e liked to say he was
from the projects,
that he grew up poor
but scrappy and
fought his way to success.
He was by turns a Marine,
a teacher, a politician and
a law school president.
Above all, he was a
salesman.
Michael Boland could “talk
a dog off a meat wagon,”
one former student told
The Lowell Sun, Boland’s
Massachusetts hometown
newspaper, in early 1989.
That was just as the unveil-
ing of Boland’s indiscretions
eroded his public persona.
Underneath the smooth-
talking, self-made man lay
an intelligent thief, a deceit-
ful debt dodger, an accused
child molester and a hot-
tempered con artist prone to
vengeful violence.
In October 1989, with
investigators closing in,
Boland left Massachusetts
for Daytona Beach. Posing
as a bookkeeper, he earned
the trust of an elderly widow.
Then, investigative reports
state, he drained more than a
half-million dollars from her
bank account.
Charges were brought and
dismissed in that case — a
recurring theme in Boland’s
life. But back in Massachu-
setts, police finally had the
evidence they needed to
extradite him for the crime
he came to Florida to escape.

DAYTONA BEACH — One
Daytona, the new shopping/
dining/entertainment com-
plex across the street from
Daytona International Speed-
way, is set to welcome two
new tenants this week.
On Tuesday, a 105-room
Fairfield Inn & Suites by
Marriott hotel behind the
International Motorsports
Center will open its doors at
noon.
Tentatively scheduled to
open that same day is a new
eatery called Built Custom
Burgers, which is at the north
end of Daytona Boulevard,
the main promenade at One
Daytona, across the street
from Cobb Daytona Luxury
Theatres.
The Fairfield is the first of
two hotels planned for One
Daytona. The other is a 145-
room, six-story Marriott

setts prison for arson.
When his stint in prison
was over, Boland found his
way back to Volusia County.
Here, his problems with the
law continued.
He was charged repeat-
edly for writing bad checks.
He adopted a young girl and
was charged with batter-
ing her mother. He kept
the company of teenagers,
inspiring rumors — and,
eventually, police reports —
of unlawful sex with minors.
In October, Boland, 69,
was sentenced to 30 years
in prison for having sex with
an underage girl, buying
liquor for another and taking
them both, plus a third girl,
from their state-mandated
foster home.
But reports of Boland’s
illicit activities date back
nearly 40 years.
Police reports, court doc-
uments, news accounts and
even a book piece together
a portrait of Boland as an
ambitious but reckless busi-
nessman who for decades
pursued social status — and
underage girls.
‘He just had money’
Boland was only in his
20s in the mid 1970s when
he was elected to the City
Council in his hometown
of Lowell, Massachusetts,
a city of about 100,000
people on the northwest
outskirts of Boston with
a history of textile manu-
facturing. Boland had a
bachelor’s degree in busi-
ness and also taught at
Lowell High School.
In many ways, Boland
seemed the picture of
prosperity into the 1980s.
He was popular, promi-
nent and wealthy, nephew
Ken Boland Jr. told The
News-Journal in a recent
interview.
“He just had money. I
don’t know where it came
from,” said Ken Boland Jr.
He kept his dark brown
hair and beard cropped
short. He drove a distinctive
blue-and-white Corvette
Stingray.
He also owned a horse
farm known as Tyngsboro
Stables, about an hour
northwest of Boston near
the New Hampshire line.
Ken Boland frequented the
farm as a teenager.
“There were girls my
age there — tons of them,
always,” he said. “Not so
many boys.”
Michael Boland’s 5.4-acre
property had a “gorgeous”
home bordering Lake Mas-
cuppic, Ken Boland said.
There was an in-ground
swimming pool, a henhouse,
a two-and-a-half-story
barn, more than a dozen
horses and a large range for
riding lessons.
Michael Boland earned
a master’s degree. And in
1985, he co-founded Com-
monwealth Law School and
named himself president.
But beneath the prosper-
ous veneer was a seedier
reality.
The first documented
accusation against Boland
was in December 1978. He
was arrested for indecent
assault and battery on a
12-year-old child. He was
30.
The charge was later
dismissed, but allegations
of sexual misconduct with
minor girls have followed
him ever since.
“He’s always had a pen-
chant for young girls,” Ken
Boland told The News-Jour-
nal. He said rumors about
his uncle were fodder for
family discussion.

