Demo 1: Sizing with BTP Data

Purpose: This demo covers the use of VMAX Sizer to design a new
VMAX3 array with BTP/BIN Data from an older VMAX 20K
array. Sizing with Default Constraints.

Create Project and upload BTP and BIN files.


Tasks:
Create Scenario and add workload.

Review workloads for SLO and Replication.

Size Scenario, review recommended configurations and


reports.

Export Configuration XML and Sizer Report.

Please note, this guide provides high-level instructions to


accomplish specific objectives. For explicit details on how to
perform the lower-level tasks, refer to the lecture material
and demonstration videos. This applies to all the demos in
this guide.

Demo 1: Part 1 – Create Project and Upload BTP/BIN Files

Step Action

1 Use a supported browser to login to VMAX Sizer.

https://vmaxsizer.emc.com

2 Explore the VMAX Sizer user interface.

3 Create a New Project:

Hint: Home  New Project

e.g.

Name: VMAX3SD BTP Demo

Description: Sizing with BTP

Customer: EMC Education Services

4 Upload BTP and BIN files

Hint: Projects  Project Name  Uploaded Files Tab Upload Files

Locate and upload the following files

T1_20110920_120004_000192604253.bin

T1_20110920_120004_000192604253.btp

Process may take a few minutes.

5 View the details of the uploaded BTP file.

Hint: Click on the uploaded BTP file to see the Workload details.

Pay attention to the workload names to see if any workload is currently being
replicated.

Demo 1: Part 2 – Create Scenario, Add and Review Workloads

Step Action

1 Create a new Sizing Scenario

Hint: Projects  Project Name Scenarios Tab  Create Scenario

e.g.

Name: Scenario 1 Default Constraints

Description: Initial sizing with default constraints

2 Add Workload to Scenario – Choose from Uploaded Files

Hint: Click View Files on the Workload page of your scenario

Select the BTP file that was uploaded earlier.

3 Observe the Workload – Graph View

Note the Engine Cabinet and D@RE Settings

Hover over the various colored circles to see details of each workload.

4 Toggle to the Workload – Table View

Hint: Click on Table View icon ( ) at the top right of the page.

5 Review the tabular listing of the workloads.

For each workload look at the Capacity, IOPS, Skew, SLO, Remote Replication,
Snap, Clone etc.

Are any of the workloads being:

Remotely replicated? _____________

Replicates with Snap? _____________

Make a note of the Total Capacity _______________and IOPS ____________.

Step Action

6 Change the SLO and add Snap to the workloads that are being replicated with
SRDF/Asynchronous.

Set the SLO to Platinum OLTP.

Check the Snap box.

Set the number of Mounted Snaps to 2.

Set the Change Rate to 30%.

Make a note of the Total Capacity _______________ and IOPS ____________.

Has this changed from what we saw earlier? ___________________

Demo 1: Part 3 – Size Scenario, View Reports, Export Configuration XML

Step Action

1 Size Scenario
Hint: Click Size Scenario on the Workload page

2 View recommended configurations:

Hint: Click on your Scenario in the Activity page after the sizing has completed.

Observe the details of both configurations.

Record the information for Config 1

3 View Reports for Config 1

Hint: Click the ellipsis (…) icon and choose View Reports.

Go back to the Configuration Options page by clicking on Back.

4 Export Configuration XML for Config 1

Hint: Click the ellipsis (…) icon and choose Export as XML.

XML will be e-mailed to the Sizer user.

5 Export Sizer Report

Hint: Click the Sizer Report icon ( ) at the top right of the page.

Sizer Report PPTx and CSV file will be e-mailed to the Sizer user.

Demo 2: Modifying an Existing Sizer Scenario

Purpose: This demo covers copying an existing Sizer scenario and


making modifications. The modified scenario is sized and
what it analysis is performed.

Make a copy of an existing Sizer scenario.


Tasks:
Modify constraints –Include SRDF-GigE ports.

Modify workloads – Add replication for more workloads and


account for capacity and IOPS growth.

Size Scenario and perform What If Analysis on one of the


recommended configurations.

Export Configuration XML.

Demo 2: Part 1 – Copy Scenario and Make Modifications

Step Action

1 Login to VMAX Sizer

2 Navigate to the Scenarios tab of the project created in the previous


demonstration.

e.g. Project Name: VMAX3SD BTP Demo

At least one Scenario should be listed.

e.g. Scenario 1 Default Constraints

3 Make a copy of the previously created scenario.

Hint: Hover over the ellipsis (…) icon and then click on the Copy icon ( ).

The action will automatically make a copy and navigate to the Workload – Graph
View of the copied scenario.

The default name of the copied scenario is the original name appended with the
word “Copy”.

4 Toggle to the Workload – Table View of the copied scenario.

5 Modify the constraints by including SRDF-GigE ports.

Hint: Click Define Constraints. Expand Ports. Check SRDF-GigE.

Explore the other constraints that can be set.

Go back to the Workload – Table View.

6 Identify two workloads without any replication.

Add Asynchronous and Snap replication for these workloads. Set the number of
Mounted Snaps to 2.

7 Add 30% Capacity and IOPS Growth.

Hint: Click the ellipsis (…) icon and choose What if Analysis. Set IOPS Growth % to
20. Click What If.

Demo 3: Sizing with Mitrend Data

Purpose: This demo covers the use of VMAX Sizer to size a new VMAX3
array with Mitrend data from multiple VNX arrays

Create Project and upload Mitrend summary XML file.


