PREFAcE

I am very much delighted to write this book with my experience in

acupuncture and research studies. In Chinese medicine, it is believed
that many diseases and ailments are caused by blockages within the
invisible meridians which circulate "chi" or life force around our body.
In any disease or pain, there is always a key point to it. Once the key
point is unlocked the channels and organs will function properly and
the healing energy can once again flow freely. The Eight Extraordinary
Meridians / “Qi” Vessels and the Twelve Primary Meridians /”Qi”
Channels comprise the main part of the channel system.
In this book concerns itself with functions, indications and
techniques related to the practical and theoretical understanding
and use of the Eight Extraordinary Meridians for effective treatment
to cure the disease immediately.
These meridian’s deep and superficial pathways, are discussed
individually, in connection with their function and use. Further I have
noted , how these meridians are mapping with endocrine ( Pituitary,
adrenal cortex, medulla, thyroid, ovaries and testes) functions and
psychiatric indications. The specific and general rules of usage of
these meridians are covered in detail.
During acupuncture treatment, satisfactory results can be
obtained only, when the four steps of Diagnosis, Point selection,
Correct point location, and necessary Needle insertion come together
properly. Here all the steps have been mentioned for the important
effective acupuncture Points. The main object is through this
Extraordinary meridian treatment , all our Acupuncture Doctors
will see all the patients are getting excellent, quick and permanent
relief from the disease.
I express my deep sense of gratitude to Dr. Sabir Abdullah.
MD.,(Acu), President ATAMA, and also my gratitude to my guide and
teacher Prof. Dr. S. Kathija Nachiar. MD. (Acu), Ph.D. for their able
guidance to write this book within short period of time.
I dedicate this book to my beloved Dr. D. Vadivel Mugundhan.
MA. Ph.D. Chairman, St. John Ambulance, Tamilnadu State, for
his support and encouragement to write this book.
Our aim is to achieve Drugless World before the year 2030, as
per our beloved leader Prof. Dr. Abdulla Sehu’s aim and dream. With
your sincere effort we will achieve it.
Best wishes by.
Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D.

EXTRAORDINARY MERIDIANS - INTRODUcTION
During normal health , the life energy flows through the
human body continuously without any interruption. This is
vital motivating force, which burns like a fuel all through in
every human life cycle. This is called “Qi” or “ CHI” or vital
energy. The Eight Extraordinary Meridians / “Qi” Vessels and
the Twelve Primary Meridians /”Qi” Channels comprise the
main part of the channel system. Most of the Eight Vessels
branch out from the Twelve Primary Meridians and share the
function of circulating “Qi” throughout body. These vessels
form a web of complex interconnections with the channels.
At the same time, each has its own functional characteristics
and clinic utility independent of the channels. In this book
concerns itself with functions, indications and techniques
related to the practical and theoretical understanding and
use of the Eight Extraordinary Meridians. These meridian’s
deep and superficial pathways, are discussed individually, in
connection with their function and use. Further we discuss
how these meridians are mapping with endocrine (Pituitary,
adrenal cortex, medulla, thyroid, ovaries and testes)
functions and psychiatric indications. In depth we will go
through functions of these Meridians in terms of the overall
body energy, and specifically, their indications in particular
disease states. The specific and general rules of usage of these
meridians are covered in detail. The main object is through
this extraordinary meridian treatment, all our Acupuncture
Doctors will see all the patients are getting excellent, quick
and permanent relief from the disease.

HISTORY OF EXTRAORDINARY MERIDIANS

The Eight vessels are known prior to the Ming Period. It
is found in the second part of the Nei Jing chapter of the book
Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen (The Yellow Emperor’s Classic,)
(Han dynasty, circa 100-300 B.C.) by Ling Shu. But some of
the vessels were mentioned in Bian Que’s classic Nan Jing

Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D. 7

(Classic on Disorders,) (Qin and Han dynasty, 221 B.C. to
220 A.D.). In 1572 Li, Shi-Zhen published a book Qi Jing
Ba Mai Chao and in this book all the Eight Extraordinary
Meridians are described. Until the present time relatively little
may be found in the literature about these special meridians.
It was the work of European Doctors of Oriental medicine
that has brought them into their present more extensive use.
Although they were discovered 2000 years ago, little has
been written about them. At present a lot of research is being
conducted, particularly in the country like Japan, Europe.
Since references from original Chinese sources are very
scarce, and references from Western textbooks are tentative,
esoteric or in disagreement with one another and I have used
my own judgment in selecting details and ideas.

