Marker Feedback:

General:
-your essay identifies many relevant differences between these two editions of the Handel, and you
propose a few interesting ideas about why these markings were added; you effectively organise your
discussion around key issues (dynamics, instruments, ornaments, etc.) on the other hand, much
more can still be said to define our expectations for each of these issues, as well as the style and
performance conventions of the 18th and 19th centuries to help contextualise this discussion and
make clear how the editorial markings relate to performance and interpretation

Sources/Bibliography:
-although you include a couple of websites in your bibliography, this is entirely lacking in direct
engagement with ideas and information drawn from sources

Presentation/Formatting:
-generally well presented, with only a few minor typographical inconsistencies (occasionally some
irregular or unclear wording that can be clarified to make sure your meaning is clear to the reader)
How could the work be improved?

General:
-as noted, this could be greatly strengthened by incorporating ideas from sources to help support and
contextualise your own ideas and observations; use quotations and citations to sources as part of the
‘evidence’ in your essay (and respond to them, discuss how/why the ideas are correct or important, or
if you agree/disagree)
-also, this would be greatly enhanced by including visual music examples to support your
ideas/discussion and function as visual ‘evidence’ of your claims (otherwise many of your points
about the features in the edition are not clear to the reader—try to engage with the music more
directly and actively in your writing in future)

Sources/Bibliography:
-as noted, much more engagement needed with ideas and information drawn from secondary
sources is needed in your writing (and all academic essays)

Presentation/Formatting:
-generally fine, though do be sure your writing is always clear (if possible have others read your work
before you submit to help identify any unclear sentences)
