MOTHER’S DAY
REMINDER!
PART OF THE CREW
I know within Prestwick South there are quite a few
members gearing themselves up for a new season of
Formula One. Over the past few months, drivers and
pit crews will have been practising and testing the cars to see how fast
and durable they will be around the numerous racing circuits.

I must confess that, having a son who is a huge F1 fan, I sometimes get
caught up in the excitement of the race. I also have to admit that I’m
continually amazed at the speed at which the pit crew work. For
example, they can change four tyres, clean the driver’s helmet, make
vital adjustments and fuel the car in less than 10 seconds. It happens so
quickly and efficiently because each crew member knows his job and
does it right.

This, naturally, demonstrates the large number of people involved in

trying to ensuring that each car not only starts the race, but finishes.
Imagine, then, if everyone involved in F1 wanted to drive! It would be
chaos.

Likewise in the Church, we have all been equipped with different skills
to do certain tasks. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians reminds us that we are
the body of Christ on this earth and that we have all been given
different tasks. We can’t all be Ministers, Teachers, Elders or Leaders.
Some of us have to change the tyres and fuel the car. But each job is as
important as the other.

As spring approaches, there are plenty of tasks requiring our

involvement such as Christian Aid, Easter Celebrations, the Church
Garden and much more.

May we as the body of Christ fulfil our purpose by playing our past to
the best of our ability.

MOTHER’S DAY
The UK holds the prestige of being the first country in the world to
dedicate a special day for mothers, as early as 17th century. In the UK,
Mother's Day is celebrated on the fourth
Sunday in the month of Lent. Since the
days of Lent are not fixed, the date for
Mother's Day keeps on changing as well.
However, the emotions remain the same.
The feelings associated with the day are
much alike those in the rest of the world
i.e. to express gratitude towards our
mother. It is an opportunity for the
7
children to let their mother know that she is special and loved and cared
for.

Mother's Day is the contemporary version of the original name -

‘Mothering Sunday’. The occasion has a long history, which dates back
to as far back as the year 1600. During that time, the poor used to send
their children to work as domestic servants or trainees in the homes of
higher classes of people. Once a year, these children were given leave
for a day, so that they could visit their Mother Church as well as their
own mother. The day coincided with the middle Sunday of the fasting
period of Lent. It was known as 'Refreshment Sunday' or 'Mid-Lent
Sunday'.

The children would visit their Mother Church and then head straight to
meet their own mother, with some fresh flowers. While the boys would
present their mother with flowers, girls would go a step further by
presenting them freshly baked handmade cakes, which were also called
‘Simnel Cakes’.

With time, the holiday came to be known as 'Mothering Sunday'. The

custom of Mother's Day was halted when the world underwent
Industrial revolution, but steeply bounced back after World War II.
With time, the fourth Sunday of Lent came to be dedicated to mothers
in the UK.

Normally the day is celebrated with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm.

Roses, carnations and chrysanthemums qualify as the most popular
flowers on Mothers Day in Great Britain. Some people also follow the
tradition of making a rich almond cake for their mother on Mother's
Day, which is often called ‘Mothering Cake’ or ‘Simnel Cake’.

In general, people pay tribute to their mother and honour their

contribution in their life. They let their mother know that she is very
special and holds a very important place in their life, which no one can
replace.

Don’t Forget! Sunday 14th March.

KIRK SESSION REPORT

The Kirk Session met in the Session House on Monday 8 February and as is
customary a wide range of topics were discussed as well as reports presented
on the work of Presbytery (given by our Presbytery Elder Mr Bill Elphinstone)
and the work of Prestwick Churches Council (given by our representative Mr
John Park).

Among the items dealt with was a review of the Church Roll which
congregations are required to look at annually. As a result of this a number of
members who have not attended for a few years will be contacted by the
Session Clerk and invited to return to active membership or agree to having
their names added to the Supplementary Roll. For all elders this is a difficult
discussion and decision but it does reflect the need for the Congregational Roll
9
to be an accurate reflection of a community of worshippers (health permitting)
who profess their faith by attending Church on a regular basis.

In his Presbytery Report Mr Elphinstone, as well as highlighting the work of

different committees also advised elders that the Moderator of Ayr Presbytery
Dr David Lewis would preach in our own church and lead worship on Sunday
14 March. Elders trust that there will be a full congregation on that particular
Sunday!

In addition Mr Park advised the Session that the Holy Week Service would be
at St. Ninian’s Church and that the Walk of Witness would be on Good Friday,
2 April and would begin at Kingcase Parish Church and end at the New Life
Church where the walkers would have a bowl of soup.

