Safety standards
The network elements of this product conform to all relevant safety standards.
In particular, they meet the following standards:
• IEC 60950—Safety of Information Technology Equipment
• IEC 60825 series—Safety of Laser Products
• FDA 21 CFR 1040—Performance Standards for Light-Emitting Products,
2000
The classification of Nortel Networks products is based on the maximum
accessible power. Under normal operating conditions, the power within the
optical system can be high, but not accessible. Upon fault or fiber disconnect
conditions, the internal safety systems reduce the power to the accessible
power level, as stated on the labels.

Observing safety guidelines 1-3
International standards
The IEC 60825 series of international standards covers the safety of laser and
LED products. The following list provides examples from the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Code of Federal Register (CFR), and
European Norm (EN) series of standards:
• IEC 60825-1, Safety of Laser Products—Part 1: Equipment Classification,
Requirements and User’s Guide Edition 1.1; Edition 1: 1993, Consolidated
with Amendment 1: 1997; Issue 1, 1998, 217 pgs. (Part 1 of a series of
publications under the general title of: Safety of Laser Products). This
standard provides information about equipment classification and on limit
values for safety of laser products.
• IEC 60825-2:2000-05, Safety of Laser Products—Part 2: Safety of Optical
Fibre Communication Systems, Second Edition, May 2000, 100 pgs. This
standard provides information about the safety of optical fiber
communication systems.
• Regional standards such as the EN 60825 series: for example, British
Standard BS EN 60825-1:1994, Safety of Laser Products, Equipment
Classification, Requirements and User’s Guide, 15 Dec. 1994, 126 pgs.
These standards are based on the IEC 60825 series.
Note: In Europe, the EN 60825 series of standards for CE marking
purposes evaluate the safety of laser and LED products. The EN 60825
series is technically equivalent to IEC 60825.
• In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) publishes
regulations 21 CFR 1010, Performance Standards for Electronics
Products: General, April 1996, and 21 CFR 1040 in the Code of Federal
Register (CFR). Regulations 21 CFR 1010 and 21 CFR 1040 contain laser
safety requirements equivalent to the European standards.
Although the FDA classifications (I, IIIb, IV) are similar to those of the IEC
(1, 3A, 3B, 4), these classifications are not directly equivalent. Nortel
Networks ensures that all its products are compliant with either or both the
FDA and IEC requirements, as appropriate.
The optical systems meet either the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) or
Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) standards. SDH systems are
normally for use outside North America. SONET systems are normally for use
in North America. Normally, the IEC 60825 series of standards are used to
classify and certify SDH products and FDA CFR is used to classify and certify
SONET products.
The maximum intrinsic output power of laser and LED sources used in optical
fiber communication systems can vary from Class 1 (IEC)/Class I (FDA) for
short-reach applications, to Class 3A (IEC)/Class IIIb (FDA) or higher for
long-reach applications. The IEC standards require that products be assessed
on their maximum accessible optical power during both normal operation and
under fault conditions.
Under normal operation, with all optical connectors in position and terminated
correctly, the optical radiation is completely enclosed. The system is a Class 1
(IEC)/Class I (FDA) product, regardless of the transmitted power within the
optical fiber.
Radiation hazards
If you have unterminated optical cables (breaks in the fiber-optic cable or
removal of the connector can cause this problem) the output from circuit packs
that contain optical transmitters can be greater than Class 1 (IEC)/Class I
(FDA). The requirements contained in standard IEC 60825-2:2000-05
concerning optical fiber communication systems should be used.
Standard IEC 60825-2:2000-05 requires that you evaluate the level of
radiation hazard introduced under acceptable conditions for optical fiber
communication systems.
• Hazard level 1 (IEC) corresponds to Class 1 (IEC). You can install and use
products with this classification in any location.
• Hazard level 3A (IEC) corresponds to Class 3A (IEC). You can install and
use products with this classification in restricted or controlled locations.
Although you can consider a Class 3A optical source safe for long-term
direct viewing without optical aids, Nortel Networks does not recommend
this activity. Hazard level 3A is the label normally applied to optical
products that Nortel Networks designs for short-haul and medium-haul
applications.
• Hazard level k x 3A indicates that you can access optical powers higher
than Class 3A (IEC). Standard IEC 60825-2:2000-05 permits these higher
levels in controlled locations. Nortel Networks optical products in this
category (for example, the MOR Plus circuit pack) have warning labels
that clearly state the k x 3A hazard level.