Twelve Primary Meridians & 2 Extra

Meridians (Vessels)
The Meridian Set consists of 14 tuning forks designed to
be used with the 12 major (plus 2 Extra Vessel, DU and REN)
Acupuncture Meridians (qi pathways) and their respective
Acupoints (qi points). They can also be used on the reflex
zones of the feet and hands. The frequencies range from very
low to very high. The forks are listed below.
Meridians Points Meridians Points
Lung 11 Kidney 27
Large Intestine 20 Pericardium 9
Stomach 45 Triple Heater/Warmer 23
Spleen 21 Gall Bladder 44
Heart 9 Liver 14

Urinary Bladder 67 Governing Vessel (DU) 28
Qi (pronounced “chi”) is the life force energy that
circulates throughout the body via pathways called
Meridians. The qi in a given meridian is strongest during a

8 Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D.

specific two-hour interval of the twenty-four hour day. The
way qi travels in this cycle through the meridians is referred
to as the “Meridian clock.” When this flow is balanced and
harmonious, we experience physical and emotional wellbeing.
When the flow is blocked, erratic or depleted, we experience
physical or emotional disease. Qigong, acupuncture,
acupressure, and the Meridian tuning forks are tools which
help us to maintain a healthy flow of qi through the meridian
system.
Here will briefly review the twelve primary Meridians
and 2 Extra vessels i.e, Qi channels along with the Eight
extraordinary meridians. You should also know the organ’s Yin
and Yang. In our body, there are six Yang organs and six Yin
organs. Each Yang organ is associated with and harmonized
by a Yin organ. Paired Yin and Yang organs belong to the
same phase in the Five Phases. Their channels are sequential
to each other in the circulation of Qi, their functions are
closely related, and disease in one usually affects the other.
In Chinese medicine, the channel corresponding to the Yang
organ is often used to treat disorders of its related Yin organ.
In the limbs, the Yang channels are on the external side of
the limbs while the Yin channels are on the internal side.

Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D. 9

Generally speaking, the outsides of the limbs are more Yang
and are more resistant and prepared for an attack, while the
internal sides are more Yin and weaker.
The organs are further subdivided in order to distinguish
the different levels of the Yin/Yang characteristics. The Yang
organs are divided into
- Greater Yang (Taiyang)
- Lesser Yang (Shaoyang)
- Yang Brightness (Yangming)
The Yin organs are divided into
- Greater Yin (Taiyin),
- Lesser Yin (Shaoyin),
- Absolute Yin (Jueyin).
In the following discussion, all of the classifications will
be shown in the title, for example: the Lung Channel of Hand
Greater Yin. Along each meridian are ‘points’ which have very
specific functions.

Different Names of Eight Vessels/Meridians

1. Homeostatic Meridians:
These meridians serve the function of maintaining
homeostasis.
2. Extra Meridians.
This Meridians discovery is considerably later than the
twelve regular meridians, and they have been considered
as extra to these regular channels.
3. Odd Meridians.
The reason for this name is that some of them, such as
the Ren mai, the Du mai, and the Dai mai, are not paired.
These are single vessels.

Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D. 25

4. Miraculous Meridians.
This name was applied to these meridians by the French
because they were observed to be able to create therapeutic
effects when all other techniques had failed.
5. The Eight Psychic Channels.
Each of these channels exerts a strong effect upon psychic
function. The command points of the Extra meridians are
among the most important psychological points in the body.
6. Special Meridians.
They are referred to as special for the same reason, that
they have more powerful effect as the regular channels so
it is known as Special Meridians.
7. Comprehensive Points.
The effect of the treatment is more comprehensive on the
body and mind than that of the twelve main meridians.

