In the most recent documents from FIBA highlighting the changes to the 3- person officiating
mechanics, there have been some questions raised recently about the ‘long switch’ after certain
foul situations.
Within the FIBA document, they reference ‘no long switch’ after a foul call and only use the
example of “Foul on the Opposite Side by Lead” (see below diagram).
Please keep in mind that the philosophy has remained unchanged, which is “call the foul, report,
and then go opposite”. The example below shows the Lead calling the foul opposite side (which in
this case is an offensive foul) and then going back to become new Trail. The question then
becomes what happens when the Trail official in the backcourt calls a defensive foul on the
opposite side? The correct procedure is that the Trail official would report the foul and stay
opposite as Trail. This again would eliminate the ‘long switch’.
