DEPARTMENT OF BIO-TECHNOLOGY

274
DEPARTMENT OF BIO-TECHNOLOGY

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Biotechnology was started in July 2000 with the mission to create and transmit state -
of - the - art knowledge in biosciences and help to commercialize biotech ventures. The department is
offering a four-year undergraduate programme (B.Tech. Biotechnology), a two-year masters programme
(M.Tech. Biotechnology) and research degree programmes (M.S. and Ph.D.). The department has good
facilities with modern equipment like Thermal Cycler (Eppendorf), Gel Documentation System (Geldoc
Mega - Total Lab), Phase Contrast/ Dark Field Microscope (Zeiss), ELISA Reader (Labsystem), CO2
Incubator (Sanyo), Bio-reactor 2 litre (New Brunswick), Liquid Chromatography System (Akta Prime, GE
Pharmacia) and Fluidized Bed Drier. The department also has well established bioinformatics lab with 32
Pentium IV computers with Windows and Linux OS. The department library has eleven International
journals, one National Journal and five news bulletins.

The department has established the following laboratories: Bioprocess, Bioinformatics, Genetic
Engineering, Immunology, Microbial Technology, Enzymology and Biotechnology Application
Development. The Department is concentrating research in the field of enzyme technology, transcription
control, molecular pathogenesis, plant molecular biology, molecular genetics and fermentation process.
Expertise in the following areas is available in the department to offer consultancy and testing:

1 Fermentation process economization

2 Hapten modification for immunogenicity
3 Enzyme application technologies

The department has scientific interaction with industries like Senthil Papain and Food Products (P) Ltd.,
Coimbatore and T. Stanes Company Ltd., Coimbatore.

A brief on research activities

The Department of Biotechnology is concentrating research in the field of enzyme technology,

transcription control, molecular pathogenesis, plant molecular biology, molecular genetics, development
of biosensors and fermentation process.

Research In the field of transcription regulation involves the study of control of gene expression in
mammalian cells using adenosine deaminase gene (ADA). The level of expression of ADA gene in
mouse tissues exhibits a wide range, in a tissue specific manner. Control at the level of transcription
elongation is one of the mechanisms to influence such a high variation in tissue specific expression. A
sequence of about 0.2 kb has been shown where transcription pauses, and thus perhaps contributes to
the regulation of differential expression of this gene. Using transient expression assays, biochemical
screening and sequencing the inserts, it is proposed to further study the ADA and other regulatory
sequences involved in transcription pausing.

Another project is in the area of molecular pathogenesis to understand the genetic and molecular basis of
high-level gentamicin resistance in Enterococci faecalis strains in this region and evaluate potential
molecular markers which could be used in the epidemiology of nosocomial enterococcal infection.

The Department is working on the development of capillary ELISA based immunosensor for multianalyte
detection, optical biosensor for air quality monitoring, and software tool for predicting microbial
dissemination through atmosphere.
In the field of fermentation process development, the research is concentrated on exploring efficient
methods for producing bioproducts of commercial value. In this direction, department is carrying out a
DST funded project on extractive production of L-asparaginase, a therapeutic enzyme, from Escherichia
coli. Other area of interest in this field is bacterial exoploysaccharides, which may find applications in food
and pharmaceutical industry. Research is also initiated in the department in the following fields: DNA

275
based diagnostics for Factor V thrombophilia mutant identification using PCR RFLP Techniques •
Specialty animal fibres, Cashmere and mohair identification and detection of wool adulterants by DNA
markers • In silico analysis of flowering genes with relevance to functional genomics • Vibrio cholerae
genome analysis using bioinformatic tools for vaccine candidates identification • Diagnostics of
mycobacterium tuberculosis strains using DNA based markers • Development of microbial fuel cell •
Development of DNA isolation and purification kits • Selenoprotein involvement in Neurological disorders •
Nutrient management in plants.

The department is also involved in technology transfer to the upliftment of society. Extension project on
popularization of mushroom cultivation technology among women and tribal population of Karamadai
block of Coimbatore District has been initiated through DBT funding. Spawn production and infrastructure
for demonstration and cultivation of mushroom at the villages are underway. The department is also
involved in maintaining and functioning of Vermicompost units in the campus and also in hostel at PSG
College of Technology, Coimbatore.

