Homework 4 – Determination of the dynamic characteristics of a reinforced concrete floor

Cristian Antonio Andrei

Determination of the dynamic characteristics
of a reinforced concrete floor

For the reinforced concrete floor from the laboratory of

Strength of materials there were determined the
dynamic characteristics. Determination of the dynamic
characteristics of structures was done in order to avoid
the discomfort/unpleasantness resulted from the
structural response at the human activities.

On the floor there were mounted 3 capacitive

accelerometers which have measured the vibrations.
For this experiment the floor was subjected to an impact
load (a person which jump on the floor). There were
obtained three sets of data (one for each accelerometer).
The time-series data were processed using
SeismoSignal software and were obtained the following
results:

Accelerations recorded by the three accelerometers

By manual processing the data in Excel, it was

obtained the logarithmic decrement 0.38007 and a
damping ratio equal to 4.45%. The fundamental
period was obtained as being equal to 0.047s with
the corresponding predominant frequency of
21.27 Hz, in comparison with 0.082s and 12.06 Hz.

The maximum recorded floor acceleration was

0.789 (using cubic baseline correction and
Butterworth filter), recorded by the third
accelerometer. The reinforced concrete floor meet
the comfort criteria, having an acceleration close
to Offices/Residences acceleration requirement.
By manual processing it was obtained a maximum
acceleration of 0.84806 m/s2.
