NATIVE AMERICANS
The first Americans, known in English as “Native Americans”, still have their traditions,
such as the pow pow, a type of party where different tribes meet and sing and dance.
TEEPEE
Today Native Americans live in simple but modern houses. However at pow wows, they
sleep in traditional tents called “teepees”. In the old days, teepees were made of animal
skins, but modern teepees are made of canvas.

DREAMCATCHER
A dreamcatcher stops bad dreams. Bad dreams are caught in the web, while good
dreams come in through a hole in the centre.
Dreamcatcher are decorated with feathers or beads.
DANCING
Pow wows have dance competitions. Dancers wear clothes decorated with feathers and
beads. Singers provide the music for the dancing.
A POW WOW
A pow wow is a traditional gathering of Native Americans. At pow wows, Indians of all
tribes sing, dance and have fun. It is a time to see old friends and make new ones. It is
also a way of keeping their traditions.
JEWELLERY
Native Americans make beautiful jewellery with silver, turquoise, shells, beads and
stones. They were making jewellery many years before the Europeans arrived in
America.
RODEO COMPETITIONS
Rodeo is a Native American tradition. There are rodeo competitions for adults and