Labeling
According to the IEC 60825 and FDA series of standards, you must attach
labels to the optical circuit pack and to the product. The following paragraphs
provide examples of several different precautionary messages. The following
paragraphs provide details on the words and meaning of the symbols and
legends, and explain the hazard precautions needed for optical communication
systems.
Note: To make the label fit the circuit pack faceplate, the size, and details
of the circuit pack explanatory label can be changed.
• class number according to both IEC 60825-1 and FDA CFR standards
• wavelength, shown as a nominal or a dense wavelength division
multiplexing (DWDM) range of values, for example
— 1550 nm nominal means a single wavelength within the range 1440 nm
to 1625 nm
— 1425 nm–1625 nm means that multiple discrete DWDM wavelengths
exist in the range
The book symbol can appear on products where space is limited and the full
safety text cannot be included. Details of the full labeling text is contained
within this documentation.
Circuit pack explanatory label—Class 1 (IEC)/Class I (FDA)
Class 1 (IEC)/Class I (FDA) laser products are safe under all conditions and
can be used in any location. A typical label is as follows.
DX1578
The label can be fixed to the faceplate or any flat surface. If the optical source
is Class 1 (IEC)/Class I (FDA), you do not need to attach a label to the
equipment.
The starburst laser warning symbol is optional for Class 1(IEC)/Class I (FDA)
products. This symbol is normally placed close to the appropriate optical
connectors.

Warning
Hot surfaces can cause burns. When handling these circuit packs, take the
necessary precautions and read the specific instructions for that circuit
pack. For example, wear insulating gloves when you remove these circuit
packs.
Storing circuit packs
Leave spare circuit packs in the original shielded containers until you need the
circuit packs. To prevent damage to circuit packs while in storage, follow the
procedures that prevent
• accumulation of dirt or dust on the pin connectors
• damage to the printed-circuit board or its components
• warpage (to printed-circuit boards stored in areas where the humidity can
exceed 95% and the temperature can exceed 70°C)
Transporting circuit packs
When you transport circuit packs, pack each circuit pack in its original
shielded container and padding, or in a shielded bag. If you lose the original
material, use another shielded container.

ATTENTION
The OPTera Connect DX bay is narrower than the space between bays. Be
sure to leave the correct space between bays for your bay layout.
See Figure 2-4 (ANSI layout) and Figure 2-5 (ETSI layout) for illustrations
of the correct bay spacings.
1 Mark the reference and layout lines on the floor as shown in Figure 2-4 (ANSI
layout) or Figure 2-5 (ETSI layout).
Note: It is recommended that you install OPTera Connect DX bays at least
400 mm (15 in.) away from the nearest wall. This space gives enough access
to the back of the bay to allow maintenance on bays that are in service.
2 Mark out, and then make holes for the four attachment bolts. See Figure 2-4
(ANSI layout) or Figure 2-5 (ETSI layout).
For concrete floors: Make the holes deep enough to meet the local
earthquake requirements.
For wood floors: Make the appropriate pilot holes for lag bolts.
For metal floors: Make the appropriate clearance holes for machine bolts.
3 Use a vacuum cleaner to remove all dirt from the holes.
4 Insert the bay anchors in the floors with a hammer.
5 Cover the holes with masking tape to protect the holes.

