Academic overview
Learning outcomes
The learning goals associated with this unit are to:

1. apply management accounting techniques to enable managers to measure and enhance

organisational performance
2. analyse and make recommendations regarding the design of management accounting
systems
3. evaluate management accounting systems in terms of their behavioural implications
4. apply critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills to demonstrate a
comprehensive understanding of the topics covered in ACW3431.

Teaching approach
Lecture and/or tutorials or problem classes

This unit will be taught as a two-hour lecture and a one and half hour tutorial each week for 12
weeks. The lectures will not cover every aspect of each topic listed in the Unit Schedule as you are

ACW3431 Management accounting - Semester 1 (S1-01) - 2018
weeks. The lectures will not cover every aspect of each topic listed in the Unit Schedule as you are
expected to acquire a comprehensive understanding by undertaking the prescribed and
recommended reading and by completing the week-by-week tutorial activities and other in-
semester assessment tasks. Given this framework students are expected to attend all lecture and
tutorial sessions and participate actively. In order to participate and to gain maximum benefit from
the sessions, all the questions, set for each week are to be attempted before the tutorial for that
week. At times in the lecture and tutorial sessions the lecturer or tutor will invite students to raise
and discuss relevant issues and areas of concern. Tutorials commence in week 1 and
weekly tutorial questions are outlined in the tutorial plan on Moodle.

The tutorials provide an opportunity for you and your peers to discuss the current topic(s) and to
compare your completed assessment tasks with other students' work. While tutorials provide an
opportunity for you to demonstrate the application of your knowledge and skills there is also an
opportunity for you to ask the tutor to clarify your understanding of the topics and associated
concepts covered to date.

In general you are expected to spend two to three hours of self-directed study for each hour in
class. Some of this time should be devoted to discussions with other students. The benefit of such
discussions will be enhanced if you have completed relevant prescribed and recommended
readings and/or started or completed the current assessment task(s). The prescribed readings
are listed in this guide and the recommended readings are on the unit's Moodle web-site. The
Moodle web-site provides access to material including past examination papers and suggested
model answers. These resources will enable you to develop a mastery of the topics covered by the
unit.

To ensure a high probability of successfully completing this unit, you need to manage your time
and studies in a systematic way. At a minimum this should involve:

● reading prescribed and selected recommended material prior to attending lectures;

● completing week-by-week tutorial activities tasks prior to attending tutorials;
● attempting relevant questions from past final examination papers;
● discussions with past and present students; and
● revision of the semester's work during the SWOT-Vac and prior to the final examination.

Workshops

The workshop is designed to discuss further management accounting problems and help students
in their assessments preparation. These sessions are not a substitute for students missing lectures
or tutorials.

Active learning

Small group discussion allows students to express themselves in the tutorial classroom. Students
are required to participate in small group discussions than in a normal classroom lecture in a more
comfortable setting amongst them, and from a sheer numbers perspective, by dividing the
students up more students get opportunities to speak out.

Recording of lectures
This unit will have lectures (or seminars in the absence of lectures) recorded. These recordings will
be available to current students. If there is more than one seminar or lecture stream, the Chief
Examiner may decide not to record each stream. In the event that there is an equipment failure
and the lecture is not recorded in part or in full, no alternative recording will be provided. The Chief
Examiner may determine a part or parts of lectures (or seminars) unsuitable for recording.

Unit schedule
For units with on-campus classes, teaching activities are normally scheduled to start on the hour
(teaching will commence on the hour and conclude 10 minutes prior to the scheduled end time).

Students should note that the program outlined below is a guide to the material to be covered in
this unit and not a definitive statement of when that material will be covered.  Specific details
relating to the timing will be discussed in class.

A student’s final mark is normally the sum of the marks obtained in all of the individual assessment
items in the unit.

Second marking
Where an assessment task is given a fail grade by an examiner, that piece of work will be marked
again by a second examiner who will independently evaluate the work, and consult with the first
marker.   No student will be awarded a fail grade for an assessment task or unit without a second
examiner confirming the result.

Note: Exceptions to this are individual pieces of assessment contributing 10% or less of the final
mark, unless the total of such pieces exceeds 30% of the final mark.

Return of final marks

Faculty policy states that 'the final mark that a student receives for a unit will be determined by the
Board of Examiners taking into account all aspects of assessment'.

9
ACW3431 Management accounting - Semester 1 (S1-01) - 2018
The final mark for this unit will be released by the Board of Examiners on the date nominated in the
Faculty Calendar. Student results will be accessible through the my.monash portal.

