Indian father dies on flight

n Indian father travelling
from Mumbai to Auckland
for the first time to meet his
accountant son died in-flight onboard
Singapore Airlines on Friday,
February 23.
The 72-year-old Narendra Mafatlal
Shah of Mumbai was on a trip of
his life with wife Pratibha Shah, to
meet their son and his family when
he suffered a medical event onboard
Singapore Airlines flight SQ 285.
Expectedly, son Hiral Shah, an
Auckland based accountant, and
his family were in shock when The
Indian Weekender first spoke to them.
However, it was mum Pratibha
Shah – who was flying for the first
time and could barely speak English
– for whom this entire experience
was one of disbelief, grief and
anguish.
“My husband started feeling
discomfort in breathing just about
two hours into the flight from
Singapore,” Mrs Shah told The
Indian Weekender.
“We were carrying his nebuliser,
but he was feeling too exhausted to
use it himself and asked me to seek
assistance from the crew in flight.
“I told an Indian-origin air hostess
about his discomfort, as she was the
only one who could speak in the

However, Mrs Shah believes
that she did not receive much
compassionate assistance from the
staff on the aircraft – a charge that

with.
“I had asked the air hostess to
provide oxygen to my husband
as soon as he started complaining
discomfort in breathing,” Mrs Shah
said.
“But she said that they could
provide oxygen only in the case of
someone becoming unconscious.
“I tried requesting her to provide
with oxygen-mask that appears in
the aircraft’s in-flight safety manual
video about safe landing.
“But I was told that it is reserved
for emergency landing only.
“In the end, we were provided with
a blanket and two Panadol tablets as
my husband was also feeling a bit
cold. Since then I have been trying
to comfort my husband by gently
massaging his chest for the remaining
8-9 hours of journey.
“It was only towards the end of
the journey that my husband wished
to go to the toilet, and I assisted him
to the toilet and asked to not close it
from inside.
“When he did not come out for
10 minutes, and I could sense any
movement then I raised the alarm
with a fellow Hindi-speaking
passenger.

“The crew opened the door and
found my husband lying down with
little movement.
“They attended him then, and a
little bit later I was told that a doctor
on the plane had attended him but
could not save him.
The distraught son also had some
questions in mind for which he is
seeking answers.
“What bewilders me most is the
fact that if a doctor was present in
the flight who eventually attended

no one reached out to him in the first
place when he first complained of a
breathing problem,” Hiral Shah said.
“My mother did everything right
in her control to seek assistance from
the staff.
“My understanding is that the
staff would have relayed it to her
manager or other team members and

Small business payroll
subsidy renewed

S
upport for small businesses through
a payroll management subsidy is to
continue for a further two years.
Revenue and Small Business Minister
Stuart Nash said in a media statement on
Tuesday, February 27, that Cabinet has agreed
to extend the subsidy for professional payroll
intermediaries who manage an employer’s
PAYE obligations, after the previous
government decided to end the scheme in
early 2018.
Inland Revenue currently offers a payroll
subsidy of up to $10 per pay-run to listed PAYE
intermediaries who manage the income tax
obligations of eligible employers.
Small businesses have the least payroll
capability and the subsidy allows them to
outsource this task and offers a significant
benefit.
The Taxation (Annual Rates for 2017–18,
Employment and Investment Income, and
Remedial Matters) Bill  currently before
Parliament proposed repealing the subsidy
on April 1, 2018.
However feedback during the Select
Committee stage was critical of the move. The
announcement from the office of the Minister
reflects the Committee’s recommendations.
“The subsidy was introduced in 2006 as a
way to encourage small businesses to use the
services of payroll professionals to handle their
PAYE obligations. The support from Inland
Revenue allows small business operators more
free time in order to focus on growing and
operating their business,” Mr Nash said.
Cabinet has decided to renew the subsidy
for another two years, until  April 1, 2020.

