ABSTRACT
Six stroke engine the name itself indicates a cycle of six stroke out of which two are useful power
stroke .The six stoke engine with internal and external combustion double flow is similar to the actual internal
reciprocating combustion engine. In addition to the two valve in four stroke engine two more valve are
incorporated which are operated by a piston arrangement .The six stroke engine thermodynamically more
efficient because the change in volume of the power stroke is greater than the intake stroke and compression
stroke. In six stroke engine the fuel consumption is reduced 40% in two power stroke in six stroke cycle,
dramatic reduction in pollution, adaptability to multi fuel operation.

KEYWORDS : Six stroke Engine, camshaft, crankshaft, cam follower

I.INTRODUCTION
A six stroke engine consist of six stroke in compression with the 4 strokes of 4-strokes internal
combustion engines. This engine consist of similar components as that of the conventional four stroke engine
with addition of two more valves the six stroke engine has the same basic mechanism of transmitting power as
the traditional internal combustion engine i.e by reciprocating motion of the piston which is converted into the
rotary motion of the crankshaft. The 6- stroke engine are mostly preferred in heavy vehicles were prime focus is
on load carrying capacity rather than fuel economy. Its consist of 6- stroke which are due to radicals
hybridization of two strokes and four stroke engine i.e the piston in each stroke goes up and down six times for
the injection of fuel. The six stroke engine consist of two chambers having internal combustion and external
combustion were in, unused or west heat from the four stroke Otto cycle is then used to carry out further two
strokes this two additional stokes increases the work extracted per unit input of energy.

II.WORKING OF SIX STROKE ENGINE

The six stroke cycle of six stroke engine are as follows.

A). Intake stroke

B). Compression stroke

C). Ignition Stroke

D). Recompression stroke

E). Steam expansion Stroke

F). Exhaust stroke

In a general six stroke engine, the first four strokes are similar to those in 4-stroke Otto cycle
engine. In the first stroke i.e the intake stroke, air fuel mixture by the carburetor is supplied to the intake valve
where the exhaust valve is closed and piston is said to move from (Top dead centre) TDC to BDC (Bottom
Dead centre). The second stroke is of compression, were as the intake as well as exhaust valve is closed, consist
of compression of the air fuel mixture and piston moves from BDC to TDC. In the third stroke Ignition take
place as as park plug is use to ignite the compressed mixture and their by begins the second revolution wherein
the piston against moves from TDC to BDC .In fourth stroke the burnt gases are led out from the cylinder
through exhaust valve and reed valve which then completes the second revolution and fourth stroke as the
piston moves from BDC to TDC.

The differentiating points are the latest two stroke i.e the 5th and 6th stroke , The 5th strokes initiate
the power strokes. Wherein instead of air-fuel mixture only air is sucked into the cylinder from the air filter
through the secondary air induction line and the piston moves from TDC to BDC. In the sixth stroke, the
exhaust air from the cylinder is led to the atmosphere by the exhaust valve.

II.ENGINE MODIFICATION
To make a conventional six stroke engine, a few modifications can be done so that it can be easily run. Below
the cylinder head gasket, everything is conventional, so one advantage is that this modification can be
transferred in the existing engines without changing the bottom end.

A). Crankshaft

In four stroke engine, the crankshaft rotates about 720 degree while the camshaft rotates 360
degree to complete one cycle. But in six stroke engine the crankshaft must rotate 1080 degree to rotate the
camshaft 360 degree to complete one cycle. Thus the gear ratio of six stroke will be 3:1 instead 2:1 which is of
four stroke engine.
The teeth of gear in crankshaft will be 18 and in camshaft the gear teeth will be 54.The gear used in
this is helical type gear which gives high speed and high speed rotation.

B). Camshaft
When camshaft rotates 360 degree in six stroke engine, the cam has been divided into 60 degree
among the six-strokes. There are two exhaust stroke , one will be at the time of fourth stroke through which hot
gases or burnt gases are left out and the second one is at the six stroke which pushes the steam out

C).Cam follower
The bottom of the shape of regular follower has the flat pattern, which is suitable with normal
camshaft for four stroke engine. When reducing the duration of valve opening from 9000 to only 6000 shape of
the follower must be changed from flat to roller or spherical shape.

IV. ADVANTAGES OF SIX STROKE ENGINE

A). Torque is increased by 35% in six stroke engine.

B). In six stroke engine the change in volume during the compression stroke is slightly higher than four stroke
engine after the port are closed.

C). Lower engine temperature so no need of extra cooling system.

D). Reduction of chemical, noise and thermal pollution.

C). Direct injection and optimal fuel combustion at every engine speed.

V.DISADVANTAGE OF SIX STROKE ENGINE

A). Engine size increases due to many Number of cylinder and additional component.

B). High initial cost due to change in gear structure.

C). High manufacturing cost in six stroke engine.

VI.CONCLUSION
Today we are facing a huge energy crisis. For combating this situation, modern engineering technology
and energy conservation techniques needs to be implemented. The six stroke engine along with the proposed
alternative fuel is the key. The six stroke engine gives more power strokes per revolution, reduces cooling
demands, 35% increase in torque, 40% fuel consumption and 60% to 90% reduction in polluting emission,
depending on the type of fuel being used