Main Physiological Functions

These meridians have three main physiological functions.
1. First, they are known as reservoirs of energy. (An analogy to
bodies of water is as follows: the twelve regular meridians
would be considered rivers and the eight extra meridians
would be considered lakes or seas with tidal flow).
2. Second, they store energy for the body, regulate, receive
and give excess energy, and retain energy as the body
needs it, in order to maintain homeostasis, both in health
and during illness.
3. Third, they drain and eliminate aggressive energy as part
of the homeostasis function.

General Identity of Extraordinary Meridians

The extraordinary meridians have no internal organs of
their own except Ren mai and Du mai. They have no points of

26 Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D.

their own, except for the Ren mai and the Du mai. Each has a
Master point, with the exception of the Yang Qiao (BL-62) and
Yin Qiao (KI-6), but it is not the points of the Extra Meridians.
Except Du and Ren vessels, other Extra meridians are
getting points from the twelve regular meridians; only these
latter two include Luo or connecting points.
These Luo points are the principal links between the
other six extra meridians and the twelve main meridians.
• The Ren mai, Du mai and Chong mai have the same origin
in the abdomen, more specifically in the uterus.
• The Conception Vessel covers the front part of body.
• The Du mai covers the back part of the body.
• The Chong mai flows with the Kidney meridian both up
and down to Yongquan (KI-l).
• The Qiao mai are the yin and yang of the left and the right
sides of the body.
• The Wei mai are the yin and yang of the internal and
external parts of the body.

Special features of Extraordinary Meridians

The Extraordinary Meridians are used
• When treatment with the twelve regular meridians has failed.
• Because each of them is related to one or more particular
endocrine gland.
• Destroy aggressive energy that cannot be done by the use
of the twelve regular meridians.
• When there is a multiplicity of deficiencies all in the same
direction.
• When the pulses are balanced but the patient is still sick.
• If chronic diseases are affected, especially when the body
is extremely depleted of energy, where there are metabolic

Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D. 27

disorders and severe psychic strain and where the patient
feels weaken by regular needling.
• If a particular regular meridian is in difficulty and
cannot get cure by the treatment of that meridian, then
the meridian can be treated with the extra meridian
which has as one of its points, a point on that troubled
meridian.
• Most particularly this is true if the extra meridian has
many points on it from the regular meridian.

Extraordinary Meridians Procedure to be

adopted
1. These vessels are always used in pairs. (Ex:- the master
point of the Ren mai is always used with a couple point,
the master point of the Yin Qiao.)
2. The master point of each of these meridians is a distal
point on the limbs. Only one master and one couple point
are used.
3. The master point is placed first on the side of the sex. For
a woman this is the right side and for a man it is the left
side. The couple point is placed on the opposite side.
4. The master and couple points in pairs are such that one
is in the hand and the other is in the foot, so that, as
explained, if a needle will be in the hand on one side of the
body, the other needle will be in the opposite foot.
5. The needles are inserted vertically. There is no
manipulation of the needle.
6. The master point is inserted first-several minutes are
allowed to pass before the couple point needle is inserted.
7. Needles are retained until the meridian, which is ascendant
on the Chinese clock, is felt strongly and positively on the
pulse. For example, if this is done at 11 a.m., the needles
would be retained at most until the Heart meridian pulse

28 Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D.

was felt to be strong and of good quality relative to how
it was at the outset. The needles would then be removed
even if the other pulses were not as good.
8. One can use any other point on the extra meridian along
with master and couple points.
9. One may not use any other points on the body with the
exception of Yin Qiao when KI-18 and BL-l may be used
to stimulate the endocrine system.
10.The needles are generally left for a considerably longer
period of time than with the use of the regular meridian,
approximately one hour.
11.The couple point needle is to be removed first, several
minutes are allowed to pass and the master point needle
is then removed.
12. The extra meridian is best balanced by using its counterpart
for a period of approximately five minutes. For example,
if the Ren mai is used in a woman with LU- 7 on the right
and KI-6 on the left, at the end of this treatment it should
be balanced by using the Yin Qiao; that is, by putting the
needle first in KI-6 on the right and LU- 7 on the left for
five minutes. (All other rules are applicable here).
13. Time between treatments varies with the individual
meridians and the individual problem. It is not standard.
14. Moxa is contraindicated.
15. An extra meridian may be emptied of its excess of energy
by stimulating its master point.
16. If this stimulation of master point has not corrected the
general yin-yang equilibrium of the pulse, the couple
point is stimulated.
17. If this has still not given the desired result, the midline extra
meridian (Ren mai or Du mai) of the opposite sign is used.
18. This alternative rests on the fact that the excess energy of
the one sign flows into the midline extra meridian of the
opposite sign.

Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D. 29

If there is a predominance of yang, a yang extra meridian
should be used, or if there is a predominance of yin, a yin
extra meridian should be used.
If the pulses show a predominance of yang and the
symptom index suggests a yin extra meridian, say Ren mai,
the opposite yang meridian should be used which, in this
case, would be Du mai.

THE EIGHT EXTRAORDINARY MERIDIANS

QIGONG
An Introduction to QIGONG
In translating from Chinese into English there is not a
single equivalence of one word into another. There are often
multiple interpretations. Qigong does not have a singular
exact meaning, not least because there is no equivalent or
comparison in the West.
• Qi’ means Energy, Vitality or Life.
• ‘Gong’ means Working With, Developing or Cultivating.
• So, Qigong can mean
1. Working with Energy,
2. Developing Vitality, or
3. Cultivating Life.

Important Functions of Extra vessels

The Eight Extraordinary Vessel (EEV) are called the “Qi Jing
Ba Mai:
QI means energy, odd, strange or mysterious
JING means meridian or channel
BA means eight
MAI means vessels
The eight extraordinary meridians (EEV) are pathways of
energy (qi) that run deep within our bodies. They supply the

30 Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D.

12 regular meridians with qi and blood, supporting our DNA or
genetic heritage. They have no direct connections to the organ
systems and, with the exception of the pairing of Du Mai and
Ren Mai, they share points with the 12 regular meridians.
By utilizing the points on the hands and feet associated
with each meridian pairing contra laterally, the practitioner
duplicates the flow of energy called the microcosmic orbit
in Oriental medicine; this can be likened to a figure 8 or the
infinity symbol.
Serve as Qi Reservoirs. Because the eight vessels are
so different from each other, it is difficult to generalize their
characteristics and functions. However, Bian Que in his Nan
Jing specified one of the most common characteristics of
the eight vessels. He reported that the twelve organ-related
Qi channels constitute rivers, and the eight extraordinary
vessels constitute reservoirs. The reservoirs, especially the
Conception and Governing Vessels, absorb excess Qi from the
main channels, and then return it when they are deficient.
When the twelve primary channels are deficient in Qi,
the eight vessels will supply it. This store of Qi can easily
be tapped with acupuncture needles through those cavities,
which connect the eight vessels with the twelve channels.
The connection cavities behave like the gate of a reservoir,
which can be used to adjust the strength of the Qi flow in
the rivers and the level of Qi in the reservoir. Sometimes,
when it is necessary, the reservoir will release Qi by itself. For
example, when a person has had a shock, either physically
or mentally, the Qi in some of the main channels will be
deficient. This will cause particular organs to be stressed,
and Qi will accumulate rapidly around these organs. When
this happens, the reservoir must release Qi to increase the
deficient circulation and prevent further damage.
Among the eight vessels, the Thrusting Vessel, the
Governing Vessel, and the Conception Vessel play major roles
in guarding the abdomen, thorax, and the back.

Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D. 31

The Thrusting Vessel and the Conception Vessel also
regulate the changes of the life cycles, which occur at 7-year
intervals for women and 8-year intervals for men.
1. One of the most important functions of the eight vessels
is to deliver Jing Qi (Essence Qi, which has been converted
from
2. Original Essence and sexual Essence) to the entire body,
including the skin and hair. They must also deliver Jing Qi to
the five ancestral organs: the brain and spinal cord, the liver
3.
and gall bladder system, the bone marrow, the uterus, and
the blood system.
4.
The Eight Extraordinary Vessels (EEV)
Governing Vessel (Du Mai)
5. Conception Vessel (Ren Mai)
Thrusting or Penetrating Vessel (Chong Mai)
6. Girdle (or Belt) Vessel (Dai Mai)
Yang Heel Vessel (Yang chiao Mai)
7. Yin Heel Vessel (Yin chiao Mai)
Yang Linking Vessel (Yang wei Mai)
8. Yin Linking Vessel (Yin wei Mai).
Of the eight extra meridians, only two (Ren Mai and
Du Mai) have acupoints of their own. All the EEV have a
master point and a coupled point, which are on one of the
other twelve main meridians, and are activated by using a
master/coupled point technique. The master and coupled
points are always paired and used together.
Each master point is like an instant “light switch” that
immediately turns on the corresponding extraordinary vessel.
Coupled points are typically used after the master point has
been activated and has a lesser affect. Used in combination,
the master/coupled points are said to “open” its corresponding
extraordinary meridian, thus enabling it to absorb extra Qi,
creating a reservoir of energy.

32 Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D.

EEV are paired/coupled together. See the first two
columns of the chart below.
The master point for one of the meridians in the pair is
the coupled point for the other and vice versa. For example,
the master point of Ren Mai (LU-7) is always used with its
coupled point (KI-6), which is the master point of its paired
EEV, in this case the master point of Yin Qiao Mai (KI-6).

How to activate the Master point & coupled point

In general you activate the master point of the EEV you
are treating (due to symptomology) and then afterwards, you

Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D. 33

activate its coupled point. Experiment with how long you treat
each point and how much time between treating the paired points.
For women:
Activate the master point on the Right side then activate
the coupled point on the Left side.
For men:
Activate the master point on the Left side then activate
the coupled point on the Right side.
These 8 Extras are divided into two sets of four each - a
primary set and a secondary set. The four primary ones
operate within the torso, and are known as:
- Governor Channel/Du Mai,
- Conception Channel/Ren Mai,
- Belt Channel/Dai Mai, and
- Thrusting Channel/Chong Mai.
The four secondary ones, which back-up or support the
primary set and run into the arms and legs, are known as:
- Yang Bridge/Yang Qiao Mai,
- Yin Bridge/Yin Qiao Mai,
- Yang Linking/Yang Wei Mai, and
- Yin Linking/Yin Wei Mai.
These 8 Extras may be accessed and controlled by a special
group of points called the Master and Coupled Points, which
are described in detail later.
These 20 meridians/ channels/pathways constitute the full
number of channels in the body familiar in Acupuncture.
Nobody has any more or less.

Microcosmic Orbit
The Du, the Ren, the Chong and the Dai are the most
important of the Eight Extraordinary Meridians.

34 Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D.

The Du Mai Meridian flows from the tip of the coccyx up the
spine, over the head, and ends in the upper part of the mouth.
The Ren Mai Meridian flows from the perineum up along the
front mid-line of our torso, and ends in the lower mouth.

In the Microcosmic Orbit practice, we link the Ren and the

Du meridians into a single continuous circuit – which is how
energy circulated when we were in our mother’s womb.
The Chong Meridian flows vertically deep within the body,
along the front of the spine. It is our energetic core.
The Dai Mai Meridian circles the waist, and is the only
horizontally-flowing meridian. It acts as a kind of “belt” -
containing the other vertically-flowing meridians. The Dai
Meridian connect with the energy of the planets, stars and
galaxies, and then down to connect with the core of the earth.
In the Microcosmic Orbit practice, we link the Ren and
the Du meridians (Yin and Yang) into a single continuous
circuit – which is how energy circulated when we were in our
mother’s womb. All chakras are connected and activated.

Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D. 35

DU Mai Meridian (Governing Vessel)

This Meridian originates at Ming men and descends to

the perineum, emerging at CV-1/GV-1. Then it continues to

Ren Mai Meridian (conception Vessel)

Originates at the perineum and passes through the

uterus and connects with CV-1. Then it follows the ren
meridian up to CV-24. Along the path it connects internally
with the SP, LV and KD meridians. At CV-24 a second branch
rises upwards and encircles the mouth and then rises to the
eyes at ST-1. A separate branch originates in the pelvic cavity
and rises up along the back.
This meridian is also known as Conception vessel and it
is Sea of Yin.