The eligibility threshold for accessing the
subsidy will be lowered from 1 April 2019, to
businesses with less than $50,000 of income
tax and superannuation obligations (PAYE
and ESCT).
It’s estimated around 24,000 employers
who use a payroll intermediary fall into
this category.
Small business owners told the select
committee the subsidy should remain until
PAYE process improvements, such as payday
reporting of PAYE information, are bedded in.
  “Small businesses are a vital part of our
economy. At a time when those companies
will need to get to grips with other changes in
the PAYE process, they need this support to
allow them to continue to focus on their core
enterprise,” Mr Nash said.

Shabana Azmi and her husband, noted poet
and lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar,
will bring a very personal story to theatre
audiences to New Zealand.
The famous duo will be starring in Kaifi Aur
Main— a theatrical presentation celebrating the
life and artistry of progressive Urdu poet and
film lyricist Kaifi Azmi as seen through the eyes
of his wife, noted stage actress Shaukat Kaifi.

he excitement and the buzz build
up  with just a few hours to go for the
much-awaited Musical Programme of
Rangmanch – Down Memory Lane.
The rehearsals are in full swing; the artistes
are all in their final stages of preparation –
practising and perfecting their numbers.

Shabana Azmi, the daughter of Kaifi and
Shaukat, will portray her mother on stage,
while her husband takes on the role of Kaifi.
Azmi, who made her film debut in 1974 has
appeared in more than 120 Hindi and Bengali
films and several foreign projects as well. Apart
from being an actor, she is also a social and
women’s right activist. Her films such as Arth,
Khandhar, Paar and Godmother earned her the
coveted National Film Award.
She has always experimented with the kind
of work she does, and we have seen that in her
work in Deepa Mehta’s Fire, Shyam Benegal’s
Nishant, Junoon, Satyajit Ray’s Shatranj ke
Khilari and several other films.
Not only in art cinema, she has also made a
mark in commercial cinema with hits such as
Amar Akbar Anthony and Parvarish.
Once pointing out the differences in various
media form, she once remarked that theatre
was really the actor’s medium; the stage was
the actor’s space; cinema was the director’s
medium; and television was a writer’s medium.
Her husband, Javed Akhtar, also needs no
introductions. The noted poet is the recipient
of Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Sahitya
Akademi Award and has five National Film
Awards to his credit.
His scripts has been some of the most
successful works in Bollywood including
Andaz, Haathi Mere Saathi, Seeta Aur Geeta,
Yaadon ji Baaraat, Zanjeer, Deewar, Sholay,
Kranti, Mr India and in recent times films such
as Dil Chahta Hai, Rock On! and Zindagi Na
Milegi Dobara.
Kaifi Azmi’s ghazals and film songs will be
performed by talented ghazal singer Jaswinder
Singh with live orchestra.
Jaswinder Singh is a new age Ghazal singer
and has performed in more than 300 live
concerts nationally and internationally in USA,
Canada, UK, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore,
Dubai and Muscat.

felt very happy and confident in saying that
this show will have its own special touches
and be a bit different from several other
Bollywood shows happened in this wonderful
multicultural city.
He joined all the performers and the back-
stage crew and the admin team of Rangmanch
in extending their invitation to all to come
for the show. Anyone who doesn’t  come will
certainly miss the magic of the old Bollywood
songs which have remained forever gold.
Anyone coming will surely get a feel of
the amazing preparation the group has done.
Gopal, Arif and everyone in the team are ready

Arpita  is also a happy member of the
performing group, who needs no introduction
to the music lovers of Auckland. A super
talented singer took the Auckland audience by
storm a few years back when she first made her
debut here.
Well trained in Hindustani Classical music,
she is from New Delhi with a rich family
lineage in music. She has been a judge in a
music contest in Auckland for several Years.
She loves Mohammed Rafi and Kishore
Kumar. As a singer of immense skill, she
is equally adept with songs of both Lata
Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, the two iconic
playback singers of Bollywood.
She will be the perfect foil for both Gopal
and Arif when they sing a few duets together.

