Can you believe that, 1/6" of the year gone! Amongst the dull, cold grey days we have had some real crackers with blue skies and sunshine. Of course, for us gardeners this is quite an exciting time. Dusting down the seed tray and checking through; finding the propagator and stocking up on seeds and seed compost. All those tantalising, gloriously colourful seed packets winking at us, promising us pots and gardens full of exotic colour and perfume. Alas the fickleness of the germination and actual flourishing of said seeds can tell a very different tale, for truth to tell, gardening is truly the most masochistic hobby, but we always believe that this year everything will be just fine........ After all, we're all gardeners, sewing seeds of love, kindness, hope, gratitude and charity. May they all thrive. Gina Next issue to be collected March 23rd.. Order your repeat prescriptions If you have previously had a prescription for hay fever treatments, you do not need to make an appointment to obtain further supplies. Written repeat prescription requests should be sent to the dispensary. Prescription costs Over-the-counter nasal sprays usually cost about the same as a prescription charge. A month’s supply of antihistamine tablets usually costs substantially more when bought over-the- counter than they cost on prescription. Start treatment for hay fever early All treatments work better if started before the onset of the hay fever season — late March or early April is a sensible time to start. TO ALL PARISHIONERS Let's think for a moment about plastic — a superb modern material, all around us in our daily lives, Everything seems to be made from plastic - which used to be thought a Very Good Thing, a huge improvement on previous materials. | feel compelled to get up on my soapbox this month, something | do try to resist. Have you seen recent news reports about the catastrophic damage plastic waste is doing to our planet? The pristine Antarctic wilderness, the last unspoilt comer of our world, is pristine no longer. Our discarded plastic such as bottles, rope and plastic micro beads from cosmetics, often pulverised into minute fragments by the sea, is infiltrating our ecosystems, devastating the landscape and killing wildlife throughout the food chain right up to polar bears and large aquatic mammals. What can we do to improve this dire situation? We may think very little - other countries especially in the developing world, are far more culpable. But we all have a duty of care. We all want to be wise and responsible stewards of our world for future generations. Norway has a well-developed plastic bottle recycling system which works well, incentivising people to collect empty bottles and reuse them responsibly. We coulld learn from them. Which brings me to tea bags. Try buying loose tea these days. It's difficult. 95% of the tea we buy is in tea bags; in the UK we drink 165 million cups per day, 62 billion per year. Tea bags used to be made of paper but nowadays are frequently made of plastic and nylon fragments and polyethylene to make them stronger. These items may take 2000 years to biodegrade - if at all. 165 million cups of tea every day. If we all went back to using loose tea that would make a positive difference. Small changes, big effects. Sorry about the soapbox — but some issues are impossible to ignore. God's Kingdom of justice and peace is always close at hand. This year, on April 1", Christians throughout the world will celebrate God's saving power through the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ and we will draw close to God. The theological term for this is ‘reconciliation.’ We need to be reconciled too to our planet and to its delicate ecology... for ourselves and for future generations. The alternative - the gradual destruction of our planet — is unthinkable. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your Kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Marion Scales read aloud the Alberta Creed and then Penny introduced our speakers for the evening: Kenny Dewing and Stephen Thrower from the Gayton History Group. Kenny brought along a vast array of photographs and records of village happenings the history group have collected over the last few years. He reminded us of village life when he told us of the many farms such as Church Farm and Woods Farm which would have employed quite a number of village folk who at the end of a long working day would have retired to one of the seven pubs or off licences for a little liquid refreshment! It seems postcards were popular around the early 1900s and there were many