State Board of Education ruling on ECA eligibility

New Haven schools were notified that students enrolled in magnet schools are not
eligible for Educational Center for the Arts (ECA). Although the decision was
apparently made on Feb. 14, families are learning only now. The decision saves no
money this year, but the timing may leave students stranded. Our office is not aware
whether the matter has been discussed by New Haven’s Board of Education.
Students already enrolled can continue to graduation.

Whalley billboard update

In response to my request for a work stop order, the state Department of
Transportation has contacted the owner of the billboard/ poster at Whalley and
Emerson to inform him that pursuant to section 21-50 of the statutes, no person,
firm, or corporation shall erect an outdoor advertising structure until a permit has
been obtained from the department, and is subject to fines. We will let you know of
further developments.

Rally for Families from Puerto Rico

I joined neighbors and legislators to advocate for coordinated aid to families arriving
from Puerto Rico. As American citizens, families are eligible for Medicaid, but I am
concerned about the effect on children of the trauma of the storm and lack of water
and food. In addition New Haven, with unexpected new students, needs adequate
state funds. About 1800 displaced students are in Connecticut schools.
