SUBJECT: Discovery Class Changes

As we approach the end of the first quarter, it is time for us to look at the current structure of our
Discovery Class. To help support our School Improvement Plan and the reading focus that was decided
upon, we will begin utilizing Reading Plus for select students. This is a program supported by the district
to help students increase their silent reading skills. We are fortunate enough to have 120 slots for our
students. We have selected 40 students form each grade level based off of EOG data from last year as
well as teacher input. With the start of this, there will be some changes regarding Discovery. With the
exception of the meeting Wednesday, these changes will not take place until next week.

 Mrs. Hinton will be meeting with the students Wednesday 10/25 during Discovery. Please send
students to the auditorium after announcements.
 The teachers hosting these groups are: (Their discovery groups have been dispersed and that
information will be sent to the effected teachers)
o Coach Smith: 6th grade computer lab
o Mr. Smith: classroom
o Mr. Symes: classroom
o Ms. Cook: library
 Students will remain with their original Discovery class for Circles and Physical Activity Day (i.e.
Coach Smith will have her original discovery group; Mr. Smith will have his original discovery
group, etc.)
 Circles will now need to be held on the following days. Please make sure to have the circles on
these days so all students can participate.
o 6th Grade: Wednesday
o 7th Grade: Tuesday
o 8th Grade: Tuesday
 PA Day will remain the same
o 6th Grade: Friday
o 7th Grade: Wednesday
o 8th Grade: Thursday
 Students will be taking the initial assessment 10/30 during Discovery. Please share with your
students on Friday 10/27 where they should report Monday.

The above information should address all upcoming changes but if you have any questions or concerns
