“Evaluating Combat Leadership: How Militaries Improve During

Conflict”

This project develops a set of formal models that show how bureaucratic
leaders may effectively evaluate their subordinates. The models derive the
conditions under which leaders may rely upon the subordinates to monitor
themselves are report to the leader. Using cases studies and two novel data
sets regarding the personnel outcomes and performance of the US military
during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, the dissertation
confirms the models’ predictions and illuminates enduring puzzles in the
extant literature.
