A triathlon is a special type of sport competition. The athletes don’t

compete in one sport – they must compete in three different sports!
A triathlete (triathlon + athlete = triathlete) competes in swimming,
cycling and running. To win, the triathlete must be very good at these
three sports.
Vanessa Fernandes is a Portuguese triathlete. She’s got medals from
many world championships and a medal from the Beijing Olympics
in 2008. This is how Vanessa prepares for competitions:
Every morning, Vanessa gets up at 5.15 and swims for two hours.
At 8.30, she has breakfast. After breakfast, she’s got some quiet time,
but at 10.30, she goes cycling for two to three hours. At 1.00 or 1.30,
Vanessa has lunch. She usually has salad and fish. After lunch,
Vanessa can sleep. Then, at 5.00, she goes running. She usually runs
10 to 12 kilometres. At 6.30, she goes to the gym. At 8.00, Vanessa
has dinner, and at 10.00, she goes to bed.
Vanessa hasn’t got much time for a personal life. She must be serious
and hard-working because she wants to win every competition.
