The American Cinema Editors is an association for film and television editors based in
Los Angeles, California. It is a society based around the recognition of the entertainment
industry’s top editors. They are dedicated to educating the public through friendly dialogue
among the members of the association and benefitting the industry community. One of the
activities they participate in is the ACE Visitor Editor Program, where they focus on education
and outreach, establishing the film editing basics and even making films for certain university
programs. They also have a whole section of their site dedicated to students. This section has
many different categories, such as internship programs and student editing competitions. They
have several fellowships for amateurs to come in and learn the trade under an intense program
which many professionals experienced. The American Cinema Editors hold awards for the best
editors in each category of film.
The site for the American Cinema Editors association is a useful tool for my internship
and research for many reasons. I could always look back to the site for inspiration and education.
For example, if I was confused on how to incorporate a certain stylistic technique into a film I
am editing for someone, I could learn the topic from this association. I could either learn from
the site directly, or research a famous editor and study their technique and how they work.
Therefore, I learn more about the process of editing from a credible source, rather than a how-to
YouTube video. Educating myself on the basics of editing from this site, combined with my
experience from computer science with other sources, will really help me understand what I am
doing for what I research. I could definitely use the part of the site dedicated to students in the
field because the audience is directed toward people like me. Even studying the application
process for internships and fellowships gives me an idea for the type of work I should be seeking
out at my internship in order for me to understand my research for film and computer science.
They have several videos which I have watched already titled “Editors on editing” where I can
learn directly from people like Tom Cross, chief editor of La La Land and ACE member. I am
excited to use this site and learn from it in my research.

This article identifies a point in history when the film industry shifted to digital editing,
which would then revolutionize the scope of Hollywood production forever. Now, it is essential
for an editor today to work digitally and understand how the software they are using works. This
article is dated but is still relevant today, as my goal for research is to understand programming
used for the software of these applications.
The article is going to help me in my research not only because of the content it has (not
so much as a short article), but how it is pointing me in the right direction for digital editing. I
should not just focus on film editing alone, but I should really focus on the digital aspect given
its relevance in today’s world. At my internship, I have access to a source of a grammy award
winning music editor, and I will be able to learn directly from him for my research process on
narrowing down my focus.

Brown, Andrew R. Making Music With Java: An Introduction to Computer Music, Java
Programming and the JMusic Library. Lulu, 2005.

This source is a book titled Making Music With Java by Andrew Brown about the use of
java applications with music, and how to make music and sounds with the java programming
language. Through the jMusic library, it seems as if there are endless possibilities to musical
craftsmanship, even inside a programming language. An Integrated Development Environment,
IDE (workspace for Java code input and compilation), already has the capabilities to store
different frequencies and sound. With these capabilities, programmers have the power to run
efficient programs for desired software systems. Both basic and complex ideas can be derived
from this book and help any programmer with the desire to learn music in a coding language.
Although coding music in Java with jMusic libraries is not used heavily among
professionals, this book is beneficial to me because it is written in a program which I am most
familiar with. I already have the knowledge of a java developer, so this source can be digested
and read easily for education. After reading this book, I have the power to understand how music
can be integrated into a program. I am already understanding certain relationships in the first
chapters that I can see are integrated into music editing software at my workplace. One example
could be how different frequencies (sounds) can be stored as instances of a phrase class, being
stored as data and having the versatility to be used throughout a java class. Eventually, these data
variables can be manipulated into complex sounds, such as using a basic for-loop to run a scale
in a certain key determined by the developer. In editing software, this is useful to compare a
fixed sound or frequency to what is recorded by the artist, judging what the sound should be.
This book, Making Music in Java, will definitely be a very important help conceptually for
understanding deeper research into the realms of audio programming in editing software.

