Title: Beginning, Middle, End with Overlapping Murals

Lesson Duration: 3 days

Lesson Process:

Teacher will read “Three Little Pigs” to students

Using Powerpoint, “What is overlapping?” students will view visual art pieces that feature
overlapping technique. Teacher will go over key vocabulary

Next, students (In teams of three) will use a Comic Strip Graphic Organizer, students will sketch
the key elements of Beginning, Middle End (Introduction, Problem, Solution) sketching which
elements from the story they will include to retell the story and what shared component they will
use for overlapping

Students will write a brief summary of beginning middle end of story.

Day 2

Class will review key terms and yesterday’s lesson.


Students will view “Overlapping Mural Rubric” to understand expectations

Students will collaborate about sketches to prepare to draw on larger scale paper using rubric
to make sure they have all needed elements

Students will have a brief Team Meeting discussing plans from day before specifically ensuring
that their sketches are a) accurate b) have overlapping components c) show examples of
Beginning, Middle, and End inspired by text.

Next, overlapping papers, student will illustrate overlapping elements of their Art Piece with their
team members. Students will then illustrate the entire story scene inspired by the text using mixed
media elements(pencils, crayons, colored pencils, markers)

Day 3

Using index cards and illustrations students will write captions retelling the beginning middle and
end of the story represented by their mural. Using a highlighter students will Highlight temporal
words (First, Next, Last), Problem, Solution.

Next, students will present retellings discussing Art elements, and key details.
Assessment: Peers will vote using 1,2,3, system on students grade and give feedback.
Assessment: Teacher will use rubric to grade presentations
