Single Shard ITU English Lesson Plans

M Standard(s):
English Content Standard: Identify and analyze features of themes conveyed through
characters’ actions and images.
ELD 6. Reading/viewing closely a) Explain ideas, phenomena, processes, and text
relationships (e.g., compare/contrast, cause/effect, problem/solution) based on close reading
of a variety of grade‐ level texts and viewing of multimedia with moderate support.
Objective(s):
Students will be able to discuss in groups the main events of chapters 1-3, after reading and
annotating the chapters as a class.
Assessment(s)
Summative: Mini Book Report
Instruction:
Anticipatory set: Students will watch book trailer for “A Single Shard.”
Instruction: Teacher will review correct annotation method.
Guided Practice: As a class read and annotate chapter 1.
Independent Practice: Students will individually read and annotate chapters 2 and 3. In
groups students will discuss the main events of chapters 2 and 3.
Closure: Homework-Read Chapters 4-6.
Special Considerations: Teacher will make sure to give an annotation guide to english
learners and students with special ed.

Students will be able to fill out graphic organizers about Similes, Metaphors, and Symbolism,
after taking notes on a powerpoint discussing those literary elements.
Assessment(s)
Summative-Mini Book Report
Instruction:
Anticipatory set: Quiz on Chapter 4-6
Instruction: Students will discuss the main events in chapters 4-6 in their groups. Teacher
will lead class in a mini lecture about metaphors, similes, and symbolism, while students are
taking notes.
Independent Practice: Students will fill out a graphic organizer focusing on the metaphors,
similes, and symbols within the book “A Single Shard.”
Closure: Homework- Read and annotate chapters 7-9
Special Considerations:Teacher will make sure to check in with english learners and special
ed students while they are filling out the graphic organizer.

Students will be able to participate in a class discussion of the main events of chapters 7-9,
after creating a map of Tree Ears journey to Song Do.
Assessment(s)
Summative- Mini Book Report
Instruction:
Anticipatory set: Quiz on chapters 7-9
Instruction: Teacher will discuss the main events of Tree Ears journey and explain that they
are to pair up in partners and create a map demonstrating his journey and the events that
occurred.
Independent Practice: Students will pair up in twos and create a map of Tree Ears Journey.
Closure: Homework- read and annotate chapters 10-12.
Special Considerations: Teacher will be sure that the students pair up in groups that’ll
support all students including EL’s and Special Ed students.

Students will be able to finish their maps and begin working on their mini book reports, after a
map gallery walk and Mini Book Report instructions.

Summative- Mini Book Report
Instruction:
Anticipatory set: Quiz on chapters 10-12
Instruction: Teacher goes over instruction for mini book report assignment.
Guided Practice: Students will do a Gallery walk of each other’s Journey Maps.
Independent Practice: Students finish Tree Ear’s Journey map.
Closure: Homework- read and annotate chapter 13 and work on mini book report
assignment.
Special Considerations: Teacher will make sure to check in with students after instructions for
the book report are given aloud.
F Standard(s):

Students will be able to finish their Mini Book Reports, after finishing the book “A Single
Shard.”
Assessment(s)
Summative- Mini Book Report
Instruction:
Anticipatory set: Quiz on chapter 13
Independent Practice: Students will continue to work on and finish up their mini book reports.
Closure: Mini Book Reports due at the end of class.
Special Considerations: Teachers will make sure extensions are given if needed for the book
reports.