Boland was “an arrogant
son of a gun,” State Attor-
ney’s Office investigator
Carol Polzella, who retired
in 2009, told The News-
Journal. “He saw himself as
a high roller. He was very
manipulative and arrogant.”
The young women who
oversaw Warner’s care were
“just blatantly dancers,”
recalled Polzella. When
Boland was in the room,
“The girls kinda bowed to
him.”
Boland was clearly giving
the women “trinkets to get
them to do things,” she said.
“He was not just exploiting
them for his own benefit. He
was exploiting them in order
to make money as well.”
Boland moved Warner,
89, to a secluded Ormond
Beach rental home situ-
ated on several acres. He
bought horses and claimed
they were for Warner, “but
she didn’t even know the
horses were there,” Polzella
recalled. “Had the allega-
tions and circumstances not
been so serious and so sad, it
would have been funny.”
When investigators took
Warner outside to see the
horses — and procured
papers proving she was part
owner of a strip club — she
began cooperating with
investigators.
“He was in the process
of completely cleaning her
out,” Polzella said. “The
truth is she probably would
have left everything she had
to him, had he not done the
things he did to exploit her.”
In the middle of that
investigation, Boland tried
to ingratiate himself to Day-
tona Beach police, offering
to “provide information to
them as it relates to illegal
activity and drugs,” Polzella
recalled.
Daytona businessman
Ronald Krenn told a News-
Journal reporter in 1991 that
Boland had a 16-year-old
girlfriend. The girl was
listed as a witness for the
state against him.
But Warner was in no
condition to testify, and
the young women who had
cared for her either lacked
credibility or didn’t want to
be implicated, Polzella said.
The abuse and exploitation
charges against Boland were
dismissed.
Boland also was charged
in October 1991 with ille-
gally employing a minor
— news accounts at the time
allege some of his oil wres-
tlers were teens. That, too,
was dismissed.
But his legal troubles were
far from over.
Debbie, the Massachu-
setts teen Boland brought
to Daytona Beach in 1989,
told investigators about
Boland’s involvement in the
Massachusetts arson. She
recounted the same story
to Pattullo of the Andover
police. She also told them
she had been involved with
Boland for several years.
“He was a slimeball,”
Pattullo said. He arrested
Boland and took him back
to Massachusetts in hand-
cuffs. There, Boland was
convicted of arson and
sentenced to 8-10 years in
prison. He served five years,
and was released in July
1998.
Then he headed back to
Florida.
‘Dangerous threat’
to society
Boland returned to Volusia
County, and continued to
have trouble with the law.
He also continued to pursue
underage girls, numerous
police and other reports
show.
He took in a troubled teen-
ager. Despite his criminal

By 2001, Boland was pop-
ping up in police reports.
He broke traffic laws. He
pawned property 185 times
over the next 15 years.
His Ormond Beach neigh-
bors initially thought him
a sophisticated business-
man. He lied about being a
tutor for the county school
district. He applied to the
district in 2005, but spokes-
woman Nancy Wait said
he was disqualified after a
background check.
He served a short stint in
the county jail in 2006 for
battering the mother of his
adopted daughter.
From January 2002
to October 2013, he was
charged 15 times with pass-
ing worthless checks and
once with driving an unreg-
istered vehicle.
An employer accused
Boland of stealing thousands
of dollars. He started several
companies of his own with
business partners who also
had criminal records. He
registered one as a charity,
and then used it to solicit
timeshare owners, according
to a 2013 arrest report. No
charges were filed.
Then, a deluge of reports
hit local law enforcement
regarding Boland’s relation-
ships with underage girls.
Between 2012 and
2015, area law enforce-
ment received at least 12
reports accusing Boland
of inappropriate relations
with underage girls. Girls,
their parents and Boland’s
associates accused him of
pedophilia, inappropriate
touching, paying adults for
access to their kids, sup-
plying drugs to teenagers
and child sex trafficking.
Reports indicate Boland also
was brought to the FBI’s
attention.
Several women who
told police and The News-
Journal about their sexual
encounters with Boland used
the same term to describe
him: “Sugar daddy.”
Boland was arrested for

2015 after he picked up three
underage girls who had
walked away from a group
home in Polk County, and
then moved two of them
between low-end motels
in the Daytona Beach area
for a week, police reports
show. That situation ended
when the father of another
woman, Hailey Cole, con-
fronted Boland at the hotel.
A chase ensued and ended in
a crash. But Boland posted
a $10,000 bond and he was
out on the street again. He
violated the terms of his
release repeatedly, police
reports indicate.
Then, in June 2016,
19-year-old Hailey Cole
died in Boland’s bed. When
she was still underage, she
had accused Boland in a
2014 police report of giving
her and several other teen-
age girls drugs in exchange
for sex. Her cause of death
was ruled an overdose.
During that same period,
though, the State Attorney’s

involving a minor. He was
arrested and jailed in August
2016, and his bond was
revoked.
Young women who had
kept quiet began to come
forward.
This past October, Boland
was convicted of multiple
counts of sex with a minor
and other crimes. The sex

girls Boland picked up after
she ran away from a group
home in 2015. Boland was
sentenced to 30 consecutive
years in state prison.
He’s now serving out his
punishment for sex with
one girl, but accusers have
told police he committed
sex crimes against many
others underage girls. One

underage girls” whom
Boland had exploited. The
News-Journal is not using
that woman’s name because
she told police she was a sex
crime victim.
For his part, Boland
testified at his trial that he
“never” had sex with an
underage girl. But a jury,
prosecutor Erica Kane and
State Attorney R.J. Larizza,
all believed otherwise.
Boland’s behavior
followed “a pattern of coer-
cion,” Kane said. “There’s
no way he didn’t know what
he was doing.”
Before sentencing Boland,
Circuit Judge Leah Case
said he made a “calculated
decision” to exploit under-
