamente como chofer de ambulancias durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. Allí fue
herido gravemente por primera vez.

Luego de regresar a casa y trabajar unos meses como periodista, viaja a París, donde
vive -casi ininterrumpidamente- durante 7 años, hasta 1928 y se integra al círculo de
intelectuales estadounidenses conocido como “la generación perdida”, que incluye a
figuras como Ezra Pound, John Steinbeck y William Faulkner. Comienza en estos años
también su conocida vinculación con España.
En los años 30 Ernest Hemingway vive la mayor parte del tiempo en Cayo Hueso, Florida,
realizando constantes travesías por el Caribe e, incluso, viaja a África. En 1937 se
traslada a España para cubrir la Guerra Civil. En 1939 escogió a Cuba como residencia
de invierno y entre 1944 y 1945 cubrió como corresponsal la Segunda Guerra Mundial,
recibiendo una estrella de bronce por su valentía.

En 1954 Ernest Hemingway sufre dos accidentes de aviación graves en África; mientras
convalecía, recibió la noticia de haber sido galardonado con el Premio nobel de literatura.
Un año antes había ganado el Premio Pulitzer por su famosa novela El viejo y el mar.
Durante los últimos años de su vida, su salud física se deterioró considerablemente, lo
que le generó además una profunda depresión. Fue tratado varias veces con
electrochoques en la prestigiosa Clínica Mayo. La imposibilidad de superar estas
dolencias y mejorar su ánimo le llevaron al suicidio, el 2 de julio de 1961, en su cabaña de
Ketchum, Idaho.

Ernest Hemingway estuvo casado cuatro veces y tuvo 3 hijos. Tanto su padre, como dos
de sus hermanos y una nieta (la conocida actriz y modelo Margaux Hemingway) también
cometieron suicidio.