showing properties and street scenes of Gayton. Interestingly in Winch Road, just outside the Royal Oak pub, a dog can be seen wandering along in the middle of the road — not something you would see today. There were diaries from the village school detailing the children who had attended and when they left the school to move on to pastures new. Many at the meeting remembering teacher, Dolly Green, who taught the infants for 23 years and who lived at what had been a farmhouse at the top of Orchard Road. After Kenny's presentation everyone enjoyed tea or coffee whilst looking through the files with Kenny and Stephen on hand to provide extra bits of information Penny gave a vote of thanks before drawing the raffle. The winners were: Sarah Renwick, Pat Gadsby, Sandra Harvey, Kenny Dewing, Charles Muff and Christine Williamson. She then thanked everyone for coming to our meeting and wished them a safe journey home on what turned out to be a cold and snowy night. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 6" March and if you would like to join our happy group, please just come along to the Jubilee Hall for 7.30pm. Sandra Brock Thank you to Peter and Chris Howard for the years they have supplied the village and other people with kindling and blocks. Wishing you both a long and happy retirement. The data received so far, highlights an urgent need for the young (ages 10 to 30) of our growing village to put their opinion forward and speak up, on what matters to them. This does not mean we no longer want to hear from other age groups but, simply put, we have little data from these groups. The NP Banners are a ‘calll to act’ as the perceived development through planning applications will affect us all. What we like or dislike about our village is important. Not all change is bad but how we live, play and socialise in our Parishes needs the community to work with the Steering Group. Then we can put forward a workable and strategic plan, fit for us and our children, now and in the future Taking the above into account, it was decided to extend the deadline for Survey completion from 14” to 28” February. So, once again we encourage you all to ‘have your say’ as ‘your thoughts matter’ and it is important you feel able to ‘add your voice’. Find out more, using the web page advertised. Contact details: Gayton NP, The Willows, Back Street, Gayton, KL, PE32 1QR or email: GaytonNP@gmail.com January update The Steering Group encourages participation of all residents of Gayton and Gayton Thorpe in the consultation process. This will be with a day of workshops held in the Jubilee Hall, Gayton and Gayton Thorpe, March-April 2018. The Steering Group will be running own workshop early March so that it is fully prepared for the Village open day workshops We expect the workshops will be fun and informative and will only take up a few hours of your time, one Saturday or Sunday. Refreshments will be provided. If you have experience of running workshops or would like to assist, please get in touch with us using the contact details below. If you would like to attend a workshop or justneed some more information, please let us know in the same way. Look out for posters around the village advertising the dates. This is a project for the village by the village and we want people of every age tohave their say, so please encourage the youngsters in your house to respond on line and take up this opportunity. We hope to share positive news in the April issue and moving forward, welcome everyone who has an interest to participate whenever you can. Kindly note that we had 5 Trustees during 2016 and 2017 and at our AGM in April 2018, will be left with 2. Not all volunteers are required to be Trustees but it helps to keep the daily affairs of running a small charity, equable and transparent to all. Jubilee Hall Thank you to all the users of the hall for their appreciation of newly painted and fresh surroundings. March 11th Ausually dedicated son was driving home one Saturday evening when suddenly, to his horror, he remembered it was Mothers’ Day the next day and he hadn't ordered any flowers. He immediately headed back into town to the florist just as they were closing and asked for a bouquet of Spring flowers: daffodils, irises, anemones and tulips. The florist sadly told him that she didn’t have a single flower left. Seeing the bloke’s forlorn face, she quickly offered to make up a green bouquet with some different types of fern. This he accepted and drove off to see his mother. Sheepishly, he proffered the green bouquet, explaining that he had meant to get a nice spring flower arrangement. His doting mum, noting his discomfort, said reassuringly, ‘Don’t worry son. With fronds like these, who needs anemones?!’ Smashed Pea Bruschetta This is a quick, nutritious, light meal or snack for 4 or 6 and very tasty. You will need: Olive oil; a medium onion, finely chopped; 3 garlic cloves, grated; 2 tsp of finely chopped Rosemary leaves; 400g frozen garden peas; 2 small preserved lemons, finely chopped and pips removed OR 1 fresh lemon zested and juiced; 3 tbsp of soft cheese; 1 tbsp Parmesan or similar cheese; 8 or 12 slices of Ciabatta or sourdough bread. (If you're serving this as a light supper, use the lessor slices of bread and pile on the mixture thicker). Optional: slices of streaky bacon cooked to go on the top of the pea mixture On a low heat, saute the onion and garlic in a little oil for 5 minutes and then add the Rosemary for a further 5 minutes. Meanwhile blanch the peas for 2 mins in boiling water and then drain. Put the onion mix, lemons (or zest and juice) and 2/3rds of the peas in a blender and pulse to a coarse paste. Add the cheeses, salt and pepper to taste, and pulse again. Stir in the remaining peas. » Brush your chosen bread with oil on both sides and grill. Spoon over the pea mixture. Drizzle over a little Olive oil and add lemon twist or the bacon. Enjoy. 23 SERVICES FOR MARCH 2018 Friday 2" 2pm Pott Row Methodst Chapel 4n 3 Sunday in Lent 8.30am St Mary East Walton 9.30am St Lawrence Harpley Women’s World Day of Prayer Holy Communion Family Service 10.30am _—_ St Botolph Grimston Holy Communion 10.30am _—_ St Nicholas Gayton Morning Praise 11.00am St Mary Gt Massingham Holy Communion 6pm St Andrew Congham Evensong 7th 9am St Lawrence Harpley Holy Communion 44 Fourth Sunday in Lent (Mothering Sunday) 10.30am St Botolph Grimston Group Holy Communion 4pm Pott Row Chapel The Gap 18 Fifth Sunday in Lent 8.30am _Alll Saints Roydon 9.30am St Andrew Lt Massingham 10.30am — St Nicholas Gayton 10.30am _ St Botolph, Grimston 11.00am St Mary Gt Massingham 41.15am St Lawrence Harpley Wednesday 21% 9am St Botolph Grimston 25th Palm Sunday 8.30am St Andrew Congham 10.30am _— St Nicholas Gayton 41am St Mary Gt Massingham 3pm St Mary East Walton 29th Maundy Thursday 5.00pm St Mary Gt Massingham 7.00pm St Nicholas Gayton 30th Good Friday 10.00am St Botolph Grimston 11.00am St Mary Gt Massingham 31st 3pm St Mary Gayton Thorpe 24 Holy Communion Holy Communion Holy Communion Morning Praise Family Service Sung Holy Communion Holy Communion Holy Communion Family Service Holy Communion Donkey service Holy Communion Passover Supper Meditation service with the cross Liturgy of the cross Family service & Easter Egg Hunt APRIL 1st Easter Day 6.00am All Saints Ashwicken Dawn Service 9.30am St Lawrence Harpley Family Holy Communion 10.30am _—_ St Botolph Grimston Holy Communion 10.30am —- St Nicholas Gayton Holy Communion 41.00am St Mary Gt Massingham Holy Communion Easter Lilies for Ashwicken Church \ \\ fr If you would like to give money towards the purchase of lilies for Ashwicken Church at Easter, please either send or give it to Mrs Joy s Smith 16 Gayton Road, Grimston PE32 1BG. Members brought along various tasty morsels, and any New Year resolutions for healthy eating were forgotten. Before we tucked in, we dealt with business matters. Our president, Myrtle, welcomed a prospective member, Christine, and we all joined in with singing ‘Jerusalem’ and then got down to business: WI members brought their Resolution voting slips to the meeting. Positive Body Image, Stop Female Genital Mutilation, Raising Awareness of Modern Slavery in the UK, Mental Health Matters and Healthier Mouth, Healthier Body are the campaigns put forward this year. The winning campaign(s) will be presented at the National Campaign which is being held in Cardiff on 6” June 2018. Some members will also be attending The Federation Annual Meeting in March and can look forward to a presentation by Gemma Johnson of the Café Britannia. Café Britannia started life at the former Britannia Barracks next to HMP Norwich, helping low risk offenders improve their lives. Now there are Café Britannia throughout Norfolk. Tim Bentinck, known to millions of Archer fans as David Archer, will be also talking of ‘Being David Archer and other Unusual Ways of earning a Living’. Members also have the opportunity to an ‘Auditions Day’ at Watlington Village Hall in March. We will listen to would-be Speakers/Demonstrators talking and presenting their chosen subject. Those selected will then be entered into our WI Yearbook along with others Speakers and Demonstrators. Ws invite a