Coldest Night of the Year Walkathon
On Feb, 24, 2018, Castlegar hosted its first annual Coldest
Night of the Year walkathon in solidarity with 122 cities across
Canada, to stand up and support charities that help the hurt-
ing, homeless, hungry and otherwise vulnerable populations.
With the help of
hundreds of adults
and youth in Cas-
tlegar, through do-
nations, pledges,
sponsorship and
hundreds of hours
of volunteer work,
we have raised
close to $18,000.
Funds raised from
this event will be
distributed to the Youth Action Network and Homelessness
Partnering Strategies Programs at Castlegar and District Com-
munity Services Society to assist in making the lives of people
who are a bit less fortunate just a bit easier.
None of this could be achieved without great support from
our community and we wish to express our gratitude and
thanks as follows:
To the three sponsors of Coldest Night Castlegar, our Lead

Electrical Limited; our Distance Sponsor Kootenay Savings
Credit Union. To our venue hosts at the United Church, Pio-
neer Arena/Curling rink and Robson Hall. To the many busi-
nesses which supported the event with in-kind donations in-
cluding: Mercer Celgar, McDonalds, Tim Hortons, Canadian
Tire, Safeway, No Frills, Kootenay Market, and Dirty Diggers.
To Selkirk College and the students who helped organize this
event: 3rd Year Nursing Program students Rya Josafadow and
Zoya Chernokoff; 1st year Social Work student Emma Cuell.
To the youth From the Rotary Interact Program who took
a lead role in volunteering to host the rest stop area. To the
youth from the Castlegar Youth Action Network who made
teams, raised funds and helped promote this event! To the
youth from the Leadership class at Stanley Humphries Sec-
ondary School who took on volunteer jobs in the kitchen, and
on the welcome and registration teams. To the 85 walkers, 12
teams and their captains, over 204 donors and 85 volunteers.
Thank you all.
Why do all this? Because we care. We care about everyone
in our community. Because we care that everyone has food to
eat and a warm place to sleep tonight. Because we care about
the people we hold close as friends and neighbors as much as
we care about the stranger on the street with nowhere to sleep
tonight. You can show that you care too.
Our goal for this event was to raise $20,000, and we are very
close. Coldest Night of the Year is still accepting donations un-
til March 31, 2018. To donate and help us reach our goal either

Hockey Championships
Nelson’s top 13 to 15 year old hockey players are cele-
brating a big tournament win, just one month before they
host the top nine Bantam teams in the province.
The Nelson Leafs, a Tier Three team, defied oddsmakers
this past weekend by beating four teams from across BC
and Alberta – all of them in Tier Two – before defeat-
ing their West Kootenay rivals, the Trail Smoke Eaters, in
the final of the Penticton Minor Hockey Tier Two Bantam
Tournament this past weekend.
The Leafs faced off against a handful of very competitive
squads, including the Kelowna/West Kelowna Rockets, the
St. Albert, AB Raiders, the Prince George Cougars and the

She. We. They: The Women Show
Touchstones Nelson Museum of Art and History, in
partnership with The Nelson and District Women’s Cen-
tre, is putting together a community-curated exhibition
titled ‘She. We. They: The Women Show.’
Two very important facets of this exhibition will be a
60 foot long timeline and a ‘wall of women’ portrait dis-
play of 100 plus images. Other facets of the exhibition will
include video, a response wall, history of feminist text/
press and programming and performance.
The intent of this historical and collaborative exhibition
is to frame feminism from many perspectives – illustrate
the past – celebrate community and acknowledge the
cultural currents which continue to be addressed. This
exhibition is both a celebration and a contribution to the
important conversations taking place at present about
She. We. They. Curator: Community – curated; Arin Fay.
The exhibition opens on International Women’s Day,
March 8, 2018 and runs through May 27.

Oxygen Spring Break Camps!
ART and ACT!
Oxygen is excited to be offering three fun-filled spring
break camps for kids aged 6 – 12. The first week is ART
week with two half day camps. Oxygen is thrilled to have
Anita Levesque rejoin the Oxygen faculty to offer ‘Art
Camp – Inspired!’ where kids will learn about great artists
of the past and present while trying their hand at creat-
ing something in their style or inspired by them. Inspired
runs Monday to Thursday, March 19 – 22 and is for ages 6
– 8 years. Anita founded the children and youth program-
ming at Oxygen and is passionate about the importance of
art in our children’s lives.
“Art is essential. It connects us and brings great joy to our
lives. By making and creating, we become problem solvers,
exercising both sides of our brains. It is a celebration of beauty,
a mode to express what is deep within and a tool to better
understand our place in the world.” says Anita Levesque.
Following Inspired is ‘Art Camp – All About Me!’ with
artist Natasha Smith for ages 9 –12 years, which also runs
March 19 – 22 from 1 – 4 pm. Natasha will introduce kids
to all sorts of art making techniques as they explore and
express what’s really important to them.
The second week brings ACT!, a theatre workshop with
one of our inspiring and popular instructors Martina
Avis. Kids will learn dramatic skills while playing games,
taking on characters, telling stories and work towards a
small performance on the last day of camp.
Oxygen Art Centre is a not for profit, community arts
organization and artist run centre that provides arts edu-
cation as a community service. Tuition is subsidized to
keep it accessible to everyone. Oxygen Art Centre has
a volunteer credit program that can be used towards
reduced tuition costs. Some scholarships are also available
for help with accessing programming. Students travelling
in for camps from outside of the Nelson area are auto-
matically eligible for 25% off camp tuition!
