Primary Responsibilities
Checking the status and operations of SAS servers and processes, including starting, stopping,
and/or pausing the servers / processes used in the SAS system
Managing metadata repositories
Scheduling regular backups of the Metadata Server and physical files
Monitoring, logging, and/or troubleshooting SAS servers and processes, including error
messages and using system logs or setting logging options as well as options within SAS
Management Console (SMC), and SAS Environment Manager.
Troubleshooting SAS server issues, such as system access and password problems
Understanding SAS installation/configuration directory structures, where to find things related to
servers, configurations, content, etc.
Administering the scheduling of jobs and reports
Using SMC to administer metadata and adding new libraries to the Metadata Server
Via SMC, controlling user access to various parts of the SAS system, granting permissions to
read, write, create or view reports and data within the system – ensure that Users see only the
information that they are authorized to access. Create and configure libraries and permissions for
Users and groups of Users, and assign logins. Design, implement, and maintain the security
framework, including securing data at the library, dataset and column level and leveraging ACT’s
and ACE’s as applicable (with access rights and privileges, user roles / groups, etc.)
In a logical, scientific manner, troubleshooting SAS-related performance issues by working with
systems administrators, network administrators, web application server administrators, database
administrators and/or storage administrators
Understanding the concept of SAS repositories, what they are, why they are used and how to
create/maintain them
Understanding how SAS interacts with third party software such as databases, web application
servers, etc.
Assisting with problems pertaining to accessing the SAS server(s) or data (e.g., the ability to help
manage the connection of SAS to MS SQL Server, via SAS/ACCESS to MS SQL SRV or similar
approach)
Monitoring for availability and then installing updates to SAS software (patches / maintenance
releases / hot fixes, etc.)
Monitoring and logging SAS servers and spawners, and then optimizing memory usage or tuning
servers for optimal performance
Configuring relevant processes for load balancing and pooling when and where appropriate
Applying utilization, configuration and promotion of DEV, TEST and PROD environments
Working with the systems administrator to secure server resources and file systems to ensure
SAS objects having a server component are secure via the operating system
Assisting users with SAS code from an administration perspective (e.g., helping issue OS level
commands from within SAS programs)
Providing knowledge transfer, mentoring and expert advice to the program on the efficient
administration of the SAS system
Keeping records of and documenting the entire SAS environment, including detailed records of
problems that have occurred and the associated resolutions
Interfacing with SAS Technical Support
Possessing the ability to work with little direct supervision; maintaining excellent troubleshooting
skills; being imaginative, inquisitive, with a self motivating personality and a strong work ethic;
and having a customer focused demeanor
Having good oral and written communication skills with the ability to coordinate efforts within a
diverse group of people towards a common goal.
Leading and/or actively participating in SAS knowledge-sharing activities.
Ability to perform on-call support within various blocks of hours providing escalations and
notifications of problems.

Professional Skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to lead meetings and conference calls
required.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and as a
team member are a must.
Ability to demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions
is a must.