Energy Areas.
Face, thorax, abdomen, genitals, throat, chest, lungs
endocrine, urinary and digestive systems
Speciality of the Meridian:
It is known as “Sea of Yin:” influences the yin, essence
and fluids. Regulates female cycles, menstruation (irregular,
leukorrhea), reproduction. Effects male genitalia, hernia, sexual
desire, impotence Gastrointestinal issues, digestion. Controls
perineum, pubis, abdomen, thorax, throat, lips, face, eyes.
Diseases cure:
Tense or painful feeling in abdomen, acute and chronic
diarrhea, hemorrhage. Hernia, leukorrhea, tumor, disorder
of menstrual period, dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, sterility
(except in virgins). Tooth pain, swollen throat, heart, chest
pain, difficulty or inability to swallow, coughing with sputum.
Lumbago, cold in lumbar abdominal regions. Diabetes,
asthma, bronchitis, pleurisy, cough. Influenza, breast
abscess, chest and heart pain, epilepsy, eczema.
Ren Mai finally at a glance
The Ren mai is useful in treating cervical problems,
particularly in men. Ren mai corrects the lower part of the
spine, thoracic and lumbar particularly in women.
It has an effect upon all of the functions below the
umbilicus, including reproductive issues. It is the parent
meridian or reservoir for all the Yin meridians of the body.
This meridian also is the irrigation system of the Lung,
draining excess or bad energy from the Lung through Lung 1.
The master point of the Ren mai, LU- 7 tends to close
the Lung so that the Lung may function more efficiently. The
Lungs control the head and make the energy for the entire
body. The master point treatment remove the negative energy
from the Lung and enhances its function to maintain healthy
energy. This meridian balances the dilatation and contraction
of blood vessels which of course, plays apart in many
headaches. The meridian has a direct effect on urogenital
problems in those areas in men.

44 Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D.

The couple point of Ren mai is KI-6. It is a powerful point
on the deficient kidney meridian, has a direct effect in the
thyroid. Couple point K-6 has a strong influence on energy in
the head. It balances energy on both sides of the body, and it
has a direct effect on the bladder and particularly on sexual
organs. K-6 is a strong psychological point for anger of the
paranoid type. The Ren meridian receives and transports the
qi of all the yin meridians, and therefore regulates all female
diseases ie., uterus, menstruation, menopause, pregnancy,
leukorrhea, impotence , Gastrointestinal issues, digestion.

Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D. 45

chong Mai Meridian (Thrusting or PenetratingVessel)

Originates in the ming men and passes through the

uterus and down to CV-1. From here it emerges at ST-30 and
continues upwards along the kidney meridian to KD-21. It then
flows up the throat, encircles the mouth and continues up to
the forehead. A second branch flows from CV-1 inside the spine
to the UB-23 area. A third branch flows downwards towards the
foot where it splits into 2 branches and follows the Kidney and
Spleen meridians. It is known as Regulator and obstructor of Qi,
Penetrating vessel of Groin, and Sea of twelve meridians.

neurological and musculoskeletal diseases like sadness,
mental fatigue, antisocial attitude, lassitude and laziness,
madness, epilepsy, spastic uterus, feeling of excessive energy
in the skin, diseases of the spinal cord.
Yang chiao Mai meridian finally at a glance:
It balances yang where there is insufficiency of yin and
controls yang on both sides of body. controls joints (in men).
It directly give energy to pituitary gland, and by this causes
the release of ACTH, and indirectly give effect Adrenal gland.
For severe arthritis problem if Yang Chiao were treated
consistently, this extraordinary meridian is of value in arthritis
problems in men, particularly where there is swelling. It is
a specific treatment for arthritis in men and in connection
with the other treatments of more local nature. There has
been considerable success in mobilizing the use of all the
joints involved, resulting in a decrease in swelling, increase
in motion and decrease in pain.
The Yang Chiao should always be considered in arthritis
in men, particularly in older persons with a long-standing
condition. It is advisable the treatment is followed by DU mai
for 5 minutes.
When treatment is given to women we have to check the
result after 3 days whether any negative reaction is there or
not. After that depends upon the result we should continue
the treatment.

