As Wesleyan Christians we believe that God calls us to
both holiness of heart (attitudes) and holiness of life
(actions). The Lenten Journey 2018 handout that we made
available a few weeks ago focuses on the holiness of life
aspect by suggesting actions and disciplines that we can
practically engage each day of the week. Let me suggest
that we also focus on our inner attitudes (holiness of
heart) as an essential part of our preparation for Easter
this year.
Or to put it another way, if you are going to “give up”
or “take up” something for Lent, consider following
the teaching of Paul and the example of Jesus found in
Ephesians 4:31-5:2. This passage clearly outlines some
attitudes of the heart that need to be discarded and given
up, as well as some that must be taken up and embraced.
“Put away from you all bitterness and anger and
wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and
be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one
another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore, be
imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love,
as Christ gave himself for us, a fragrant offering and
sacrifice to God.”

Help Feed a Choir?
We are hosting the 55-member choir from Central
Methodist University for a meal before their concert at
MUMC on Thursday, March 15. If you can help with the
meal, please contact Tim Coday at tim@moumc.org.
March 11: Dessert with the Pastor
We are sorry that weather and health issues have
prevented us from hosting the Dessert With the Pastor
event. It has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 11
at 1:30pm in Whittler Hall. Welcome Sunday has been
rescheduled for March 18.
Easter Lily Dedications
One of the special ways members of our church family
can enjoy the spirit and beauty of the Easter season is to
purchase a lily in honor or memory of a loved one. If you
would like to dedicate a lily to be used in our sanctuary
and chapel on Easter Sunday, please complete the forms
available in the kiosks and in the office. A special bulletin
with a list of those being honored or remembered will be
available on Easter morning.
Hospital Calls/Pastoral Visits
Hospitals do not inform churches/pastors when a
parishioner is admitted. That practice was discontinued
as a consequence of HIPAA legislation. Therefore, we ask
that you alert the church office when you are admitted to
a hospital, when you will have a scheduled hospital stay or
when you would like to receive a pastoral visit. The same
would hold true when you learn of someone else in our
church family experiencing health and/or life challenges.
Your pastoral staff wants to walk with you and remind you
of God’s love and grace at such times. Someone is available
throughout the week to make hospital calls and pastoral
visits. After hours, you can email or leave a voice mail at
443-3111 that we can pick up the next work weekday.

Lenten Check-In
We’re half way through our time of fasting. How is it going?
I’m not fasting.
Of course, this is your choice. And it’s still not too late to decide to add
something to your life or take something away. Consider starting this
week.
I started but I screwed up.
Fasting is a practice. There is no failure. Give yourself grace and start
again. You might ask yourself what you believe about second chances
or mistakes. How can you treat yourself with compassion in light of
what you deem failure? What other lessons can you learn from this
experience?
I’ve been fasting this whole time.
What new insights have you gleaned? What do you think about
permanently living with or without what you’ve offered during the fast?
How do you feel about your commitment? About your relationship with
Christ?
Wherever you are in the journey, there are lessons and insights. Take
time this week to check in: what are you thinking, feeling, and doing.

While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing
it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my
body.” Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them,
saying, “Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant,

I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I
