Crop growth modelling - use of IT in agronomic research

Crop growth modelling, defined here as the dynamic simulation of crop growth by numerical integration of
constituent processes with the aid of computer, is a technology
used to construct a relatively transparent surrogate (substitute) for a real crop, one that can be analysed
and manipulated with far greater ease than the complex and
cumbersome original..

Drip Irrigation Need of the Time

Drip irrigation is the most efficient method of irrigating. While sprinkler systems are around 75-85%
efficient, drip systems typically are 90% or higher. What that means is much less wasted water! For this
reason drip is the preferred method of irrigation in the desert regions of the United States.

Development of Computer Software “BSAT”

Saif–ul-Qahhar & Riaz Ahmed Wahed and Fozia Marjan

A computer soft ware “Bio-Saline Agriculture Technology (BSAT)” has been developed and being
released on 30 years celebration of NIAB. As a rub in arid and semi-arid land the evaporation exceeds
rainfall.

The Master of Bio-Magnetism

Prof. Dr. Aurangzeb Hafi

The world is progressing fast. The introduction of new technologies and ideas is the essence of getting
synergy in the universal development process. This is particularly true for developing nations who have
lagged behind in the latest technology process.

Bio-magnetism is a branch of science that deals with the effect of magnetic field on living and non-living
things.

Silage! A Vital Solution of Fodder Scarcity in the Country

The critical constraint for profitable livestock production in developing countries is the inadequacy of
quality forage. Because of ever growing human need for food, only limited cultivated land can be
allocated to fodder production.

Improving irrigation technology

Irrigated agriculture has driven much of the increase in global food production over recent decades. While
only 20% of the world's farmland is irrigated, it produces 40% of our food supply. The highest yields
obtained from irrigation are more than double the highest yields from rainfed agriculture - even low-input
irrigation is more productive than high-input rainfed farming.

Pitcher irrigation: a water saving technique

Altaf Ali Siyal

Buried clay pot irrigation (pitcher irrigation) has been used to grow a wide range of annual and perennial
plants in China, Pakistan, India, Iran, Mexico, and Brazil. In fact, it is even recorded in Chinese texts
dating back more than 2000 years.

ZT technology working wonders

Zafar Samdani

A revolution seems to be in the making in the agriculture sector, specifically in areas where wheat crop is
alternated with rice. This is the fruit of zero tillage technology that has raised wheat yield by about 15 to
20 maunds per acre. When the technology is fully adopted in the wheat-rice belt covering about 13 million
acres, the result should be an unimaginable wheat surplus.

New wheat variety developed

Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute, Faisalabad has developed a new wheat variety "Ufaq-
2002" through tissue culture.
Artificial breeding of 'Mahaseer'
Punjab Fisheries Department has achieved a major break through after successful experiment of artificial
breeding of an endangered fish species of South Asian countries 'Mahaseer'.

PAEC to produce disease-free banana plants

Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) is fully alive to face the challenge of disease threat to
banana crop and tissue culture technique is being used to produce disease-free banana plants in
Pakistan.

Parachute technology for rice being introduced in Punjab

Parachute technology of rice is being introduced for putting the agriculture sector on modern lines to bring
revolutionary improvement in per acre yield.

Pakistani scientist develops Sectorial Magnetic Model

A Pakistani scientist Dr Aurangzeb Hafi has earned a great honour for the country by developing
'Magneto-Agricultural Development Model and Sectorial Magnetic Model' for the first time in the world that
will vivid far-looking and long lasting effects on agriculture, environmental and medical sciences, space
biology, magnetobotanics, magnetohydrodynamics and multidisciplinary sciences.

Technology developed to get energy from agricultural residues

A recent survey indicates that thousands of tonnes of agricultural residues on cultivated land in the
country go up in flame after every harvesting season because there seems to no use for it.

Researchers identify group of micro-organisms

Researchers in the US and Pakistan have identified a group of micro-organisms that can breakdown a
common toxic pesticide, endosulfan.

Farmers asked to apply modern irrigation methods

In order to confront existing water shortage, farmers should carefully apply efficient and modern methods
of irrigation to achieve maximum advantages from minimum amount of water.

Farm Technology Changing Agriculture

Lucas Shivers

Hi-tech systems offer tractors that operate without drivers No one is denying that technology is changing
the face of the world. Tomorrow's technology will bring sweeping changes to every industry, including
agriculture, and may one day make it possible to conduct business and control production without a great
deal of human labor.

Scientists urged to educate farmers about 'Zero Tillage'

Scientists can play an important role in socio-economic uplift of the country utilising their capabilities in
various fields particularly in agriculture sector.

Use of water conservation technology

Zafar Samadani

It is bewildering how a country facing severe shortage of water should be looking for higher productivity
by extending cultivated area instead of applying conservation methods and technologies increasingly in
use across the world; even water affluent countries are harnessing them to boost productivity.

Zero-Tillage Curriculum Development Workshop

Various resource conservation technologies have been adopted in the recent past to improve the
productivity of rice-wheat system. Of these, adoption of zero-tillage for timely planting of wheat after rice
harvest was popularized among the farming community. However, new challenges are emerging in the
adoption of this technology on large scale.

New technology can regenerate plants in large number

The plants regeneration by cell and tissue culture technique can complement conventional breeding
procedure and plants can be regenerated in a large number. However, the success of this breeding
technology depends upon the efficiency of the cultured cells with desired characteristics.

Techniques of brackish water utilization for agriculture

In view of the scarcity of canal water and scanty rainfalls, the importance of brackish water has increased
manifold. This is the only alternative to meet the severe shortfalls of irrigation water occurring in the
recent years. The quality of groundwater does not permit its blind use and it is direly needed that brackish
water is managed scientifically for using in crop production. Following are the techniques developed
through greenhouse and field studies for sofe usage of such water
