Free-Fall Lab

Purpose: To understand the role of air resistance in the rate at which an object falls then apply that
knowledge to construct a parachute.

Hypothesis: which material will be most effective in slowing down the rate at which a cup drops (gray
fabric, blue fabric, filter paper) Why?

_____________________________________________________________

Materials:

Three clear plastic cups, hole puncher, blue fabric, gray fabric, scissors, string

Procedures:

1. Weigh each piece of fabric and record the weight in grams

2. Take 1 cup and hole punch all 4 sides equidistant of each other (equal separation)
3. Then take each piece of material you are given and hole punch 4 corners of the material
4. Take the string and cut 4 pieces then use those pieces to attach the material to the cup
5. Choose the person to record (write) the time, choose the person to time the drop of the
fall, choose a person to drop the cups (hint: the tallest person in the group)
6. Once you have finished your parachutes go out into the walkway and drop them and record
the time it takes for each cup to fall, that will be your first trial
7. Once you are finished wait patiently for your other classmates to complete their
parachutes We will walk as a class to the 3rd building 2nd floor to drop the cups with each
different piece of material.
8. Record the time for each drop

Conclusion:

1. What happened to the cups when dropping them by the walkway?__________________________
