COMPARATIVE FORMS: We use the comparative forms to compare two nouns

(animals, people, cities, counties, situations, days, ideas, objects, etc)

Formation of the Comparative Forms

1. One-syllable adjectives get –er.
Cheaper taller younger faster older nicer slower
2. Adjectives that finish with letter “y” get –ier.
Happy-happier easy-easier funny-funnier lucky-luckier
3. One-syllable adjectives that finish in “consonant + vowel + consonant” double the last consonant
ant get –er.
Hot – hotter big – bigger slim – slimmer
4. Adjectives with two adjectives or more get more + adjective.
More beautiful more expensive more dangerous more interesting

5. Irregular Adjectives:
 Good/well better
 Bad/badly worse
 A little/a few less
 Far farther/further
 Much/many more
Examples:
1. Iquitos has a hotter weather than “La Merced”.
2. Is your father younger than your mother? We usually use
3. Physics isn’t easier than mathematics for me. THAN.
4. A rabbit is more beautiful than a lizard.
5. Is a national university better than a private one?
SUPELATIVE FORMS: We use the superlative forms to compare one noun (an animal, a
person, a city, a county, a situation, a day, an idea, an object, etc) in a similar group.

Formation of the Superlative Forms

1. One-syllable adjectives get –est.
The Cheapest the tallest the youngest the fastest the oldest

2. Adjectives that finish with letter “y” get –iest.

Happy- the happiest easy-the easiest funny-the funniest

3. One-syllable adjectives that finish in “consonant + vowel + consonant” double the last
