THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AT PENTECOST

Acts 2:1-47

Key verse 2:38


Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

1. Read verses 1-4. What do you know about the day of Pentecost? Where were the
believers and what were they doing? What happened?
This is when the Holy Spirit came upon the Disciples of Christ. Pentecost was the 50th day
after the week of Sabbath. Pentecost was a day for the feast of the harvest in Jewish tradition.
The apostles were together in prayer in unity.
We should also pray in faith…..
2. What does this (what happened in question 1) suggest about the power of the Holy Spirit?
What had Jesus told them previously about the coming of the Holy Spirit? (Jn 14:16-17, Jn
16:7-14, Acts 1:8)
Holy Spirit is very powerful, Fire refers to God’s Holiness… Fire is a cleansing element…
Isiah 6,

3. Read verses 5-13. Where was the crowd from? Why did they gather? What surprised and
utterly amazed them? What had happened to those who were filled with the Holy Spirit?
What was the response of the crowd?
God fearing Jews, a city setting, maybe they were business men from all countries….

4. What is the relationship of this event to the missionary command of Jesus? (Mark 16:15,
Acts 1:8) In what way is it a contrast to Babel in Genesis 11? What can we learn in this?
Pride lead to the fall of Babel… Language barrier can be Brocken through the Holy Spirit…

5. Read verses 14-15. What did Peter and the other apostles do? How had they changed?

Courageous speech…. When the Holy Spirit compels you sometimes you can’t control
yourself….

6. Read verses 16-21. How did Peter explain why the believers were acting so strangely?
What does it mean for sons and daughters to prophesy; for young men to see visions and old
men to dream dreams?

7. Who did Peter Witness to about Jesus (22)? What did God do to Jesus whom they had put to
death by crucifixion (23, 24)?

8. What did Peter quote (25-28)? What did David see and prophesy (29-31)? Who has raised
Jesus to lie and who are the witnesses of His resurrection (32)?
9. How does Peter relate the pouring out of the Holy Spirit to the resurrection of Jesus (33-
35)? How did God exalt Jesus at last (36)?

10. How did Peter point out their sin (23, 36)? How did the crowd respond (37)?

11. What did Peter teach them to do (38a)? What then will they receive as gift (38b)? To
whom is the promise given (39)?

12. How else did Peter exhort them (40)? How many repented and were baptized that day
(41)?

13. What did they devote themselves to (42)? How were their lives changed (43-47)? What
do you learn about how the Christian fellowship is supposed to be here?
