INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

I have successfully completed the industrial training at Sunway Construction SDN.BHD.

The project is based at 172, Persiaran Sultan Sallahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Presint 1,
62000 Putrajaya, Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya.I have been assigned for Package 3
Mechanical, Electric and Plumbing Services (MEP) department. I started my industrial
training as stated in the offer letter which was on 2nd October 2017 and completed my
industrial training on 29th December 2017.

Sunway Construction SDN BHD- As a leader in turnkey building and

infrastructure projects, Sunway Construction’s world-class expertise is in building, civil
engineering, geotechnical solutions, M&E solutions, industrial building systems,
machinery and logistics. With a range of multi-disciplinary experience, Sunway
Construction is able to tailor fully-integrated and cost-effective solutions for its clients,
delivering effective design-and-build services. Sunway Construction’s strength lies in its
ability to plan and construct virtually any project, successfully taking them from
conception to completion. As a leader in turnkey building and infrastructure projects,

1.2 Objectives

The objectives of the industrial training program are:

i. To train students in construction field and learn the depth of MEP services in
buildings.
ii. To widen their knowledge and skill and apply in the construction field.

The significance of Industrial Training is the understudies have chance to get

involvement in genuine working circumstances and can make sense of their capacity and
ability as a genuine specialist.

Industrial Training also understudies were getting leeway for their selves where all
the information that they have learnt can be rehearses at their work put in the wake of
landing their own particular position for what's to come.

1.3 Job Scope

I. Compile documents & drawings for Electrical and Mechanical services tender
II. Daily Report Progression
III. Monitor on excavation work for cable tracing
IV. Assist to carry out site inspection together with the engineers
V. Submit RFWI to in house and checker acknowledge and photocopy for COW

1.4 Organization Chart

The simplified organizational structure of Sunway Construction is shown in Figure 2.

Exact information about the number and job descriptions of the company employees
cannot be provided because of the confidentiality policy of such a sensitive institution
and because of the very large number of employees but we can say that there are many
technicians and engineers with variant degrees and these form the majority of
employees.

DEPARTMENT/PROCESS FLOW

2.1 Department

Our department is Package 3 which involves four blocks, F5, F6, F7, and F11. The
whole constructions consist of 11 blocks. Therefore our department controls mechanical,
electrical and plumbing services. Our packages consist of 4 engineers and 4 supervisors.
Our client is Putrajaya Bina and Sunway is the main contractor. Under Sunway there are
main Sub-Cons for each facility.

2.3.1. Toolbox is where all the workers and labours will gather and update about the progression
and safety briefing.

2.3.2. Safety in Construction Site during ITP

Construction work is a hazardous land-based job. Some construction site jobs include: building
houses, roads, tree forts, workplaces and repair and maintain infrastructures. This work includes
many hazardous task and conditions such as working with height, excavation, noise, dust, power
tools and equipment. Safety is very important in Sunway Construction site and very strict also.
The following figures shows the safety attire used in the construction site.

14
Normally all engineers and supervisors required to use safety helmet and other labours is
compulsory

Figure belows shows Sunway’s safety vest and safety helmet and have to me wear all the time in
the constrction site.

CHAPTER 3

SUMMARY OF INTERNSHIP

The Industrial Training program took 3 months to accomplish. In fact, my training in Sunway
Constructions was very useful to me in acquiring new engineering skills that I had not had
before. These learned skills prove being very valuable by signifying an impact in solving
problems. It is well known that engineering skills have vital importance in troubleshooting
specifically. Some of the areas, problems and difficulties in which the engineering skills I
learned signified an impact in solving problems are the following. Flowchart shows the summary
of my whole internship program.

3.1 Problem faced

When a problem arises where designing a technical project is required, the improved technical
skills in using specialized software for simulation, programming, plotting, instrumentation, etc,
and in dealing with hardware become very useful and helpful in increasing design efficiency.
Such a project could be an academic project or an industrial project, such as Sunway
Construction projects. Design engineers in Sunway Construction use these skills extensively
when working on any project. Example of problem faced is the connection of ducting and fire
water pump pipe will be intercept and we had to adjust the measurement between the pipe and
the ceiling. Figure below show the picture of wrong trucking.

Figure 3.1 above shows a sample of memo to subcon to which area is defected.

We as a Sunway Con have to push the Sub-Con to be notified and solve it as soon as possible.
Then it will undergoes inspection again.

21
3.2 Work Progression

Figure 3.2 above shows the sample of progression report during site visit.

Skills of teamwork and planning are universally desired since they increase the efficiency
of any project in terms of time and money. The next chapter lists skills that I have acquired or
improved during my training. With no doubt, each of these skills has its usefulness that using it
can help in solving of an arising problem

Chapter 4

Conclusion

In conclusion, I am well satisfied with my training. I have learned many new technical subjects,
acquired a number of new technical skills and improved another group of existing skills, other
than those gained at university syllabus. What I liked most about my training is that it is very
strongly related to academic materials and knowledge we studied in the university. This refutes
the common saying that very little of the materials taught in university engineering courses is
used by engineers working in the labour market. This dependency (relationship) is clearest in
engineering design and development, which is the nature of work in Sunway Constructions.
However, this does not mean that I have learned little new things in my training. I may count the
technical skills that I learned or improved at the training at the construction site. I also learned
increasing my understanding of how a successful design process should flow in a step by-step
sequence with troubleshooting arising problems and reading more at each step. This was gained
by both practicing and monitoring work at the site. Moreover, I also increased my ability to work
as a member in a team. Actually this had been a problem of mine; I did not believe much in
teamwork. Now, after the training, I can say that my belief in the benefits of teamwork, when the
team is concerted, has increased a lot.

23
4.1 Recommendation

In this chapter, I give my opinion about training in Sunway Construction and in general. Since
previous speech focused on advantages of training at Sunway Construction. I will focus here on
the disadvantages and provide recommendations concerning them

I recommend that at the beginning of the training period the training supervisor determines with
the trainee which of the current main projects in the section, or department, to involve him / her
in according to his / her tendencies. This should not be a time-distributed schedule but only a
listing of projects in which he/she will be submitted partial tasks. Otherwise, the trainee would
find himself disorganized or having nothing to do for a long time. I think that partial tasks that
are achievable the short period of training are best fit to trainees. A trainee should not be
submitted a complete project or asked to start a new project. I think SunCon should be more
reveal the trainee to involve on the technical site. It is because the SunCon management maintain
the quality of their work and not ready to give the trainee to expose. They worried that there will
be mistake. Furthermore, Another problem was the negative effect of the large load of work on
the design engineers which caused them to ignore trainees totally for many days. I think if they
involve trainees well from the beginning to carry a partial loads of the projects, this would be
helpful. Last but not least, However, the valuable benefits I gained from training at Sunway
Construction Sdn Bhd lets my overall evaluation of training there be: very good. Finally,
regarding the training program at university in general, I think there should be more equity
between students. The net training periods should be equal or close. I think that if training days
are three or two a week, training will not achieve its goals. However, a general recommendation
to training institutions is to try to get maximum benefit from trainees instead of ignoring them.
Energy of the employees should be best invested since this will achieve common interests of the
trainee (practical expertise) and the company.