Community drenches in colours at ISKCON Holi

oli celebrations at the ISKCON
Temple are known to be one of the
biggest in New Zealand. This event
is visited by not just members of the Indian
community but by almost every ethnic
group present in Auckland.
Hosted at the massive open grounds of
the Hare Krishna Temple in Kumeu, almost
40 kilometres from Auckland CBD on
Sunday, February 25, the event witnesses
one of the biggest footfalls in the country
for Holi celebrations.
Like every year, the event had Indian
classical dancers performing on the stage
in front of thousands of people drenched
very exciting part of the event besides the

10-YEAR BUDGET OPEN FOR PUBLIC DEBATE

uckland Council’s 10-year
Budget, released today for
consultation, will focus on
building infrastructure and providing
more transparency about what
ratepayer money will be spent on.
The council’s consultation runs
from February 28 to March 28 and
is encouraging Aucklanders to give
their feedback on important issues
such as investing in critical transport
infrastructure through a regional fuel
tax and targeted rates to clean up
Auckland’s beaches.
Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said,
“Our 10-year Budget sets out the
critical investment and new funding
mechanisms needed to ensure our
city can address challenges such
as traffic congestion, housing
affordability, and protection of our
environment.
“It outlines how we intend to do
this while keeping rates low and
reasonable.
“This 10-year Budget will
see  Auckland  Council’s transport
infrastructure spend increase from
$7.9 billion to over $11 billion for the
next decade. The fuel tax will provide
up to $1.5 billion, plus government
subsidies on a dollar-for-dollar basis,
increasing our ability to meet our
transport needs.
“Targeted rates addressing water
quality and environmental issues will
mean that Aucklanders know exactly
where their money is being spent.
For an average of $1.70 a week per
household, we can address years of
underinvestment in our environment
to clean up our streams and beaches,
and protect Kauri from dieback
disease.
“It will make our environment
cleaner and water quality better.
It will make beaches safer for
our children and grandchildren to
swim in.
“This 10-year Budget will see low
and reasonable general rates rises.
For the rest of the current council
term, general rates rises will be held
to 2.5 per cent.  This is needed for the
council to deliver vital services to the
community and to start to tackle the
problems Aucklanders want us to fix.
“Tackling congestion and cleaning
up our beaches cannot be left in the
too hard basket. We need to deal with
them now and not leave them for
future generations to solve.
“A wide cross-section of
Aucklanders will be surveyed
to ensure we get a full range of
opinions,” Mr Goff said.
Items for consultation include:
the introduction of a regional fuel
tax to fund critical investment in
transport infrastructure
introduction of a water quality
targeted rate to raise $400 million to
fund the Water Quality Improvement
Programme to significantly reduce
wastewater overflows into our
harbours
introduction of a natural
environment targeted rate to raise
either:
an additional $123 million to fund
additional projects to protect our
natural environment and tackle kauri
dieback disease, or
an additional $279 million for
kauri dieback and targeted ecological
protection
average general rates rises of 2.5
per cent for the first two years and
3.5 per cent for each year after that

the entire country’s continuing
support for Christchurch’s recovery
and regeneration last week at the civic
remembrance service, which was held to mark
the seventh anniversary of the February 22,
2011, earthquake.
“The promise I want to make today is that the
whole country is still just as behind the people
of Canterbury today as they were with you on
that tragic day seven years ago.
"We will continue to stand alongside you as
you rebuild a city that captures the spirit that
has flourished over the last seven years.
"As you move forward with your recovery,
we will stand alongside you,’’ the PM said,
while addressing a-1000-strong gathering in
front of the National Earthquake Memorial
in the Garden City. During the service, the
names of the 185 people who lost their lives
in the earthquake were read out and then at
12.51 – the time the quake struck seven years
ago – the memorial site fell quiet as a minute’s
silence was observed. At the end of the service
the Prime Minister joined the Mayor, family
members and survivors in laying wreaths and
flowers at the base of the memorial wall.
The service was organised by Christchurch
City Council and hosted in partnership with the
Quake Families Trust.

Television (CTV) building, where 115
people lost their lives as the building
collapsed in the earthquake of February 22,
2011, was also open to public after a private
blessing. The ceremony was attended by the
bereaved families, whose feedback played
an important part in design and landscaping
the site. Their wishes have been carefully
incorporated into the design. Led by the city’s
new Crown company - Ōtākaro Ltd, which
began the landscaping work in October last year,
the site of devastation has been transformed
into a peaceful place to sit and reflect.

