The European transportation network, which is composed of highways and railways, has
more than one million bridges that are continuously deteriorating due to aging and traffic
load. However, the health state of these bridges is usually assessed by time-consuming,
expensive and subjective visual inspection techniques. Bridge-owners are calling for
condition monitoring methods that are able to accurately and continuously assess the
health state of bridges, in order to adequately schedule maintenance activities and
minimizing the whole life cost of the bridge. In this talk, we discuss Structural Health
Monitoring (SHM) methods, such as Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) and data-mining
techniques that are able to monitor the health state of bridges automatically, remotely and
rapidly, allowing prompt detection of ongoing degradation of the bridge elements.
Directions to University Park Campus (main
university campus)
Leave the M1 motorway at Junction 25 to join the
A52 to Nottingham. Follow the A52 for
approximately 4 miles, at the Toby Carvery
roundabout turn right onto the A6464, straight over
the next roundabout (turning left takes you through
the University's West Entrance) and then left on to the
A6005 University Boulevard. The Universities South
Entrance is about a mile on the left.

Use postcode NG7 2JN for the South Entrance (East

Drive) in satellite navigation systems.

There is no right turn into the South Entrance. The

options are to go along the A52 towards Derby along
the north side of the campus and turn left at the Toby
Carvery roundabout, then follow the instruction
above. Alternatively there is a small turning (Coates
Road) on the northbound carriageway of the A52
Clifton Boulevard just after the footbridge by the
Queens Medical Centre or the North Entrance just
after the junction where the A52 heads to Derby.

Once on campus take Science Road and turn left into ...................
the Building 35 precinct (just before Science Road
becomes one way). There is parking outside or
nearby Building 35.
