Grade Level: 6th grade Content Area: Reading/ELA Basic Productivity Tool Used: Sway Standards Addressed: ELAGSE6RL9 Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics.
Bloom’s Level of Critical Thinking:
Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating Description of how to implement in the class: Students will be introduced to graphic novels during this lesson. SWAY will help students learn more about graphic novels and see the importance of them. They will see where graphic novels started and be given examples to compare and contrast the different types of graphic novels. After the lesson, students will be expected to analyze a given graphic novel and share their first thoughts on the novel-pictures, graphics, dialogue, cover, etc. After sharing their thoughts, we will read the novel together. The students will go back to their original thoughts and will reflect on graphic novels after reading it. Students will then compare and contrast graphic novels, comics and other types of novels with each other. They will share what they like about it and what could be better. Using Sway to share this lesson with students is a great idea. Sway allows students to see images of what comics and graphic novels have in common as well as their differences. It allows students to see different examples that I added at the end of the lesson. Sway also has a slide about the importance of graphic novels and incorporating them in the classroom. This is extremely important and can help with differentiating for our students. Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): The lesson I have created just involves an introduction into graphic novels and comparing/contrasting them with other forms of text. I believe this activity has a level 2 or level 3 for LoTi levels. The students are exploring and grasping the concept of graphic novels and responding to this lesson by responding to a prompt and comparing/contrasting the different forms of texts. Later in the unit and after discussing more about graphic novels and other types of text, I will have students create their own comic strip about graphic novels. That will represent a level 5 for LoTi levels because the student will be creating and it will be student lead since they are accomplishing and creating on their own. The students will be given access to a website that is easy to use and allows them to create the comic on there if they don’t want to do it by hand. Providing other options for students to create a comic allows the teacher to differentiate for students. Description of the sample Sway activity used with your students: I used Sway to create a lesson about graphic novels. By using Sway, I am able to introduce graphic novels to my students and show the history and importance of this type of novel and text. The lesson also shows a few examples of graphic novels. After the Sway lesson, I will provide a copy of a graphic novel. My students will be expected to read and analyze it and finish the lesson by completing an activity on overall themes and comparing/contrasting other novels with graphic novels. At the end of the unit, I will have students create a small comic strip and have them compare and contrast graphic novels and other novels via the comic strip. I have attached an example of a small comic strip in the ‘other comments’ section below.