Tasks:
Create Scenario and add workload.

Modify workloads - Delete certain workloads, set SLO to


Optimized for rest of the workloads and set Snap for some
workloads.

Size Scenario, review recommended configurations and


reports.

Export Configuration XML.

Demo 3: Part 1 – Create Project and Upload Mitrend Summary XML

Step Action

1 Login to VMAX Sizer.

2 Create a New Project:

e.g.

Name: VMAX3SD Mitrend Demo

Description: Sizing with Mitrend data

Customer: EMC Education Services

3 Upload the Mitrend summary XML file

Locate and upload the following file

VNX_Performance_DataSummary_Mitrend.xml

Process may take a few minutes.

4 View the details of the uploaded Mitrend XML file.

Hint: Click on the uploaded Mitrend XML file to see the Workload details.

Pay attention to the workload names and identify once with the word “VPLEX”.
The VPLEX workloads will not be part of the new VMAX3.

Also note that there are a number of workloads with less than 10 IOPS. These
workloads will not be part of the new VMAX3 either.

Demo 3: Part 2 – Create Scenario, Add and Modify Workloads

Step Action

1 Create a new Sizing Scenario

e.g.

Name: VNX Consolidation

Description: Four VNX arrays to one VMAX3 - Mitrend Data

2 Add Workload to Scenario – Choose from Uploaded Files

Select the Mitrend XML file that was uploaded earlier.

3 Observe the Workload – Graph View

Note the Engine Cabinet and D@RE Settings

Hover over the various colored circles to see details of each workload. Note that
a number of workloads are near 0 IOPS.

4 Toggle to the Workload – Table View and review the workloads.

Filter the list to see only the workloads with “vplex” in the name.

Select and delete these workloads.

Hint: Click on the box in front of each of the “vplex” workloads and then click on

the Delete icon ( ).

The view will switch back to the Workload Graph View.

5 Toggle to the Workload – Table View again.

Sort the workloads by IOPS and then select and delete all the workloads with
less than 10 IOPS.

The view will switch back to the Workload Graph View

6 Toggle to the Workload – Table View again.

Sort by IOPS and enable Snap with 2 Mounted Snaps for the top 6 workloads.

Select all workloads and set the SLO to Optimized.

Set the Total Capacity Growth % and IOPS Growth % to 30.

Demo 4: Sizing for eNAS

Purpose: This demo covers the use of Sizer to size a new VMAX3 array
with block and eNAS workloads. We will show the addition of
an eNAS instance and the addition of Custom/Template block
workloads when real customer data is unavailable.

Create Project and Scenario.

3 Create a new Sizing Scenario

e.g.

Name: eNAS Scenario

Description: eNAS file plus Custom/Template block

4 Expected workload on new array

File storage – 200 TiB, 20000 IOPS

OLTP Applications – 100 TiB, 20000 IOPS

DSS Applications – 100 TiB, 10000 IOPS

Proprietary Applications – 50 TiB, 10000 IOPS

Model 20% capacity and IOPS growth

Also requires Dual Engine Configuration and D@RE

5 Add workload to the scenario starting with the eNAS instance.

Hint: Add eNAS Instance on the Workload page.

eNAS Properties: Total Data Mover Capacity 200 TiB, use defaults for the rest.

Workload Details: Workload Type – Typical, Utilization Pattern – Block-File


Balanced, 20000 IOPS

View will switch to the Workload – Graph View

6 Observe the Workload – Graph View

Enable Dual Engine Cabinet and D@RE.

7 Add Template Workloads

Hint: Click on Add Workload and Choose from Templates

Add the OLTP and DSS workloads

OLTP – 102400 GiB, 20000 IOPS

DSS – 102400 GiB, 10000 IOPS

8 Add Custom workload

Hint: Click on Add Workload and Create Custom Workload

General Tab: Custom, Name – MyCustom, 51200 GiB, 10000 IOPS, 90/10 Skew

Workload Mix Tab: Set all block sizes to 8 KB, Read Hit 35%, Read Miss 25%,
Write Hit 25%, and Write Miss 15%.

9 Toggle to Workload – Table View

Workloads can be edited here if necessary.

Locate and upload the following file

4 Create a Upgrade Scenario

e.g.

Description: Upgrade – No license file

Note: In this demo the license file was not available.

The view will switch to the Configuration Option page with the current
configuration shown.

5 Examine the current configuration.

Demo 5: Part 2 – Upgrade Configuration

Step Action

1 Launch the Upgrade Configuration dialog.

Hint: Click the ellipsis (…) icon and choose Upgrade Config

2 Drive Tab:

Examine the Available Drive Slots.

Increase the number of Flash Drives by 24.

The number of available drive slots will decrease correspondingly.

3 IO Modules:

Examine the Slots Available for IO Modules

Add 2 FC 8Gb Modules.

The number of slots will decrease correspondingly.

4 Software & Suites:

In this example we did not have the license file, so the Current column for all but
HYPERMAX OS Pack will be unchecked.

For this case we know that the Advance Suite was sold. So check the VMAX
Advanced Suite box.

Any desired software can be added here by clicking in the Desired column.

Click Upgrade Config to generate the Upgrade configuration.

Remote Replication Solution.

4 In Project “SRDFS Model” - Create two new Sites: Call one “Local” and the other “Remote”