India-NZ RECP may be option in face of FTA
delays: INZBC Chair
W
ith dairy being the stumbling
block in getting a full free trade
agreement (FTA) between India and
New Zealand across the line any time soon,
the in-negotiation Regional Comprehensive
Economic Partnership (RCEP), may be the way
forward for India-NZ trade ties to grow.
This is according to Robert Barker, Chairman
of India New Zealand Business Council
(INZBC), who was speaking on February 22,
at the Council’s first event of the Christchurch
chapter this year. “This is definitely the route
which indicates progress at this stage, and we
have seen some good intentions from the new
Labour Government as regards to this. The two
PMs (India’s and NZ’s) who met late last year
in Manila, have both expressed their desire
in carrying this forward. INZBC, as one of
the many stakeholders, always keeps putting
forward our views to the concerned authorities.”
Meanwhile, the event called India Unplugged
saw two notable speakers sharing their insights
on the Indian market. First was Jo Pennycuick,
Managing Director, Redesign Group – which
works in the hospitality, commercial and retail
sectors designing spaces within airports and
malls around the world. “We have had the
opportunity to work in many airports in India
including Delhi T3, Bangalore, Chandigarh,
Hyderabad and Mumbai,” she said.

here are 16 countries involved in RCEP:
the 10 members of ASEAN—Brunei-
Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia,
Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines,
Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam plus the six
countries with which ASEAN has free trade
agreements—Australia, China, India, Japan,
Korea, and New Zealand. These six countries
are known as the ASEAN Free Trade Partners
(AFPs).
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and Trade, “RCEP has the potential to increase
business across the board in New Zealand.
It’s a comprehensive agreement covering
trade in goods, trade in services, investment,
economic and technical cooperation,
intellectual property, competition, e-commerce
(digital trade), dispute settlement/legal and
institutional issues. New Zealand already has
FTAs with some of the countries involved in
RCEP, and has concluded TPP negotiations
with several others. Existing FTAs will remain
in place, and RCEP will help create new FTA
relationships where they do not already exist.
It may also be an opportunity to improve at the
margin on some of our existing agreements.”

overnment by its own admission is working on the nitty-gritty of its immigration
policy.
Given the fact that Labour Party had run a loud election campaign of cutting
immigration numbers between 20,000 and 30,000 a year, from record levels of around
70,000, it is interesting to note that the government had not included immigration in its
first hundred day plan.
The recent most Statistics NZ press release confirms that the annual net migration rate
continues to remain moderately high in January, despite some minimal fall in numbers.
Annual net migration was at 70,100 in the year to January this year, from 71,300 in January
2017, Statistics New Zealand said.
Clearly the government has not yet taken any decisive action to disturb record
immigration numbers.
On the other hand, the government continues to maintain ambiguity on how best to
address (read reduce) international student numbers.
By its own admission government’s persistence to take away study-rights from international
students enrolled in low-quality education courses can bring 7000-10000 fewer students in
the country every year, which many experts argue will translate to a rough figure of $261
million per year.
The feel of this money that could potentially be lost would depend on the subjective
choice of the readers, depending upon which side of political divide one is.
Regardless of the divide, it seems that the challenge of managing mutually competing-
goals of maintaining government coffers, ensuring regular supply of skilled workforce
to employers and businesses, and achieving some aspirational goals around immigration
numbers, have caught up with them.
Indeed, cutting down the number of international students is an aspirational goal,
especially when the country is reeling with acute skill-shortage across several sectors and
regions.
The Immigration Minister Ian Lees-Galloway is currently meeting representatives from
several sectors including mulling on a report from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and
Employment (MBIE) on impacts of removing work rights from low-quality educational
courses.
The Minister and other senior members of the government are seen publically
acknowledging the skill-shortage in different sectors and regions, particularly in rural New
Zealand.
However, they are not choosing to utilise those international students who are willing to
pursue a career in those sectors, by first getting the education in NZ and then getting job
experience in those sectors in the hope that they can utilise the pathway to residency.
Instead, the government is choosing to demonise the internationally established pathway
to residency which is offered to international students around the world as a “backdoor
to immigration.”
The fact that government is not ready to clean its own mess, if there is a mess, in student-
migrant worker exploitation within NZ, and instead mulling on a knee-jerk or not carefully
planned policy on immigration, focussing on “record level of immigration.”
Any policy focusing just on “record level of immigration numbers” would not be able to
address the pressing challenges of NZ economy – getting skilled workers in places where
needed and supporting $5 billion export education industry.

