Laua-laua is a gregarious stoloniferous grass. Stems are spreading and
branching below withe the flowering branches 20 to 70 centimeters high.
Leaves are narrow lanceolate, flat and thin, glabrous, 8 to 20 centimeters
long, 5 to 15 millimeters wide. Spikes are two, terminal, slender and 6 to 12
centimeters long. The spikelets are imbricate, 1.2 to 1.4 millimeters long, pale-
green, plano-convex, the empty glumes with long, soft, white marginal hairs.

Mani is an annual, spreading, hairy, branched herb, with stems 30 to 80
centimeters long. Leaves are pinnate, 8 to 12 centimeters long, with a
clasping petiole base and the sheath produced in 2 linear-lanceolate stipules.
Leaflets are in two pairs, oblong to obovate, 2 to 5 centimeters long. Flowers
are axillary, few, fascicled, yellow, about 8 millimeters long. Pods ripen
underground and are oblong, leathery, reticulate, 1 to 5 centimeters long,
containing 1 to 3 seeds that are oval and smooth.

Kaya-kayapuan is an aquatic, herbaceous fern. Rootstock are slender,


creeping, branched, the stipes of the sterile fronds 2 to 12 centimeters high,
slender. Leaves are arranged in two rows on long, the young leaves sightly
downy, on trailing, wiry stems. Leaflets are 4, light to dark green, obovate-
cuneate, glabrous, 10 to 15 centimeters long or smaller in terrestrial forms,
rounded and slightly crenate or subentire at the apex , the lateral margin
entire, straight, cuneately narrowed to the sessile base. Sporocarps (spore
bearing organ found near the rootstock) are covered with brown hairs when
young, becoming glabrous and nearly so, oblong, about 3 millimeters long,
rounded, slightly compressed, somewhat clustered or solitary, their pedicels 5
millimeters long or less, the upper basal tooth prominent

Lilyturf is an evergreen perennial stemless plant growing to a height of 0.3
meters. Tubers are pale yellowish-greenish, cylindrical and fleshy, translucent
and flexible, 2.5 to 5 centimeters long, 0.3 to 0.6 centimeter in diameter,
tapering at either extremity. Leaves are tufted, numerous, ensiform, 45 to 70
centimeters long, and 0.3 to 0.8 centimeters wide. Inflorescence is solitary, 20
to 33 centimeters long. Flowers are small and odorless, white or purplish.
Convallaria japonica Thunb. Mondo grass (Engl.)

Mondo grass is a low, stemless, glabrous, grasslike, perennial herb with large
stolons with tuberous roots. Leaves are leathery, narrow-linear, 20 to 30
centimeters long, gracefully arching and dark green. Flowers are small,
drooping, violet-purple to lilac or white, borne on erect racemes up to 8
centimeters long. Fruit is a blue berry, 5 millimeters in diameter.

Bunga-bunga is a spreading or prostrate, erect, more or less branched,
glabrous, succulent herb, 0.4 to 1.4 meters high. The ultimate branches are
covered with two lines of hairs on the internodes, and the flowering ones are
ascending. Leaves are stalkless, simple or pinnately compound, the leaflets
elliptic, crenate or obscurely toothed, usually about 2.5 to 7 centimeters long,
thick and succulent. Flowers are minute, 5 to 7 millimeters long, paniculate,
pendulous, white, and crowded in very short, axillary heads. Sepals are
lanceolate, 2 to 2.5 millimeters long. Fruit is dry and flattened, broadly
obcordate utricle, containing one seed.
Cuphea hyssopifolia Kunth Kupea (Tag.)

Kupea is a small evergreen much-branched subshrub growing to 1.5 meters.


Stems are semi-woody, slender and crooked. Leaves are green, opposite,
stalkless and numerous on the branches, narrow-lanceolate, up to 1.5
centimeters long. Flowers are small, purplish violet to light purple with green
calyx.

Zebrina pendula is a vigorous branching creeper with succulent leaves and


stems, rooting freely at the nodes. Leaves are sessile and alternate, ovate
and short acuminate, the upper surface dark green to purple, with 2
longitudinal silver stripes adaxially. The under-surface is dark purple. Flowers
are spurple-pink, small and in terminal clusters.
Adicea microphylla Kuntze Alabong (Ig.)

Alabong is a small,soft, smooth herb, 10 centimeters or less in height. Stems


are slender, angular, green with a tint of purple, and angular. Leaves occur in
two rows, petioled, somewhat elliptical in shape, 2 to 5 millimeters in length.
Flowers are very small and crowded in small inflorescences (cymes) which
are greenish or tinged with red and less than 1 millimeter in length.

Biri is an erect, branched, annual herb which reaches a height of 15 to 60 centimeters. Leaves
are opposite, smooth or nearly so, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, and 1.5 to 3 centimeters long, with
pointed tip and wedge-shaped base, and with toothed or wavy margins. Conical heads occur
singly at the ends of long stalks, and are about 1 centimeter in length. Flowers are yellow.
Achenes are flattened, oblong, dark-brown and enclosed separately in scales.
Mimosa pudica Linn. Damohia (Tag.)

Makahiya is a diffusely spreading, half-woody herb, with branched stems up to


1 meter long, sparingly prickly with numerous deflexed, bristly hairs. The
leaves are very sensitive, both pinnae and leaflets, folding when touched.
Pinnae are usually 4, digitately arranged at the end of each petiole, and 4 to 9
centimeters long. The leaflets are narrowly oblong, inequilateral, 1 to 1.5
centimeters long, sessile, sparingly bristly, with pointed tips. Heads are long-
peduncled, solitary or 2 to 3 in each axil, about 1 centimeter in diameter. Pods
are flat, slightly recurved, 1 to 2 centimeters long, with 3 to 5 one-sided joints
that fall away on maturity. Florets are red in the upper part with pink to
lavender filaments.
Ephemerum bicolor Moench Bangka-bangkaan (Tag.)
Bangka-bangkaan is a stout perennial herbaceous, somewhat fleshy plant, 0.5 meters in height
or less, the stem thick and unbranched. Leaves are lanceolate, acuminate, 40 to 60 centimeters
long, 4 to 6 centimeters wide, fleshy, the upper surface dark green, the lower purple. Flowers
are numerous in each inflorescence, fascicled, white, about 1 centimeter in diameter.
Inflorescence, axillary, short, peduncled, the flowers surrounded by 2 large, imbricate, laterally
compressed, distichous, 3 to 4 centimeters long purplish bracts.
