Field Laboratory 1 - Administration Page

Scope Statement
Field laboratories are designed to give participants an opportunity to observe and
perform under conditions that more closely approximate the real-world environment. In
this module, participants will view a variety of improvised explosives and handle
explosive components where safety guidelines permit. In addition, they will witness the
detonation of IEDs in several sizes and observe the dangers and destructive power of
these materials.
Terminal Learning Objectives (TLO)
At the conclusion of this field laboratory, participants will be able to recognize various
military and commercial explosives and their effects, and differentiate between high and
low explosives.
Enabling Learning Objectives (ELO)
F1-1 Recognize explosives that could be encountered by first responders during a
bombing incident.
F1-2 Differentiate the effects of high and low explosives detonations.
F1-3 Identify the effects of detonating common military and commercial
explosives.
F1-4 Recognize initiation systems, blasting caps, blasting machines and other
methods used to initiate explosives or energetic materials.
Resources
• IRTB Course Handouts, including course evaluation forms, pre-test forms,
registration forms, self-evaluation forms, and travel reimbursement forms (one
per participant).
• Pencil or pen, protective glasses, badge, and nameplate (one per participant).
• Flash drive containing Participant Guide, Video Library, Case Study Library,
Additional Resources, and Presentation Materials for awareness-level trainings
(one per participant).
• Digital projectors, flip-chart, and whiteboard.