F
or India to become a $5 trillion economy,
the government needs to go from being
a spender to an even greater enabler
of businesses than it currently is. Debates
about the appropriate level of government
spending abound.
The tight balance between spending to boost
critical sectors versus managing a fiscal deficit
is a tightrope the government must walk.
Numbers such as the $526 billion
infrastructure gap suggest that innovation in
policy will be essential for India to truly bridge
this gap, create jobs and generate growth.
Our premise is that while spending by the
government is important, it needs to focus much
more on how to enable businesses, especially
private investment in infrastructure.
According to a World Bank report,
government spending as a percentage of GDP
has averaged at 10.29 percent between 1960
and 2016, with the number in 2016 being 11.65
percent.
There is pressure around both the fiscal
deficit and revenue deficit in India.
In addition, no remarkable change in tax
revenues is expected soon that would provide a
significant increase to government spending --
therefore it will be wise to assume that spending
as a percentage of GDP will not see significant
change upwards any time soon.
Hence for India to create necessary
infrastructure and jobs it is essential to allow
private capital to invest.
The government must continue to spend and
efficiently allocate public finances, but to truly
push up growth rates and aspire to more than
double the size of the economy, it is imperative
that more thought is given to measures to boost
private investment. The recent policy by the

If infrastructure sectors such as ports,
refineries, renewable energy, power
transmission, mining, toll-roads, water and
irrigation can all be categorised between the
“financially viable” and the “economically
value-creating but not fully financially viable”,
then the former needs effective and transparent
regulations while the latter needs government
spending in addition to effective regulations.
The above analysis needs to be based on
robust cash-flow models and past project
experience.
The bifurcation is important because for
financially viable sectors the government must
push for regulations that attract capital.
Tax policies to boost capital expenditure
such as competitive accelerated depreciation,
tax-free windows and centralised clearance
windows would be the key.
While for the sectors that deliver economic
value but aren’t fully financially feasible,
government spending in varying degrees will

be required.
What is important to realise is that high
quality infrastructure will be essential to
provide India an opportunity to push up growth
rates. It is simply not possible for government
spending to bear the entire burden of the
infrastructure spending.
According to a World Bank global ranking
of trade- and transport-related infrastructure for
2016, the Netherlands was given 4.29 points
and Singapore 4.20.
India in this ranking was at 3.34 points,
significantly lower at 35th rank versus the
Netherlands at 4th and Singapore at 5th
position.
It is interesting to note that according to
the World Bank, government spending in the
Netherlands was at 25.04 percent of GDP, while
the same number for Singapore was at 11.28
percent.
While not all government spending is on
infrastructure, what the data seems to suggest
is that different countries, given their economic
dynamics, have used different tools to boost 17
infrastructure.
It isn’t essential for a government to spend
a significant percentage of GDP to be a high-
quality infrastructure country.
A $5 trillion economy is a target that is worth
aspiring for. Infrastructure spending will have
to form a significant component of the value-
creation in the economy.
The positive multiplier effect of infrastructure
creation cannot be overemphasised in terms of
job creation, economic growth and national
prosperity.
It is time for the Indian government to pay
greater attention to its role as an enabler and
facilitator of infrastructure.

A
New Zealand-based air accident
investigator is arriving in the country to
carry out an independent investigation
on Cessna 172 aircraft, registration DQFTR that
crashed in Vanua Levu on Monday.
Civil Aviation Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum
said Andrew McGregor, who specialised in
providing air accident investigation services
and forensic engineering, was appointed by
Government to carry out an independent
investigation.

