In NTPC-Simhadri, Stage-I (2 X 500MW) we are having the GCB Scheme (i.

e GCB will be
there in between the Generator and Generator Transformer and in 400KV Level one circuit
Breaker will be there in between the Generator Transformer and 400KV Bus). In This type
of GCB Scheme, we have the flexibility to back charge the Generator Transformer before the
unit get synchronized. With the Flexibility of back charging, we will ensure the healthiness
of the Generator transformer and unit transformers prior to the generator synchronization.
Earlier we used to do to the back charging. But due to failure of some GT's during the back
charging we have adopted the procedure of forward charging only. But the with the help of
Controlled switching device again we can do the back charging of GT. Back charging of the
GT improves the unit bus availability and reduce the dependency of the station
transformer. (As Stage-I is having only one Station Transformer which is common for both
unit-1 and 2).

During the Switching of transformer, the equipment draws heavy inrush current and there
are some instances in which transformers got failed during the switching. Earlier we used
to do the GT Back charging, but from the past few years we have stopped the GT Back
charging, now a day we are doing the forward charging only. With this forward charging,
until and unless we synchronize the generator to the grid, we cannot ensure the
healthiness of the GT and UTs.
With the Controlled Switching device (CSD), we can do the GT Back charging without
having any stress on the transformer. The Control switching device will optimizes the
switching operations of the circuit breaker with respect to the phase relative to the current
or voltage.

With Reference to KT Meet Resolutions 2017, Control Switching device has to be installed
in stage-Units on trail basis to take further
