LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Teacher Candidate: Lea Huck Date: _______________________

Cooperating Teacher: Mrs. Dillow/Mr. Spleen Coop. Initials: ________________
Group Size: Approx. Fifty Allotted Time: Forty-Five Minutes Grade Level: 1st/4th Grade
Subject or Topic: Social Studies- Careers: Book Buddy Activity Section: 045

Standard (PA Common Core):

 15.2.2.B. Identify occupations of familiar adults.
 15.2.2.Q. Ask and answer questions related to interests and careers.

I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):

 The first grade students will be able to list facts about the career they choose by exploring a
website and answering questions with their book buddies.

II. Instructional Materials:

 “What Kids Want To Be When They Grow Up” YouTube video
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x8nInLPWkU)
 iPads (1 per book buddy pair)
 PebbleGo, “Jobs in the Community” (https://www.pebblego.com/modules/5/categories/5007)
 Jobs in the Community worksheet (1 per book buddy pair)
 Pencils (1 per book buddy pair)

III. Subject Matter/Content:

 Prerequisite Skills: The first grade students will need to know what a career is.
 Key Vocabulary:
 Big Idea: There are many different careers that students can be when they grow up. All jobs are
equally important, because a community does not run smoothly because of one single person’s
job.
 New Content: There are many jobs that students can have when they grow up. These jobs
include child care workers, construction workers, teachers, veterinarians, dentists, doctors,
farmers, firefighters, garbage collectors, librarians, nurses, and police officers. The students will
learn what exactly the people who have these jobs do, what they wear, where they work, and
the tools they use on the job.

IV. Implementation
A. Introduction:
1. When the fourth grade book buddies arrive, have them find their partner and sit next to
them.
2. Tell the students, “The first graders have been learning all about some of the different
jobs or careers that there are in the community around us. Before I tell you what we are
going to do today, I want to show you a quick video about what happens when you ask
some children what they want to be when they grow up. Some of the answers they give
are pretty silly, but a lot of them are awesome ideas about what we can be when we
grow up.”
3. Play the video, “What Kids Want To Be When They Grow Up” on YouTube. After the
video, say to the students, “I heard two new careers that we haven’t talked about in first
grade. One of them was a meteorologist. Does anyone know what a meteorologist
does?” Wait for student volunteers, then, tell the students, “A meteorologist studies the
weather and predicts what is going to happen over time. The other career I heard in the
video was a paleontologist. Does anyone know what a paleontologist does?” Wait for
student volunteers, then, tell the students, “A paleontologist is a scientist who studies
fossils and bones to tell us things about the past, like dinosaurs.”
4. Say to the students, “Today, with your buddy, you are going to use PebbleGo to
research some different careers that the first graders might want to have someday.
Remember fourth graders, I don’t want you to tell your buddy what you want to be
when you grow up quite yet, we’re going to talk about that at the end of the day!”

B. Development:
1. Tell the students, “I have already pulled up the PebbleGo page with the different careers
on the first graders iPads. When I say so, you’re going to go on the iPads with your
buddy and look at some of the different careers that are listed. Click on some to learn a
bit more about the careers that the first graders are interested in. I’m going to give you
a few minutes to explore the different careers with your buddy, and then I will stop you
and give you the next direction.”
2. Allow the students to explore the PebbleGo page for about ten minutes.
3. After ten minutes or so, ding the bell to get the attention of the students.
4. Say to the students, “Now that you have had some time to look at the different careers
on the page, the first graders are going to choose the one that they want to be.
Remember, fourth graders, it’s okay if the first graders don’t choose the career that you
want to be. First graders, if you don’t see the career that you want to be when you grow
up, pick your favorite one that you found when you were exploring the page.”
5. Tell the students, “In a minute, we’re going to pass out a worksheet that asks some
questions about the career that the first grader picked. What you’re going to do is click
on that career, and read what is says under all of the different tabs. Then, read the
questions and write the answers to those questions on the line. Try to have your first
grade buddy write the answers!” Read the questions on the worksheet to the students.
6. Pass out the worksheets and allow the students time to explore the career they have
chosen and answer the questions about that career.
7. When the students are finished with the worksheet, have both of the buddies come up
and have it quickly scanned to make sure every answer is filled in.
C. Closure:
1. Once students have turned in their worksheets, give the students a few minutes to
explore other related science or social studies topics on PebbleGo.
2. After a few minutes of having everyone’s worksheets, ding the bell to get the attention
of the students.
3. Tell the students, “Now that everyone has finished, I want to see what careers all of you
want to be, from both classes. I need everyone to stand up at their seat. I’m going to call
on some students to share what career they want to have one day. If you have that
same career, I want you to sit down. That way, we can see how many of you said the
same thing!”
4. Ask for student volunteers to share out the careers that they want to have. If other
students chose that career, have them sit down. Continue on until all of the students are
sitting back down. Talk about what was seen when large groups of students sat down.
5. Tell the students, “First graders, can you thank the book buddies for coming and helping
you learn some more about careers?”
6. Have the fourth grade buddies line up and transition the first grade students into
packing up.

D. Accommodations/Differentiation:
 Students who have difficulty seeing can sit in the front of the group during the video.
 Students are purposefully paired with their buddies, depending on ability levels.

E. Assessment/Evaluation:
1. Formative
i. Student worksheets will be collected and reviewed. These worksheets will be
used later in the unit when the students need to write about what they want to
be when they grow up. If students do not have the correct answers, they will
look back on the website during intervention the next day to correct their
papers.
2. Summative