Over the years, a lot has stayed the same about movies and storytelling, but editing, “the
art and craft of arranging pictures and sound to tell the story envisioned by the writer, producer,
and director” has changed the most. Computers play a tremendous role in post production, such
as in special effects or animation. Films used to be edited by an optical chemical medium until
the videotape recorder came around to capture images electromagnetically, making the process
easier and less expensive. Then, during the 1980’s and 1990’s, videotapes became more
advanced for common people in the economy. After film and videotapes, computers
revolutionized the editing process forever. People were able to use personal computers that were
powerful enough to create and edit while using the speed of electronics and the low cost of the
video world. Computer based non-linear editors (NLEs) distinguish from the old style of film
editing (cutting film and pasting together) by organization where people can easily transfer video
to their computers in an easy to use format. Now, the art of compression is a must when using
high storage video files, especially in high definition, in order for the computer to process the
files without ruining quality. The best film editing software compresses the film and digitizes it
into great footage without loosing its quality. After the film is in the system, the user is able to go
through with the creative process of building the video program scene by scene into what they
want.
This source is very helpful to me in understanding the technical process of using a certain
type of video file to use in a particular system. I now understand how video files distinguish from
film and video digital, not only in appearance and recording, but in how they are treated by video
editing software. For example, using film to record footage would require a very expensive
system which is linear (not an NLE), and would need a much more careful process in editing as
opposed to easily compatible video recording for computer software. In my research, I hope to
understand how a video editing software is programmed, and now I conceptualize how important
compression is for the efficiency of a computer program in editing. This source was very helpful
in that regard so I can now focus on complicated and complex compression algorithms and
learning how those are implemented into the design of a professional system. One section of this
article focuses on the future of film editing as a whole. Hopefully, the high functioning,
expensive, and professional software will have no geographic limitations in the future. Learning
about something new and revolutionary, even in an industry which I am an amateur, is exciting
for potential research in this area.

Hockberg, Carol S. "Adobe Creative Cloud." Technology and Learning, Mar. 2014.
The article from the magazine Technology and Learning explains what the Adobe
Creative Cloud is. The collection of programs for Adobe CC is used widely among both
professional and amateur film and music editors as a means for taking their production skills to
the next level. Ever since 2014, all Adobe applications have been taken to the next level and
given new enhancements. For example, inDesign has a QR code scanner for any product to be
edited while Photoshop CC has a shake reduction feature making the picture a lot more clear
with a better compression technique.
In my internship for the Root Studio, Adobe Creative Cloud is the standard set of
software tools used daily for customers and coworkers. The varied set of applications addresses
each type of artistry. For example, the Photography workshop uses Photoshop, the audio lab uses
Adobe Audition, and the film editing studio uses Premiere CC, all updated to its latest forms and
running at a high standard. I needed to cite my use for these applications because it is very
important to my understanding of music and film editing as a whole in reference to my research.

Karen Isailovic, one of my coworkers, is a founder of the Root Studio and helps me
through the day to day process during my internship hours. She counts as a valuable source
because she helps me think artistically about tasks I am given. Karen is also a leader in outreach
and pointed me in the right direction for my marketing plan. She is a painter and believes
everyone can unlock their creativity if they allow themselves to do so.

Raquel Keller, my mentor, has been working at the Root Studio ever since it was
established. After completing her undergraduate degree in photography from RIT, she studied
graphic design at American University. The combination of her fine arts and graphic design
education has allowed her to use a very creative style in her work. She is a native of the
Washington D.C area and enjoys painting nature-inspired art in her home studio when she has
free time.

Lazzarini, Victor, and Richard Boulanger. The Audio Programming Book. MIT Press, 2010.

A large portion of what I may be doing at my internship is using and understanding music
editing and the software that is used for it. A very important interest of mine is computer science,
and this book teaches and shows the art of computer programming with audio. This book covers
the very broad topic and art of audio programming, hench the title the “The Audio Programming
Book”. Using C and C++ languages, it thoroughly explains concepts which I would like to have
an in depth understanding of for my internship. This way, I do not have to just use the editing
software I am presented, but I understand how it works, therefore allowing me to use it to my
advantage and benefit the company more than I would without this knowledge.
Learning from this book is definitely feasible to read with my background knowledge in
programming and the implementation of C and C++ designs. I am excited to learn how bitrate
reduction can be manipulated through audio processing, and I think this will benefit me in my
research project. Many of the topics it covers relate to both my internship at Root Studio and
what I would like to pursue in life, combining my music background with my computer science
background. Therefore, I feel like the desire for this knowledge can help me go deeper and do
great research. Additionally, it covers Xcode for the macintosh which I am interested in learning
more about, and could possibly do some research on its relevance in music software in the real
world. Also, I believe this book is extremely credible since it is published by the MIT Press and
used as a textbook at MIT. Centralizing my focus for research on the programming of the editing
side will be beneficial for me to really understand what is going on at my internship, and in turn
allowing me to develop my skills and benefit the company. Benefitting the company by helping
customers will aid me in research since I will understand how the editing software really works.
Reading a book at this professional college level will be helpful for understanding programming
audio concepts at a high level, resulting in applying my skills to the real world. Using the
knowledge and information gained from studying this book could give me an extreme advantage
for building my own audio software applications in the future.

