Universal  Design  for  Learning  (UDL):
To  address  Universal  Design  for  Learning  principles  to  extend  and  support  the  learning  experiences  for  all
students  I  will  do  a  few  things.  First,  to  offer  alternatives  for  visual  information  I  will  allow  students  to  gather
the  information  needed  from  a  book  or  a  computer  for  students  that  have  trouble  looking  at  a  computer
screen  for  too  long.  I  will  also  have  fact  sheets  in  different  languages  for  ELL  students.  To  help  students  relate
to  who  they  choose  to  research  I  will  include  fun  facts  on  a  poster  that  would  be  relevant  to  them  today.  To
provide  options  for  expression  I  will  have  different  books  with  levels  of  difficulty  for  more  advanced  readers.  I
will  hand  out  a  rubric  that  has  details  of  what  I  expect  from  them.  As  a  part  of  the  rubric  I  will  include  a  self-‐
assessment  portion  give  the  students  the  ability  to  reflect  on  how  they  can  improve.
Lesson  idea  implementation:
Students  will  create  a  poster  either  electronic  or  a  handmade  poster  to  advertise  their  person  from  history
that  was  given  to  them.  They  will  follow  the  rubric  and  at  the  end  complete  a  self-‐assessment  as  well.  The
teacher  will  create  a  rubric  that  shows  the  guidelines  of  what  is  to  be  expected.  The  teacher  will  also  assist
during  the  process  and  help  any  students  that  may  need  help.  The  project  will  be  introduced  during  the  social
studies  part  of  the  day.  It  will  be  introduced  the  week  before  we  get  into  each  person  in  history  so  that  the
students  will  have  prior  background  knowledge  when  they  learn  about  the  person  and  their  accomplishments
throughout  history.  On  the  fourth  day  of  this  activity  students  will  get  into  groups  with  those  who  learned
about  a  different  person  and  they  will  share  what  they  learned  to  each  other.
This  assignment  will  take  4  ½  days  to  complete.  On  the  first  day  the  students  will  get  all  of  their  notes,  this
will  continue  onto  the  second  day  for  the  social  studies  class  time.  On  the  third  day  the  students  will  start  to
make  their  advertisement.  If  students  need  time  on  the  first  half  of  the  fourth  day  they  can  use  the  time  to
finish  drawing/creating  their  advertisement.  For  the  second  half  of  the  fourth  day  the  students  will  get  to
present  their  work.  Students  will  be  assessed  by  a  rubric  that  will  be  provided  to  them  at  the  beginning  of  the
lesson.  The  final  product  will  be  used  to  inform  learning  because  students  will  have  knowledge  about  people

from  history  before  the  lesson  starts.  Differentiating  will  occur  from  having  different  resources  that  include
more  difficult  texts  for  more  advanced  readers.  To  extend  the  students  learning  to  a  higher  learning  level  this
activity  will  relate  to  the  next  social  studies  lesson  where  they  will  be  learning  about  the  people  the  students
did  their  project  on.  To  conclude  the  lesson,  I  will  put  the  students  in  groups  where  the  can  learn  about  other
famous  people  from  history  other  than  who  they  did  their  project  on.  To  provide  feedback  I  will  have  a  few
minutes  on  the  fifth  day  to  talk  to  each  student  individually  about  their  grade  and  why  they  received  the
grade  that  they  did.
Reflective  Practice:
After  designing  this  lesson  idea,  I  feel  that  the  activities  I  created  can  impact  student  learning  by  learning  how
to  use  their  available  resources  to  do  appropriate  research.  To  extend  this  lesson,  I  could  have  all  of  the
students  that  researched  the  same  person  to  work  together  to  create  one  poster  that  shows  the  life  and  the
accomplishments  of  that  person.  I  could  then  ask  the  students  to  add  their  project  to  the  class  website  so  that
others  may  see  their  creations  and  learn  as  well.