Yin chiao Mai Meridian (Yin Heel Vessel)

Originates at K-2, travels upward to K-6 and then to

K-8. It then continues up the medial aspect of the leg to the
inguinal region where it enters the genitals. From the genitals
it travels up the anterior abdomen and the chest to ST-12.
From ST-12 it travels to ST-9 and along the cheek to UB-1
where it connects with the UB, GV and Yang Qiao Mai vessels.
From there it rises upwards and enters the brain. It is also
known as Yin Heel Vessel, Vessel of Yin Exciter, Negative Leg
channel, and Accelerator of Yin.

Yin chiao Mai Meridian finally at a glance:
It controls the ascent of fluids and the descent of Qi .
It controls yin of both sides of body. It indirectly give effect
to adrenal cortex through K-18 and reproductive hormones
through UB-1.
This meridian is generally used for articular problems in
women, often with the addition of Kidney 18, which brings
the adrenal cortex and ACTH into play.
In addition, the master point is KI-6 and all of the other
points on the meridian are Kidney points so that by using
this meridian, we also enhance Kidney function.

Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D. 65

The couple point, LU- 7, closes and strengthens the Lungs
which, according to the theory of the five elements, is the mother
of the Kidneys and therefore a support for the Kidneys. Kidney 6
is a very powerful point, particularly for people with long lasting
anger. In addition, follow with Ren mai for five minutes. During
treatment in a male patient, observe after 3 days to find out
negative reaction to proceed further.

Summary
We have discussed so far the details of Eight Extraordinary
Meridians (Vessels) and finally I have summarized the
speciality of these Eight vessels and benefits to the human
society. The eight extraordinary meridians, pathways of
energy (qi), run deep within our bodies, and supply the 12
regular meridians with qi and blood, supporting our DNA or
genetic heritage.
By utilizing the points on the hands and feet associated
with each meridian pairing contra laterally, the practitioner
duplicates the flow of energy called the “microcosmic orbit”
in Oriental medicine; this can be likened to a figure 8 or the
infinity symbol.
transformational
The 8-Extra dynamics
Vessels
pertaining
reflect to humanity,
the evolutionary/
ethnicity

and gender. If certain things like diabetes, breast cancer or

heart disease “runs in your family,” 8-Extra therapy can work
against these conditions arising in yourself, 8-Extra therapy
can actually change your constitution, dealing with mutations
to DNA and RNA. It’s therefore the treatment of choice when
confronted with cases of cancer, AIDS, tropical diseases and
biological warfare.
chong Mai, is responsible for a person’s gender, ethnicity,
nature, disposition.
Ren Mai is responsible for the needs and also be a raw
material for the same (Yin).
Du Mai give construction (Yang).
Yang Wei Mai is acting with bodily functionings, external
climactic factors, i.e., permanent deviation of the mouth
Yin Wei Mai is acting with structural changes, Internal/
mental factors; it deals with the past and future issues of a
person’s inner life.

100 Prof. Dr. P.Sivagnanam. MD (Acu), Ph.D.

Yin Qiao Mai is acting with how one perceives themselves at
the present moment
Yang Qiao Mai pertains to how one perceives the world at the
present moment.
Dai Mai revolves around things – issues, emotions – a person
has held on to for a very long time, and not released
The 8-Extra Vessels derive their Qi from the Kidneys
and the Jing stored therein to support Post-Natal Qi . They
thereby play a major role in the cycles of growth, development,
maturity, conception and pregnancy. This is supported
via Blood and body fluids. The 8-Extras generate bone via
marrow. The 8-Extras nourish the brain. The 8-Extras have
a relationship with the Luo Vessels, Divergent Meridians, and
Yuan-source points, and relate to the Divergent Meridians
by way of the bones/joints (the yin of yang). Hence, these
eight meridians are revered in Oriental medicine as Precious,
Marvelous, Extraordinary, Curious, Amazing you name the
Superlative!.