OPTera Connect DX optical switch 323-1531-201 Rel 6 Iss 1 Standard Apr 2004
Installing the OPTera Connect DX bay 2-39
The following general considerations apply for the power connections from
the power supply point to the OPTera Connect DX bay.
Note: Other names for the power supply point are ‘station battery’ or
‘office supply’. This document refers to the power supply point as the
‘battery-distribution fuse bay’ (BDFB).
• The size needed for the power cable depends on the distance between the
BDFB and the OPTera Connect DX bay and the voltage drop you can
tolerate in the feed cables.
• The power terminations on the OPTera Connect DX bay can accommodate
cable size no. 4 or no. 2 AWG (NTCA89GJ).
• You can use different types of fuses or circuit breakers to protect the cables
between the BDFB and the OPTera Connect DX bay. The amperage values
given do not depend on the type of fuse or circuit breaker used.
• It is recommended that you use power cables with a temperature rating of
392o Fahrenheit.
You can use either six cables or two cables to connect the power from the
battery distribution fuse bay (BDFB) to the OPTera Connect DX network
element:
• Six power feeds (see Table 2-2)
— You can connect six power cables to the front power termination block.
— The power cables can enter the bay from above, or through the floor.
— For each power cable of the OPTera Connect DX network element,
Nortel Networks recommends a 50 amperes circuit breaker to meet all
types of configurations and future evolution.
Note 1: You can lower the rating of the circuit breakers according to the
system configurations and capacity described in Table 2-2.
Note 2: Nortel Networks recommends that you size the cables according
to the maximum power capabilities of the bay (i.e. 6x50)
—continued—
Note 3: You must upgrade the circuit breakers of the system if the switch
module circuit packs are upgraded.
Note 4: To secure cables or corrugated tubing use lacing cord at the first
cable or frame support (top bracket if one exists).

Note: These rules only apply to the STM-64 10G T/R, STM-16, Dual
STM-16, Dual GE and Quad tributary circuit packs.
You manage the slack in the optical fibers depending on the requirements of
the installation. The following restrictions apply:
• The STM-64 10G T/R circuit packs have a maximum of 16 optical fibers
at Release 6 of OPTera Connect DX.
• The STM-16 tributary circuit packs have a maximum of 32 optical fibers
at Release 6 of OPTera Connect DX. For the STM-16 tributary circuit
packs, you must terminate the optical fibers to length or store the optical
fibers in a separate bay.
• The Dual STM-16 tributary circuit packs have a maximum of 64 optical
fibers at Release 6 of OPTera Connect DX. For the Dual STM-16 tributary
circuit packs, you must terminate the optical fibers to length or store the
optical fibers in a separate bay.
• The Dual GE tributary circuit packs have a maximum of 96 optical fibers
at Release 6 of OPTera Connect DX. For the Dual GE tributary circuit
packs, you must terminate the optical fibers to length, or store the optical
fibers in a separate bay.
• The Quad STM-1 or Quad STM-4 tributary circuit packs have a maximum
of 128 optical fibers at Release 6 of OPTera Connect DX. For the Quad
STM-1 or Quad STM-4 tributary circuit packs, you must terminate the
optical fibers to length or store the optical fibers in a separate bay.
• The Quad STM-16 tributary circuit packs have a maximum of 64 optical
fibers at Release 6 of OPTera Connect DX. For the Quad STM-16 tributary
circuit packs, you must terminate the optical fibers to length or store the
optical fibers in a separate bay.
Observe the following rules when you install and route optical fibers from the
OPTera Connect DX shelves.

CAUTION
Risk of service interruption
Label all optical fibers correctly before you install and route
the optical fibers. Correct labels on the optical fibers can
prevent disconnection of the wrong optical fiber during
in-service maintenance.
1 Label all optical connectors and optical fibers. For more information about
how to label the optical connectors and optical fibers, refer to Procedure 5-4,
“Labelling cables and optical fibers”.
2 If necessary, remove the cable covers which run up the sides of the bay. For
more information about how to remove the cable covers, refer to
Procedure 2-10, “Removing or installing the cable covers on the OPTera
Connect DX bay” in this document.
3 Select your next step.

DANGER
Risk of eye injury
When you handle optical fibers, follow the safety guidelines
in Chapter 1, “Observing safety guidelines” in this
document, and those recommended by your company.
If you have a piece of a glass in your eye, get medical
assistance immediately.
1 Loosen one of the optical patch cords from the shelf optical fiber guides to
provide sufficient slack.
Remove the adapterless circuit pack from the shelf and disconnect the optical patch cords
connected to the circuit pack
CAUTION
Risk of equipment damage
Never remove the connector bulkheads from the faceplate
of adapterless circuit packs. See Figure 6-8 for the location
of the connector bulkheads.
2 Open both latches of the circuit pack. Pull out the circuit pack from the shelf.
(See Figure 6-8.)
3 Place the circuit pack on a flat surface.
4 Open the door of the circuit pack.
5 Disconnect and then slide downward all the optical adapters from the
faceplate guide of the circuit pack, until they reach the bottom of the adapter
guide. (See Figure 6-9.)
6 First make sure that the optical adapters are adequately labelled. Then
remove all optical adapters from the faceplate of the circuit pack. (See Figure
6-10.)
CAUTION
Risk of equipment damage
When you insert the ferrule into the sleeve, do not pull the
ferrule out of the sleeve at an angle. If you pull the ferrule
at an angle, you can cause the optical fiber to break.