Exam viewing
Feedback on student performance in examinations and other end-of-semester assessment is
required. The feedback should be in accordance with the University's procedures on Unit
Assessment. Details of the examination script viewing arrangements set down by the Faculty of
Business and Economics are available at https://www.monash.edu/business/current-students

Additional information: Most, if not all, of your paper should be in your own words. Be very careful
not to accidentally copy something from course materials or any other sources -- copying even
phrases or parts of a sentence can be considered plagiarism.  If, however, you would like to use a
short quotation from a book as evidence, you should cite the quotation like this, with author's name
and page number. If you are citing from one of the websites that we read, give the name of the
website.
IPlease note that: copying ANY PORTION of your paper directly from internet sources, the course
textbooks, AND/OR from classmates will result in failing the paper.  Again, copying ANYTHING,
including short phrases, from other sources or a classmate will result in a grade of ZERO on the
paper.  In other words, this paper must be written ENTIRELY (100%) IN YOUR OWN
WORDS.  This paper is designed to describe and analyze YOUR experience.
In order to ensure the academic integrity of your submission and to deter others from copying your
work, your submission may be processed by Turnitin. The University's plagiarism policy is
available online.

Examination(s)

Title: Examination 1
Weighting: 60%
Length: 2 hours
Type (open/closed book): Closed book.
Hurdle requirements (where applicable): There is a hurdle requirement for this unit. The learning
outcomes of this unit require you to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the topics
covered in the unit. Hence the hurdle requirement for this unit requires that you must attain a mark
of at least 50% in the final examination. If you fail the unit solely because of failure to satisfy the
hurdle requirement, a mark of 48 will be determined by the faculty's Board of Examiners on the
recommendation of the unit's Chief Examiner.

The outcome from application of the hurdle requirement is often misunderstood by students who
are awarded 48N. For example, some students mistakenly believe that 48N means they failed the
final examination by two marks and that a second re-mark of their examination paper might find
two extra marks. Whereas 48N does not provide any indication of the mark attained in the final
examination other than a mark less than 50% was awarded.

The following example should make the application of the hurdle requirement clear. In this unit
40% of the assessment regime is allocated to in-semester assessment and 60% to the final 3-hour
examination. A student enrolled in this unit might achieve 35 out of 40 for their in-semester
15
ACW3431 Management accounting - Semester 1 (S1-01) - 2018
examination. A student enrolled in this unit might achieve 35 out of 40 for their in-semester
assessment and 25 out of 60 for the final examination. While the overall total of these marks is
60C the final examination mark is five marks below the required 50%. Consequently a mark of 48N
will be determined by the faculty's Board of Examiners on the recommendation of the unit's Chief
Examiner.

Electronic devices allowed in the exam: Electronic devices (including calculators) are not permitted
in tests and examinations in this unit unless identified with an “approved for use” label. These
labels are available from the Course Management Office (Building 6, Level 4).
Exam details: The exam will comprise a mix of theoretical, discussion, conceptual and
computational questions. The entire course materials are examinable.

Extension and penalties

Students may be provided with an extension of up to and including five calendar days. Students
seeking an extension due to exceptional circumstances and for extensions beyond five calendar
days must use the University Special Consideration Policy and Procedures.

Students wishing to apply for an extension must submit a request via email to the unit coordinator
(or equivalent) prior to the assessment deadline. Accepted circumstances for applying for an
extension include (but are not limited to):

● Short-term illness
● Unforeseen employment obligations
● Family circumstances

If an extension is granted, students must attach a copy of the email approving the extension when
submitting their assessment. Approval for an extension and the duration of extension is granted by
the unit coordinator (or equivalent). In exceptional circumstances, an application for an extension
may be considered by the unit coordinator (or equivalent) after the assessment due date has
lapsed.

Students who have not been granted either an extension or special consideration in order to
submit work after the published due date will be subject to late penalties.

Students seeking special consideration for assessment (extensions beyond five calendar days) are
required to follow the university Special Consideration Policy and Special Consideration
Procedures.

Students wishing to apply for special consideration:

● In-Semester assessment – submit to the Unit Coordinator

● End-Semester assessment – submit online to the Faculty of Education Admissions & Student
16
ACW3431 Management accounting - Semester 1 (S1-01) - 2018
● End-Semester assessment – submit online to the Faculty of Education Admissions & Student
Services Office.

All assessment must be submitted by the specified time on the specified due date unless an
extension has been granted before the due date. For all assessment items handed in after the
official due date and time, and without an agreed extension, a 10% penalty will apply to the total
possible mark for that assessment item for the first day after the due date of submission. After that,
a subsequent penalty of 10% per day will be applied for each day after the due date (including
weekends, and public holidays).

If the assessment item is 7 or more days overdue the work may be submitted and will be marked,
but not graded. A zero grade will be awarded. For students who have been granted an extension
or special consideration, the late penalty system will apply from the revised assessment due date.

Returning assignments
Marked assignments will be returned to you online by week 12. You should retain the marked copy
of your submission until the final results for the unit are released.
