HANAMI
Hanami, or flower viewing, first
originated during the Edo Period in
Japan. In March or April when the
cherry blossoms first bloomed, people
would gather together, bringing
elaborate box lunches, wherein they
would eat and drink, and make merry.
Today, people still gather under the
cherry trees at lunch time or in the
evening to eat delicious foods, sip
sake and enjoy themselves.

RICE PLANTING

Spring is the season for planting rice

in Japan. Although in recent years,
many farmers have come to use
machinery for planting rice seedlings.
However, in narrow paddy fields and
places left unplanted by automated
processes the seedlings are planted by
hand, as shown here. Thereafter, the
rice crop is harvested in the autumn.

MOUNTAIN VEGETABLES

As the weather becomes warmer the

grasses and buds of edible wild plants
such as bracken and royal ferns start to
appear. These plants, which are
generally known as "mountain
vegetables," can be cooked and eaten
in various ways, but as the photo
shows, they are also delicious as
tempura.