8 Clean the optical patch cords connected to the adapters. See Procedure 6-1,
“Cleaning optical connectors on patch cords” for more information.
9 Turn the SC connector housing up and out of the faceplate of the circuit pack
to a 60° angle. This action exposes the optical fiber inside the optical fiber
connector housings, so that you can start the cleaning procedures for the
connectors inside the circuit pack, see Figure 6-11.
Inspect the optical connector
10 Insert the optical fiber that requires cleaning into the fiberscope adapter to
determine if the connector is clean.
11 Turn on the light in the fiberscope.
12 Adjust the focus so that you can identify the four different zones. See Figure
6-4 for an illustration of the single mode optical fiber zones.
—continued—
Step Action
13 If the fiberscope shows a dirty optical fiber, go to step 14. For an example of
a dirty optical fiber that can contain oil, grease, or contaminates, see
Figure 6-5.
Clean the connector ferrule
14 Take a new premoistened cloth (TX-806).
Note: Never reuse cleaning cloths. Use new material for each connector and
avoid contamination of the lint-free cloth by unclean surfaces.
15 Put the end face connector in the middle of the premoistened cloth. Apply
moderate pressure and wipe the ferrule (or plug) by rotating the cloth along
the barrel and the ferrule (or plug) tip until the ferrule squeaks.
This action removes any contaminants on the ferrule.
16 While the ferrule is still wet with solvent, firmly wipe its end face and lateral
surface with a new and dry lint-free folded cloth (TX-404). This polishes off
any residue that remains on the ferrule tip.
17 Fold a new lint-free cloth (TX-404) in half and put it in a flat, smooth, and clean
surface. Remove any remaining particles from the end face by wiping in a
figure “S” motion on the lint-free cloth. Do not use the same area of the cloth
twice.
Note: If you require a higher degree of cleanliness or if a flat surface is not
available, you can perform this step with an Alcoa Prep cartridge cleaner
according to the manufacturer instructions.
18 Reinsert the connector into the fiberscope and determine the cleanliness of
the connector.

Reconnect optical fibers and reinsert the adapterless circuit pack into the shelf
CAUTION
Risk of equipment damage
Before you insert the circuit packs into the shelf, make sure
that the optical fibers are connected to the appropriate
connectors. If you do not connect the optical fibers
correctly, you can damage the circuit pack.
27 Slide the appropriate optical adapter in the adapter guide on the faceplate of
the circuit pack. Figure 6-12 shows the installation of an SC-SC-type optical
adapter.
28 Repeat step 27 for the other optical adapters, if required.
29 Pass the optical fibers that you want to connect to the circuit pack through the
bottom opening of the circuit pack (see Figure 6-13).
30 Connect the required patch cords to the optical adapters of the adapterless
circuit pack (see Figure 6-13).
Note 1: Make sure that you have already cleaned the connectors on the
patch cords that you use, as described in Procedure 6-1, “Cleaning optical
connectors on patch cords”.
Note 2: Make sure that you connect the optical fibers to the correct connector
when reconnecting the optical fibers to the circuit packs.
Note 3: If low return losses are occurring from circuit pack connectors, repeat
step 14 to step 18 for all connectors.
31 Slide all three optical adapters upwards until they fit into the SC-connectors
inside the connector housing. (See Figure 6-13.)
32 Close the door of the circuit pack.
33 Open both latches and push the circuit pack all the way into the shelf until the
circuit pack engages the backplane connector. For more information on how
to reinstall adapterless circuit packs, refer to Chapter 3, “Installing the circuit
packs in OPTera Connect DX shelves” in this document.
34 Close both latches.

