TOPIC FOR SBE UISC 2016
Please pick 3 of 6 topics given below as the general topic for 2017 programme. A short
description has been given for each topic for better understanding.

A. Bioenergy
Bioenergy is energy derived from the conversion of biomass (any
organic/decomposable matter derived from plants or animals available on a renewable
basis). Biomass ranges from well-known wood and agricultural crops to unconventional
ones such as manure and may be used directly as fuel, or processed into liquids and gases.
Issues related to this topic may include optimizing the production of biofuels, biochar, and
biodiesels, improving the quality of the feedstock substrate used in biorefinery, and also
improve the efficiency of microbial fuel cells (MCF) for economical use.
B. Biomedical & Pharmaceutical Engineering
Biomedical engineering seeks to improve human health through cross-disciplinary
activities that integrate the sciences of engineering with the sciences of biomedical.
Biomedical engineering combines the design and problem solving skills of engineering with
medical and biological sciences to advance health care treatment,
including diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy. On the other hand, pharmaceutical
engineering deals with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of materials
necessary for converting raw materials into marketable pharmaceutical products. Issues
related to this topic may include 3D printing of human organs and cells, stem Cells, Zika
testing, anesthesia machine, drug delivery (nanodiamonds for cancer drug delivery),
herbal medicine and cosmetics, distribution and elimination for the benefit of improving
product efficacy and safety, as well as patient convenience and compliance and more.
C. Bioprocessing
Bioprocessing can be defined as the conversion of biological material (cells,
organelles, enzymes, organisms) for producing commercial, medical or scientific result
products via biological process. Upstream process as the first part of bioprocessing is the
preparation step of the cell, which begins with cell isolation, cultivation, unto the collection
of the life cell batch. While the downstream part of a bioprocess refers to the part where
the cell mass from the upstream are processed to meet purity and quality requirements.
Issues related to this topic would discuss the bioprocess of the products and services that
it as such:
 Specialty products and industrial chemicals. Antibiotics, value-added food and
agricultural products, and fuels, chemicals, and fiber from renewable resources such
as microalgaes.
 Environmental-management aids. Bioprocessing products and services used to control
or remediate toxic waste, for example biopesticides, bioremediation, microbial-
enhanced oil recovery.
D. Industrial Biotechnology
Industrial biotechnology is the application of biotechnology for industrial purposes
including manufacturing, alternative energy, and bio-based materials. It is a set of practices
that use living cells (such as bacteria, yeast, algae) or component of cells like enzymes, to
generate industrial products and processes (e.g. to prevent pollution, conserve resources,
and reduce costs). Issues that may be discussed in this topic are as below:
▪ Chemicals and enzyme. Modify and develop new industrial processes, such as by using
enzymes to reduce the amount of harsh chemicals for example Languard is an enzyme-
based product that can rapidly degrade pesticide residues.
▪ Reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing; for example by treating industrial
wastewater onsite using biological mediums such as microbes.

E. Biomaterials
Biomaterials are any matter, surface, or construct that interacts with biological
systems. It can be any material, natural or synthetic, that comprises whole or part of a
living structure or a biomedical device which performs, augments, or replaces natural
function. This science encompasses elements of medicine, biology, chemistry, tissue
engineering and materials science. These sciences include polymer synthesis and
characterization, drug and gene vector design, the biology of the host response,
immunology and toxicology and self-assembly at the nanoscale. Some issues of this topic
that would be discussed are medical implants organs, contact lenses, drug delivery
system, and scaffolding for tissue regeneration.

F. Food, Science, & Technology

Food Science & Technology draws from many disciplines such as biology, chemical
engineering, and biochemistry in an attempt to better understand food processes and
ultimately improve food products for the general public. Developing safe, nutritious foods
is made possible by studying and applying the physical, microbiological, and chemical
makeup of food. Issues that may be discussed in this topic would include fermented food
stuff, GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) crops, food safety, nutraceutical science,
molecular gastronomy, and so on.