Other matters discussed at the meeting were the installation of PowerPoint in

the chancel area; that in respect of the redevelopment plan the architects have
now been engaged; that two vacancies exist for elders to join the
Congregational Board following the cyclical retiral of Mr George McLean and
Mrs Anne Wilson and thanks were expressed to them for their work and that
Mr Bobby McPike was admitted to full membership of the congregation by
resolution of the Kirk Session.

The next meeting of the Kirk Session will be on Monday 10 May 2010.

THE PRESBYTERY SAYS ‘THANK YOU’ TO

THE RETIRING CLERK

Fellow Presbyters have taken their leave of the Rev Jim Crichton who,
after almost 20 years service, is now retiring.

Principal tribute was presented by the past Moderator, the Rev John
Paterson, who spoke of the vulnerability of a Presbytery unless one can
have access to someone who is interested and willing to advise and give
direction and encouragement. He said “He is a Presbyterian without a
doubt, a believer in and lover of the Kirk. He has served his Master
with distinction in the ministry of Clerk; a ministry that has required
him to exercise his gifts of faithfulness, integrity, loyalty,
confidentiality, pastoral care, diligence and friendship.”

In response, Mr Crichton took the opportunity of thanking those in the

administrative team; Evelyn Brodie, the secretary for 11 years, and
Monica Clark, who helped in distribution of papers for many years.
Both are now retiring.

NEW CLERK IS A FORMER MODERATOR

The Rev Kenneth Elliott, who succeeds the Rev Jim Crichton as Clerk,
is a former Moderator of the Presbytery, having served in that role in
the 2000-01 session.

Within the Presbytery, Kenneth has served with diligence as convenor

of Benefice and Fabric, during which time he produced a much
appreciated handbook for Property Convenors. He served as Mission
Committee convenor from 1997 to 2000.

In May 2009, he was appointed Associate Clerk.

Kenneth can be heard on a Sunday Night on West Sound airways as a

co-presenter of Sunday at Nine.

14
The new secretary to the Presbytery Clerk, Dorothy McPherson is
settling down to new surroundings in her appointment. She
succeeds Evelyn Brodie, who service in the position for 11 years.

MAUCHLINE MINISTER CALLED TO STRATHAVEN

The Rev Alan Telfer, minister at Mauchline since 1991, has been
called to Strathaven Avondale Old and Drumclog in the
Presbytery of Hamilton.

SPECIAL FUTURE
ANNOUNCEMENT
Moderator’s Visit
We are delighted to have Dr David Lewis, Ayr Presbytery
Moderator, as our guest preacher on Sunday 14th March.

A ruling elder at Alloway Parish Church, Dr David Lewis has been

appointed Moderator of the Presbytery of Ayr for the year 2009-2010.
Within the Presbytery, Dr Lewis has been an active member of several
committees. He served as Convener of the Mission Committee during
the development of the Presbytery Plan and is also a member of the
Mission and Discipleship Council of the Church of Scotland General
Assembly.

SAVE OUR PLANET

God made Heaven and Earth. Then The
Lord God took the man and put him in the
Garden of Eden to work it and take care of
it :
Genesis Ch2 V15.

Recently in Copenhagen peoples of the World have found the need to review
our stewardship of the task given to us with particular emphasis on climate
change and our effects on it. Before the summit took place the General
Assembly of the Church of Scotland decided that all Churches had to consider
the reduction of their carbon footprint by 5%. These are positive steps towards
the care of planet, but it is not down to a global or national decision but to
personal thoughts on how we all care for God’s great gift.

One problem we have is the amount of waste going to landfill. Nobody wants a
landfill site near them but there also is an environmental reason to be
concerned about the rubbish in your green bin that goes to landfill. Organic
waste, such as fruit and vegetable peelings, rots down in landfill to form
methane gas which is a powerful climate change gas. Its effects are twenty
three times more potent than carbon dioxide. Luckily you don’t have to wait
for inter-governmental organisations to solve all climate change issues; you
can play your part and in your own back garden too.

16
Consider having a compost bin in your garden. You can feed it uncooked
vegetable and fruit scraps including potato, carrot and sprout peelings, orange
peel, banana skins, tea bags and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner.

Garden weeds, grass clippings and paper items such as egg boxes, toilet roll
tubes and shredded letters go in too. This will soon turn into rich, healthy
compost you can use all round your garden and no methane gas is produced!

WRAP Scotland in partnership with the Scottish Government offers compost

bins for as little as £8, and this includes delivery, full instructions on how to
compost and a free kitchen caddy. For more details, and to order your bin visit
www.wasteawarescotland.org.uk or ring the order line on 0845 076 0223.