Investigation Commission to assist with air
accident investigations.
“In Fiji, he was most recently engaged by
the Fijian Department of Civil Aviation to
investigate the crash of a Cessna 172 plane that
crashed in the mountains North East of Nadi in
2007. He led the investigation into the helicopter
crash off the coast of Nadi in 2006,” Mr Sayed-
Khaiyum said.
“Upon his arrival, Mr McGregor will
immediately be transported to the crash site
to begin the investigation into the cause of the
crash.”
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said Mr McGregor would
then report regularly to the Department of Civil
Aviation on his findings.
“We will, of course, update the public on the
findings of the investigation as they arise, but
anticipate it will take some time to determine
exactly what happened.”
The Pacific Flying School Cessna 172 plane
went missing after it failed to land at Labasa
Airport last week. PFS instructor Iliesa Nawalo
and pilot trainee Merelisita Lutu were on board
the plane when it went missing.
Their bodies were discovered during a joint
search by teams from the Fiji Police Force
and the Republic of Fiji Military Force in the
Delaikoro Mountain area where the wreckage of
the plane was found last week.

his was a creation of necessity that
truly came of age in the 1970’s when
the chef of a famous Delhi restaurant
added tomato and cream to the gravy, thus
transforming the simple peasant dish into the
world-famous buttery delicacy.
Ever since, this classic recipe has remained
largely unchanged.
The key is in the lentil itself: the whole
black gram or urad dal. Of all the lentils
that were common in the kitchens of 1960’s
India, the urad dal variety has become the
most ubiquitous and is now found across
the country.
There are infinite ways to make a dal;this
recipe aims to keep it simple and delicious.

Soaking Time: 6 Hours to overnight

INGREDIENTS:
• 1/2 cup black lentils (whole)
• 2 Tbsp dried kidney beans
• 2 cups water
• 1/2 tsp red chili powder
• 1 Tbsp unsalted butter
• 4 whole dried red chilies
• 2 tsp cumin seeds
• 1 onion chopped
• 2 tsp ginger paste
• 4 Tbsp plain yoghurt whisked
• 2-3 green chilies julienned
• 4 Tbsp tomato puree
• 1 tsp garam masala powder
• Salt to taste
• 1/2 cup fresh coriander leaves finely
chopped
• 1/2 cup full cream
METHOD
• Rinse the lentils, removing any stones
or debris. Rinse the kidney beans.
Place lentils and beans in a large bowl,
cover with fresh water and set aside to
soak overnight.
• Drain the lentils and place in a heavy
bottom pan with 3 cups of fresh water,
add red chilli powder, 1 Tbsp of butter and
salt. Bring the lentils to a boil on high heat,
then reduce the heat to medium. Cover and
cook the lentils for 25-30 minutes, stirring
occassionally.
• More water can be added if the consistency
is too thick (in a pressure cooker, it will

arch is the beginning of autumn,
and gateway to winters to be
approached in couple of months.
There are some seasonal changes you can
notice like shortening of days and a bit milder
morning and evening hour’s temperature.
From this month all summer season
vegetables start wilting as their life cycles are
on the verge of ending. This time vegetable
gardeners should clean up the area for winter
vegetables.
Crop Rotations
Rotation means planting of next vegetable
on the same piece of land or bed when the first
crop is over. The scientific reasons of rotation
are not only balancing the texture and fertility
of soil but also protect crops against some
common diseases and pests. Those vegetables
having common diseases and pests should not
to be repeated on the same bed, for example
crops like potato, tomato, eggplants, chillies,
peppers and capsicums are never to be repeated
on the same bed due to identical disease and
pests. Other points like heavy feeder followed
by light feeder vegetable for example sweet
corn is the best choice after potato crop, deep
rooted vegetables by shallow rooted vegetables,
legume or pulses vegetables by non legume
or pulses vegetables. For example tomato,
egg plant, chillies, capsicums, beans, should
be replaced by winter crops like cabbage,
cauliflower, broccoli, onion and garlic. We can
likewise make other combinations keeping the
principles of rotation in mind.
Winter Vegetables
Winter vegetables are cole crops like
cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels
sprout, khol rabi or knol khol, green vegetables
like spinach, bok choi, mustered, fenugreek,
salad crops like Chinese cabbage, leek,
coriander, underground vegetables like potato,
radish. Onion, garlic, turnips, pod vegetables
like garden peas, broad beans, runner beans
and some miscellaneous vegetables which by