Marc Moreau, my coworker at the Root Studio, is a two-time grammy award winning
artist and is very knowledgeable in the field of music editing and audio recording. So far, he has
taught me several different techniques for recording, compression, and editing for both artistry
and technology. I have learned that both are equally important to acquire the best sound possible
for a great product. Recently, I visited an audio recording quick start guide hosted by Marc to
figure out the basics through a teaching experience designed by him. In this guide, I learned
topics that covered a lot of information from proper audio cabling to microphone techniques and
compression reverbs.

This magazine source was found in the database called Science in Context, and contains
information about the beginnings of film editing software dating back to 2004. The findings in
this article are based around the main idea that the average movie maker can design and edit their
home made movies straight from the source. It lists the steps of the editing process in commands,
including “ease transitions between scenes” and “add titles, subtitles, and credits” (Morgenstern
par. 9). The idea of the title for “tedious raw footage” is just grouping average people into a
category who may have filmed free-hand by themselves into a product that is not very appealing.
But, the idea of this article is to show that anyone can pick up the basic editing techniques.
Therefore, using the right software is important for the advancement of storytelling in a
particular film.
I will be using this source for my research project because it makes my point about video-
editing software’s significance credible. I feel as though video editing software can be learned by
anyone, but it takes a new level of skill to understand the programming behind the system. My
goal is to set out to understand the uses of video editing software in artists’ applications so I can
help them and learn from their experiences. If I can truly understand how the editing software
described in this article works, then I will be able to benefit myself in future endeavours for film
and computer science. This article is ultimately a basic start for me in my studies so I understand
the basic functions of video-editing. From the basics, I can extend myself into the deeper studies
of designing a program like Premiere or iMovie.

This is a blog article about the Pro Tools audio editing and compression system that is
used heavily in the audio recording industry. The people writing this article are assumed experts
in the field of professional music and audio editing, and the mission for writing this blog is not
an advertisement, but more of a helpful guide on choosing the most beneficial audio system for
the customer. Acknowledging that people need help choosing and understanding the uniqueness
of this system, they enumerate that possible benefits and misconceptions about the audio tools
provided for this system, and explain how it works. They go through which plug-ins and latency
features it contains, and why it is important for the user of the software. The audience of this
article is professionals looking for which tools system to purchase and why certain systems are
better than others.
This article is partially helpful for me in research, but very important for me to
understand because I will be using the Pro Tools System with both my coworkers and the
customers of the Root Studio. Understanding the basics of the Pro Tools system and what people
or students in the studio will be looking for is essential for my work and being a good
contributing member of the team. Hopefully I can use this so I can be a better worker, and
therefore learn and understand the software being used on the job. If I can be a productive
worker, I will be able to do better research for this project.

The web page for the Root Studio, my new place of work, intends to communicate a
message to potential customers that they have mentors who can help them with many types of
artistic performance. People search this site if they are interested in setting up a mentorship
where they can “create, learn, and collaborate” in an environment where they can ellevate their
artistic practice, such as photography, music, film, writing, or painting. In this website, I can
learn more about each of those individual aspects of the company.
They provide a helpful description for the specialized technological tools they have at the
studio which can aid them in mentoring artists of all talents. For example, the website lists
“Studio C” as “The Digital Lab” where multiple enhanced workstations can be used for music
editing, and a whole suite of professional software is provided. My focus will vary depending on
the needs of the company and what they would like me to do for them. Although I have skills
that are focused around computer science, I know I will be exposed to a broad scope of topics
which I will learn. Hopefully I can gain some outside perspective from the artistic side of
operations as opposed to the programming and software design. Information about the company
and what it uses to operate is useful for me because it gives me a better understanding about what
to expect when I work, and what I can do to prepare for upcoming work days.

