d. angle
Question (2): [25 Marks]
1. What is the need of calibration?

2. Classify the comparator according to the principles used for obtaining

magnification with examples.
3. A thermocouple behaves approximately as a first-order system. The element is
initially at a temperature of 45˚C and suddenly subjected to a temperature of
100˚C. After a period of 6 s the thermocouple indicates a temperature of 70˚C.
Calculate the 90 percent rise time for the thermocouple.
Question (4): [20 Marks]
1. Explain how the component shown in fig. is checked for its dimensional and
form accuracy. Justify the selection of instruments after considering various
alternative possible. (all dimensions in mm)

2. The stress in mild steel flat circular diaphragm is given by

3D 2 p
S
16t 2
where D = diameter of the diaphragm, m
t = thickness of the diaphragm walls, m
p = pressure applied, N/m2
and diaphragm has a diameter of 15 mm (±0.7 %), and a thickness of 0.2 mm.
(±3%) the pressure applied is 800×103 N/m2 (±1 %).
Calculate the value of the stress, its uncertainty and percentage uncertainty.

Question (4): [20 Marks]

1. Explain with drawing how the sine bar can used to measure unknown angle? and
explain why sine bars are not suitable for measuring angles above 45 degrees.
2. Shafts of 75± 0.02 mm diameter are to be checked by the help of a Go, Not Go
snap gauges. Design the gauge, sketch it and show its Go size and Not Go size
dimensions. Assume normal wear allowance and gauge maker’s tolerance.