Procedure 6-3
Cleaning optical connectors inside Quad or Dual GE
tributary circuit packs
Use this procedure to clean the optical connectors inside Quad or Dual GE
tributary circuit packs.
Procedure tasks
• Pull the optical connector carrier out from the circuit pack.
• Slacken the optical fibers connected to the circuit pack (step 1).
• Release optical connector carrier from the circuit pack (step 2).
• Disconnect the connector in the optical connector carrier, inspect, and clean the fiber (step 5).
• Reconnect the optical fiber into the carrier (step 12).
• Fasten cables into the fiber clips on the side of the bay (step 15).
Expected results
• When you insert the fiber into the fiberscope adapter, you see a clean fiber optic connector.
• If the expected results do not occur:
— Repeat the cleaning procedure for the optical connectors inside the circuit packs and for the
connectors that are connected to the outside of the circuit packs.
— Clean the optical connectors on the fibers.
— Contact your next level of support.

Step Action
DANGER
Risk of eye injury
When you handle optical fibers, follow the safety guidelines
in Chapter 1, “Observing safety guidelines” in this
document, and those recommended by your company.
If you have a piece of a glass in your eye, get medical
assistance immediately.
1 Loosen the optical fiber from the fiber guides on the shelf to provide enough
slack.
Release the optical connector carrier
2 Make sure that the circuit pack is properly seated in the backplane. Make sure
that the latches are closed. This ensures that the circuit pack is properly
grounded.
Do not remove the circuit pack from the shelf.
3 Grasp the latch of the optical connector carrier. Carefully extend the carrier
out of the circuit pack on its ‘scissors’ (refer to Figure 6-14).
Disconnect the connector in the optical connector carrier
4 Make sure that the optical fibers are correctly labelled. Note which optical
fiber connects to which connector on the circuit pack. You need to connect the
optical fibers later.
5 Note that the fiber carrier has a large slot (see Figure 6-14) that permits
access to the optical connectors from both sides.
Place your left hand around the carrier so that you hold the patch cord from
the front and rear (with your fingers through the slot).
6 Hold the plug retainer with your fingers. Do not pull the fiber. Carefully pull the
plug retainer away from the carrier connector to unlock the carrier connector.

DANGER
Risk of exposure to laser radiation
When you open an optical circuit pack, invisible laser
radiation can be present.
When you handle an optical connector, do not stare into the
laser beam or view the optical connector directly with any
optical instrument. Invisible light can damage your eyes. Cap
all optical connectors when possible.
7 Inspect and, if necessary, clean the optical connector. Follow the instructions
in Procedure 6-1, “Cleaning optical connectors on patch cords”.
Reconnect the optical connector
CAUTION
Risk of equipment damage
When you insert the ferrule in to the sleeve, do not push the
ferrule in to the sleeve at an angle. If you push the ferrule
in to the sleeve at an angle, you can cause the optical fiber
to break.
8 Insert the connector directly into a clean adapter housing. This action keeps
the ferrule from contact with any type of contaminant.
Note: Never place a clean connector in an adapter that has not been
cleaned.
9 Carefully insert the ferrule into the sleeve so that the guide pin enters the
guide slot (see Figure 6-2).
10 Hold the plug retainer and carefully push it into the connector to lock it in.
11 Re-insert the plug of the optical fiber connector.
Reconnect the optical fiber to the carrier
CAUTION
Risk of equipment damage
When you insert the ferrule into the sleeve, do not pull the
optical fiber out of the circuit pack. If you pull the optical
fiber out of the circuit pack you can cause damage to the
optical fiber when you reinstall the faceplate.
12 Carefully insert the ferrule into the sleeve so that the guide pin enters the
guide slot (see Figure 6-2).
—continued—
Step Action
13 Use your fingers to hold the plug retainer and carefully push it into the
connector to lock it in.
Note: Make sure that you have reconnected the optical fibers to the correct
connector when you reconnect the optical fiber to the carrier connector.
14 Tuck the optical fibers under the bottom of the carrier door and carefully close
that fiber carrier. Make sure that you insert the optical fibers into the slot in the
fiber cross member.
CAUTION
Possible damage to optical fiber
Make sure that you do not pinch the patch cord in the fiber
carrier when you close the fiber carrier.