Computer Scientists at Stanford have figured out a new way to lessen the hassle of film
editing in terms of time consumption. They have created a tool that helps with the rough cuts and
“audiovisual narratives”. This basically works by sifting through film cuts for recognition of
patterns, a bit like artificial intelligence. The software, in this case, can actually implement
mathematical constraints which are usually completed by the editor, thus lessening the workload.
This is essential for the common editor in the entertainment industry today. Allowing an artist to
work on what they really prioritize and focus themselves on a particular piece of work is
amazing. The overall importance of this article in today’s world is how it exemplifies the new
found efficiency as an effect of computer science and modern software.
This is useful for me because it provides a background of film editing, which I will be
experiencing at the Root Studio, and it includes the relevance of computer science in this field
which is a potential research project for me. In order to help other people achieve what they want
out of their personal projects at the studio, I need to understand the basics (at least) of film
editing so I can point them in the right direction. My research is focused on all the aspects that
contribute to the final product derived from rough cuts and footage. From the perspective present
in the article, they explain how “it typically takes a professional editor about 90-180 minutes to
build a rough cut for 1-2 minute scenes, but with this tool, an editor could make many rough cuts
in a few minutes” (Stanford par. 10). Cutting down the time spent doing useless cuts and edits,
an editor can now “focus on the important parts of the job” (Stanford par. 11) and spend more
time figuring out how they can use it to aid the storytelling aspect. This is applicable to my
internship because focusing on software could allow me to spend more time on perfecting the
product efficiently, without a useless waste of time. After reading this article, I can now point
myself in the right direction and focus more towards software and perfecting my talents with
those used in the industry.

industry. The main idea of this article in the website Phys.org was how the film and
entertainment is not portrayed as computer science friendly, while in reality, the film industry is
dependent on computer science. Computer science in the media is ever important in today’s
world, but sometimes
The University of Southern California has a very well respected and world renowned film
program, so this source is credible and applicable to my use. This article will not help me in my
research directly, but it sheds light on my situation at Root Studio for the significance of
computer science as a factor in artistry with music, film, photography, and other arts. Computer
science may sometimes be viewed as an object study with few applications, but it really is
important for all aspects of editing and the creation of a final film product.

Weynand, Diana. Final Cut Express HD. Berkeley, Peachpit Press, 2006.

The book Final Cut Express HD by Diana Weynand explains the basics of digital video
editing on Apple computer software. It includes how to make the best use out of software on the
computer for home use. This book emphasizes that film editing is an important piece to crafting
a film and its story to make sure the final product is useful to the artist in the end. For this to
happen, the editing needs to be as carefully crafted as the storytelling. Principles likes these are
what is important to the needs of a filmmaker and artist. While explaining certain ideas like color
paneling and manipulating audio effects, the focus does not stray from the Apple design.
This source points me in the right direction for my research because it gives me an idea in
mind on how to navigate a film editing layout on Apple. The reason I chose to briefly study this
material is because I will mostly just learn through the Adobe Creative Cloud at my internship
for Root Studio, but I wanted to have some prior knowledge for basic editing. Therefore, the
Final Cut Express HD will not directly be involved in my research, but it should be included as a
source since it guided me through my first steps into video editing.

How to get students in the door?

● Social Media - students can be presented with a specific art or desire from
topics and art here at Root Studio through social media outreach. For
example, using the Instagram account to give an example about a teen’s
experience could attract different groups of kids.

● Invite students to share their own ideas while letting them understand that
their creativity and interests are important to them (could there be an
advertisement for this?)

● Target audience - Students who are deeply involved in music who may
already be writing their own material and do not have a place where they
could hear themselves at a professional level. We could also focus on
targeting students who just maybe want to play and find their own
creativeness. Advertising the equipment and level of equipment
(professional) that Root Studio has could be attractive for kids.

● Reaching out to clubs oriented around each genre, then ask each leader or
spokesperson to represent them and visit the Root Studio / Then we could
pitch our mission and they could spread the word back to their friends
and/or club

● Potential Goals - Spreading the word and having a presence in the music
department or club departments. Number of students coming in the Studio

does not have to be specific to one person. Next, post the material on any

keeping an interested follower base