ORGANISATIONAL VISITS
The Guild
by
Neil Hannah and Bill Elphinstone
4th February 2010

Neil Hannah, yes Neil has now recovered and we are a team
again, and I visited the Guild when the subject by the speaker,
Irene Hopkins, was “Street Names”. The beauty about these
Guild visits is that you can choose a date when the subject may
be of interest to both Neil and myself. This time, however, we
were rather limited due to the fact that I was about to go on
holiday, so the choice was mine whether Neil approved or not!!
We were not disappointed; Irene being a retired school teacher
from Galston was quite capable of voice projection without the
aid of a microphone. Her ‘chosen subject’, was really very
interesting, which she presented historically from the very
beginning up to the present day.

The Guild convenor, Joan Gillespie, had a prior engagement and

their treasurer Maureen Miller took on the mantle for the day.
The reading was given by Sheila Muirhead and the vote of thanks
was given by Nancy Paton.
An average number attending is usually in the lower thirties.
Today, however, there were three members who had returned
from a spell of sickness i.e. Mary Danskin, Jean McCormack and
Ina Ross. There were also members from other local churches
who had been given a special invitation.
Normally, the visitors, have to say a few words – Millie Walker
usually keeps things moving but in this instant we, the visitors,
got off scot-free, and neither Maureen nor Millie called on us and
we didn’t volunteer!!, no doubt we will have to make up for it on
our next visit. I was all prepared to follow, in general, with the
theme of Street Names. I was going to associate some of the

18
ladies with an appropriate Street Name, finishing with Maureen
who was to live at “Miller Mansions” in a ‘Street With No
Name’. Yes there really is a street so named in Ayrshire –
perhaps when you are out and about you will pay more attention
to the various street names
There was only one negative point mentioned during the visit and
that was the urn. It had, apparently, been giving the Tea
Committee cause for concern – hopefully the matter will have
been resolved before their next meeting.
The committee members of the Guild are to be complemented for
their choice of speakers, who cover a wide range of subjects
enabling the Guild Members to be entertained weekly on
Thursday afternoons.
The real bonus, as far as Neil and I are concerned, of these visits
is the afternoon teas. A choice of coffee or tea and we really are
spoilt for choice as far as the pancakes, scones and the wide
selection of fancy cakes.
Neil and I would, therefore, like to take this opportunity to say
how appreciative we are of the hospitality that we receive during
these visits and confirm the ‘Good Wishes’ of the session.

THE BIBLE STUDY GROUP

by
Shona McGill and Alex Miller

We paid a visit to the Bible Study Group on Thursday 18th February

2010.

The group meet twice a month and discuss various topics. The topic
being discussed on our visit was “The Whole Armour of God”
Ephesians Chapter 6. We witnessed and took part in a very interesting
discussion.

Although the group is small in numbers, they are very lively and
friendly. They are well organised by their leader, Margaret Bingham.

New members would be most welcome.

GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
|
Matthew’s Gospel is one of four Gospels accounts in the New
Testament of Jesus and his life. Matthew shows not only that Jesus is |
the fulfilment of everything the Jews believed in and expected, but that
his message and teaching is for everyone.
|
Matthew’s Aims
Matthew was probably written at a time when divisions between Jews |
and Christians were hardening, perhaps after the destruction of
Jerusalem in 70CE and when Gentile Christians were distancing |
themselves from Judaism.
|
Matthew addresses both groups: to Jews the writer declares that Jesus
is indeed the Messiah the biblical Prophets had predicted to Jewish and |
Gentile Christians, that God’s Law and promise have been widened to
include all nations. In Matthew, the truth that Jesus is the Messiah is of
|
urgent importance. Matthew emphasises the penalty for those who fail
to live as the kingdom of God demands, using the phrase “weeping and
gnashing of teeth” five times (8:12; 13:42; 22:13; 24:51 25:30), |

Jesus the Jew |

Matthew’s Gospel emphasises the way in which Jesus has not betrayed
the Jewish heritage and Law, but widened and deepened it to become |
God’s Law for all nations: Jesus completed and fulfils Hebrew
Scriptures. The Gospel begins with the words, “An account of the |
genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”
This genealogy of Jesus’ descent from Israel’s king, David, and |
forefather, Abraham, was an important form of legitimation at that
time.
|

20
Matthew’s Message
Matthew’s Gospel is bracketed by two passages (1:23; 23:18-20) that
show us how closely Jesus is related to God – “God is with us”.
| THE BOOK

| TITLE: The Gospel According to Matthew

| DATE: c.85 – 90CE

AUTHORSHIP:
|
Traditionally by Matthew the tax collector (10:3) but many now think that
| the author may have lived in Antioch towards the end of the first century
CE (if the event in Matt. 22:7 refers to the fall of Jerusalem), knew Greek
| well, and received some rabbinic training.

| If Mark’s Gospel came first and was expanded a generation later, the
author could not have been one of the original 12 disciples. Perhaps
| Matthew the tax collector was the source for the material not included in
Mark? Much material in this Gospel has parallels in Luke and may stem
from a lost source.