Nursery Raising
Nursery raising is a simple but slightly
professional job, need proper attention.
Select small, full sunny area or wide shallow
containers for raising nursery plants. Fill with
seed raising soil mixture, available in market.
Get the soil well moist but not wet for sowing.
I strongly advise line sowing by placing seeds
half to one cms deep with nicely covering with
sand or a thin layer of fine soil.
Direct sowing and transplanting
The beds have to be cleaned from all left over
of previous crops, followed by light irrigation.
Add 4 to 5 kg well rotten good quality of
compost. Deep hoeing and levelling should
be followed to mix up compost thoroughly.
The beds are now ready for sowing and
transplanting. You always follow lines or rows
for sowing and transplanting to facilitate your
day to day operations like weeding, hoeing,
thinning, top dressing and even picking or
harvesting.
Line to line and plant to plant distances
vary from crop to crop, depending upon size
and root zones of plants. The idea is to allow
their uninterrupted growth without competing
each other. Line to line distances are almost
same, 30-40 cm in all direct sown vegetables
like spinach, bok choi, fenugreek, mustered,
radish, coriander, beet root, onion and garlic
and plant to plant distances may be around 10
cm which can be maintained after germination
and subsequent thinnings. In potato, line to
line distances, of course may be 50-60 cms and
plant to plant may be 15- 20 cms. Similarly
transplanted vegetables like cauliflowers,
cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprout need 50-60
cms line to line and 40 cms from plant to plant
distance.
Plant Protection
From initial stage to late stage of plant
growth some insect and diseases are common.
They are both sucking type like white fly,
aphids and chewing type like slugs, snails,
caterpillars and beetles are main insects.
Diseases like powdery, downy mildews and
blights are common in winter vegetables. They
are fungal diseases. In all cases don’t wait for
them to occur but take preventive measures at
the initial stage of plant growth and not to allow
them to invade by using suitable pesticides.

3 where it’s just about one person or two people or Bhoomi for
that matter... I have done lots of those and I have also not shied
away from films which are multi-starrers because for me a film
is all about the director and the team that makes a film and about
the script and character I am playing.” Aditi says she is inspired

“And I completely surrender to the director’s vision and I am
like putty in their hands and they mould me. So, that’s the
way I work and I like to be challenged,” she added. 
Aditi has also worked in the south Indian film industry.
She was seen in Prajapathi, Sringaram and Kaatru
Veliyidai. Talking about working in the south Indian film
industry, she said: “Films are about feelings... Feelings
don’t have a language... they are universal. So, I consider
myself blessed that pan-Indian audiences are watching
my films and I am being given these opportunities to work
with some of the greatest directors of our country.”

all the opportunities as an “actor who does not have any
backing and who has come into the industry just because I
love being in front of the camera”.

Wear old clothes as the colour may not wash

mind getting stained.  Bring cash to buy colour

Parking is limited so plan your trip before the

World Kidney Day – Know your kidney health

Did you know kidney disease affects 10 per cent of adults worldwide? Around
280,000 New Zealanders are living with Chronic Kidney Disease.
On Thursday 8 March, our Haemodialysis Unit and Renal teams are marking
World Kidney Day and raising awareness around kidney health with an
information and screening stand in the level 5 atrium, Auckland City Hospital
from 9am until 4pm.
This year, World Kidney Day coincides with International Women’s Day, giving
us the opportunity to highlight the importance of kidney health for women.
Chronic Kidney Disease is slightly more likely to develop in women compared
with men, with almost 200 million women affected globally. Women who
have Chronic Kidney Disease during pregnancy are at increased risk for
negative health outcomes for both mum and baby.
Education and early detection are key in preventing kidney disease. Come
along to meet the team, and expand your knowledge about kidneys. You can
also get a free basic kidney health screening while on your break, or between
meetings.