DEPARTMENT OF

MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER APPLICATION

289
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The department of Mathematics had a modest beginning with only three faculty members when the
institute was established in 1951. Since then it has steadily grown in size and stature. Presently the
department is referred to as Department of Mathematics and Computer Applications and has 50
members on its rolls qualified in the areas of Mathematics (Pure/ Applied) Operations Research and
Computer Science. Initially the department was offering courses on Engineering Mathematics to the
undergraduate students of Engineering. In the year 1958, when ME courses were introduced in the
college, the department started offering courses on Applied Mathematics and Applied Statistics to
postgraduate students of Engineering. The department expanded its academic activities gradually and
the department supported these courses by offering subjects on Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics,
and Business Mathematics, etc. Though initially the Department started as a Service Department
teaching Mathematics to BE, BTech, BSc(AS), B.Sc (AFT), B.Sc(CT), B.Sc(IT), ME, M.Tech, MBA
students of the college, it began offering M.Sc.(Applied Mathematics) course of its own from the year
1975 with specialization in the areas of Applied Mathematics, Operations Research and Computer
Science.

The Department of Electronics, Govt. of India, identified the college as an institution for offering a three
year postgraduate course in Computer Applications and the department has taken up the responsibility of
conducting the three year Master of Computer Applications course(MCA) in the year 1983. For the first
time in the country a Five Year integrated M.Sc. (Software Engineering) course was started in the year
1997. M.Sc. Theoretical Computer Science, a five year integrated course was introduced in 2007. It is an
innovative research oriented programme in collaboration with leading industries to augment human
resources of the R&D divisions of software houses. With the granting of Autonomous Status to the
college in the year 1978 the department has been taking active measures to revise and update the
contents of various courses. Research courses leading to the M.Phil degree in Applied Mathematics was
introduced in the year 1978 and M.Phil degree in Computer Science from the year 1989. Bharathiar
University has granted affiliation to start PhD programme in Computer Science from the year 1992. Over
the years the department has produced more than 400 MSc (Applied Maths) 790 MCAs, 340 M.Sc (SE),
80 MPhils and 35 PhDs. The products of the department are well received in India and abroad. During the
year 2007-2008, Sixteen M.Sc. Applied Mathematics, Forty six MCA students and Thirty six M.Sc.
(Software Engineering) got placed in leading Industries/Organisations through campus placement. The
department has been actively involved in various research activities and provides programmes like M.Phil
in (Computer Science) and Ph.D in Mathematics & Computer Science. The department is also fully
equipped in terms of the latest hardware and software. Various laboratories like Mathematical Computing
Lab, PSG-TCS Centre of Excellence in Software Engineering have been set up in collaboration with
various projects and industries.

A brief on research activities

The department is actively involved in research activities by means of paper publications sponsored
projects and conferences. Both faculty and research scholars of the department published 12 papers of
which 8 were in International Journals and 4 in National Journals. Faculty members also attended various
Conferences both at the National and International level and presented papers. In the era of Information
Technology, trust and privacy are the foremost requirements. The doctoral research students of the
department are pursuing research in major areas of Graph Theory, Reliability Engineering, Soft Computing,
Cryptography, Data Mining and Queuing Theory. During the last academic year, two candidates have
submitted their thesis. 28 candidates are presently undergoing Ph.D Programme in the department. The
department has also been conducting regular R & D Seminar on a weekly basis to foster research activities

4.3.1. Sponsored research activities - Abstract

1. Directed Basic Research in Smart and Secure Environment

"Directed basic research in smart and secure environment" is a collaborative research project by the following
eight institutions. IIT Madras, Anna University, Pondicherry University, NIT, Trichy, PSG College of Technology,
Thiagaraja College of Engineering, Madurai, Madurai Kamaraj University and Alagappa University. In the era
of Information Technology, trust and privacy are the foremost requirements. In this project we propose to build a
distributed framework for a smart and secure environment and to develop applications for secure transaction, non-
invasive diagnosis and cure, e-learning and e-banking. This involves profiling an operating system based on a
security architecture and then developing a framework for secure transactions. Our part in the project is to provide
the security architecture, to produce efficient digital signatures for applications. By designing new algorithms and
function, efficiency of the digital signatures can be improved. Using verifiable encryptino as a building block, we
resolve the problem of dispute if it exists. All the eight institutions will be connected by network and this will be the
test bed for this project. Duration of this project is three years.

2. Investigation of Intelligent Security and Privacy Protocols for Smart Card Applications

The operation of Smart cards calls for high end security and privacy protocols to provide absolute defense against
malicious threats that have risen to monstrous proportions. The objective is to investigate methods leading to
“intelligent” protocols for smart card applications by a healthy integration of Computational Intelligence techniques.
The objectives of this project are to investigate key management for intelligent and secure multicasting using
Anonymous Authentication Protocol, to explore the application of Hybrid Neural Networks and swan intelligence in
Intrusion detection and to investigate the application of Evolutionary algorithms/Neural Networks for authentication
mechanisms which involve bio-metric identification, in smart cards.