selection of Speakers/Demonstrators to their meetings during the year. Following all business matters, we continued with our party. Happy Birthday wishes and a gift were given to Myrtle, Heather, Jan and Wendy. Double congratulations were warranted by Wendy who has been part of the bell-ringing team at the Minster since 1953. The competition for an item beginning with ‘A’ was won by Ann, with Wendy 2” and Ali 3”. Healthy living resolutions were put on further hold when 13 members enjoyed afternoon tea at Dobbies recently. Will it be a dry spell for members in March? (In more ways than one!) This month we will be entertained by Maureen Rispin who will give us a talk on how Mrs Alfred Watt helped Queen Mary start a WI at Sandringham in 1919. Mrs Rispin will be wearing period costume so we hope that she does not break down en route! We meet every 3” Tuesday at Leziate Village Hall from 2pm — 4pm and always welcome guests or new members. The organisers of Battle’s Over, a national and international event marking the Armistice, wants to see more than 1,000 churches and cathedrals participate by ringing their bells simultaneously at 7.05pm on the night of November 11° 2018. Pageantmaster Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR is encouraging bell ringers to take part in Ringing Out for Peace. “I have no doubt that dedicated campanologists in Britain and around the world will want to join in this once-in-a-lifetime tribute to everyone who served on the battlefields, the high seas and the home front.” Ringing Out for Peace is part of Battle’s Over, a unique day-long commemoration of the end of the first world war taking place throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and at scores of locations overseas, including Australia, Canada, Denmark, Somaliland, the United States and Germany. It begins at 6am on November 11" 2018 with lone pipers playing Battle's O'er, a traditional tune played after a battle, outside every cathedral in the country. At the same time, pipers everywhere will be playing the same tune in their local communities around the world. The tribute is being organised with the assistance of the Glasgow-based College of Piping, local pipe bands around the world, the Air Training Corps and the Army Cadet Force. At 6.55pm buglers will sound the Last Post at more than 1,000 locations, where at 7pm WW1 Beacons of Light will be lit, signifying the light of peace that emerged from the darkness of war. Then at 7.05pm church and cathedral bells will be Ringing Out for Peace, organised with the assistance of the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers, the representative body for groups who ring bells in the English tradition with rope and wheel. It was founded in 1891 and represents 65 affiliated societies of local ringers from all over the British Isles and in Australia, Canada, the USA, South Africa and Italy. “| hope as many people as possible will join us in the Battle's Over events to mark the conclusion of the first world war and pay tribute to the loved ones who played their part.” Churches can register their involvement by completing the Ringing out for Peace entry form found at — www.brunopeek.co.uk More information on Battle's Over — A Nation's Tribute 11" November 2018, and how to take part, can be found at www.brunopeek.co.uk For further information or interviews please contact Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR, Pageantmaster on 44 (0)7737 262913 or brunopeek@mac.com 33 GEOFFREY GRIEF eae rho Your LOCAL, Painter & Decorator covering all the villages Interior and Exterior Painting & Decorating Telephone: 01553 810668 A Norfolk County Council TRUSTED TRADER EAST WINCH VILLAGE HALL Station Road, East Winch Post Code PE32 1NR East Winch Village Hall is available for hire. Have you given anything up for Lent, the season of denial? Is it coffee, booze, chocolate, cheese? Does it have to be consumables? Could it be a bad habit we have formed? Lent isn’t just about denial, but contemplation as well. It is so easy in these times, with info coming at us from all directions, to believe all the hype of the news rooms, the latest health scare, the scary world news, that often we can’t do anything about, the negativity of a world gone completely bonkers. News programmes have to be filled whether there is ‘news’ or not. Can we, if only for 6 weeks, reject the outside influences and believe in ourselves, our own instincts, our own ability to make decisions and really have an impact on those around us by spreading out smiles, a kindly word, and just being kind to ourselves. Might be worth a try.
