TEXT 1

Dear Principal Stephens,

I want to say thank you for the huge difference you made in my life many years ago.

Back in 1990, I was a student at Lincoln High. You were the principal. One day, you
called me into your office. I remember feeling scared! However, you just wanted to give
me some advice. You said,” Marc, you should think of being a teacher.” This was the
first time anyone ever told me that.

So I took child development class, and when I was a senior, I spent time volunteering at
an elementary school as a teacher’s aide. After that, I went to university and majored in
education.

One thing leads to another, and now, many years later, I am a professor at a university
in Japan. I write textbooks and lead teacher workshops around the world. I am one of
those lucky people whose job touches people’s lives.

And I owe this to you. You were the one who aimed me in this work. For that, I want to
say thank you.

Heavy rains that flushed Wasior, West Papua, for days reached their peak
Tuesday, two weeks ago. Since past midnight rain came down ever more mercilessly-
till the dawn came.
Around 8 AM, Frans Sinadi heard a thunderous noise. “Like something falling
from the sky,” he said. Looking for the origin of the rumble, he gasped upon seeing
water coming down fast from Mount Wondiboi towards his house in the Wasior Kota
district. In panic, Frans evacuated his family to higher ground “I heard many people
crying for help,” he recalled.
David, 36, who lived in Waskam, just grabbed whatever clothes he could and ran
uphill for his life. “Everybody ran,” he said “some climbed up to the rooftops, others
were flushed away by the flash flood.” Otis, David’s neighbor, saw large rocks rolling
down in the raging muddy water. “The water level was about 3 meters high,” he said.
Not all managed to escape before the torrent of mud and huge logs destroyed
Wasior. That morning Frans lost his sister, Christina Wasir. Otis sobbed after he failed
to save his son, Ishak Samuel Sampingan, who was only 3 years old.
At least 153 Wasior residents perished in the disaster, over a hundred were
confirmed missing, more than 500 wounded, and thousands displaced. “The forests in
the mountain were destroyed,” said Otis “there were some people cutting trees on the
mountain, but we don’t know who they were.”
Some of the residents indeed suspect that illegal logging in the Mount Wondiboi
nature conservation area was the cause of the flash flood. One Wasior figure, Adam
Arumsore, related the floods occurred previously in 1929 and 1955. Two years ago
another flood inundated the town, but Adam had never seen such a torrent carrying
away huge logs. “This is the biggest flood ever in Wasior,” he said..

Henry Hudson (1565-1611) was an English explorer and navigator who explored
parts of the Arctic Ocean and northeastern North America. Employed by Holland, he
made trips to find a waterway from Europe to India.
In 1609, on a trip in a ship called the Half Moon Hudson found what is now called
the Hudson River. He also discovered Manhattan Island. The Dutch then built a
settlement there and called it New Amsterdam. A governor was appointed, a one-
legged Dutchman, called Peter Stuyvesant. This was too much provocation for the
English settlers. A fleet sent by James, Duke of York, sailed from England and anchored
off New Amsterdam. The town gave in without firing a shot although the governor did
all he could to make his men fight. Later, its name was changed from “New
Amsterdam” to “New York” to honor the royal duke who had financed the invasion.
Hudson sailed into New York’s harbor on September 3, 1609 and noted what an
excellent
harbor it was. He sailed up the river about 150 miles (240 km) and noted the abundance

You must have been aware of the growing need to conserve our forests, One of the
ways to ensure that fewer trees are cut down is by recycling waste paper. This is the
reason why our Conservation Club has embarked n our Old Newspaper Collection
Campaign.
Perhaps you would be interested in knowing what will happen to your old
newspapers after they arrive at the paper recycling center.
‘ Firstly, the old newspapers are soaked in water and then put into the
hydropulper. This machine, which has rotating blades, cuts the paper finely into a pulp.
Next, the pulp is fed into the washer. Here, all dirt is washed off. Staples and clips
are removed. The pulp is then fed into the chemical tank where bleach is added to it.
This whitens the pulp.
After being bleached, the pulp is passed through rollers. All excess water is now
squeezed out of the pulp. This makes the drying process faster. The drying is done in a
dryer. The pulp comes out of the dryer as large sheets of paper, which are rolled on
spools.
This recycled paper is used for many things, for example, to make cardboard
boxes, egg cartons, toilet rolls, poster paper, and even gift wrapping paper. When you
consider that you have no further use for your old newspapers, you will he glad to
contribute them to our campaign.

There is no best way to deal with pests in agriculture. Pesticides are commonly
used, but this may cause many problems. Combining different management operation is the
most effective way to control pests.
Firstly, the chemicals in pesticides may build up as residues in the environment.
This reduces the quality of farm products. Furthermore, pests can gradually become
resistant to pesticides. This means that newer and stronger ones have to be developed.
Some pesticides affect non target animals such as fish and bees. This disturbs the
balance of nature. To wipe out agriculture pests completely may be very expensive.
Sometimes pest damage costs less than the method of control.
Finally, understanding the ecology of the area helps a lot in pest control. Natural
enemies can
be used to control the pest. Pesticides that do not affect the natural enemies should be chosen.
Therefore, integrated pest management is a safe and more effective option in agriculture.

Deathly and dark : The Perfect Harry Potter cliff-hanger
By Chris Tookey
Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part I
Rating : *****

The seventh and penultimate Harry Potter starts with the words: ‘These are dark
times.’ They certainly are. There’s precious little sweetness and light around in this
episode.
Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) is nearing the height of his powers, and Britain
seems to have fallen into the hands of bureaucratic fascists only too eager to do the
Dark Lord’s will. Muggles that’s non-wizards - are being victimised in a way that’s
reminiscent of the Jews in Nazi Germany. Only Harry Potter and his friends can save us
all, by finding four ‘horcruxes’ which will presumably mean the end of the Dark Lord.
And there’s a magic sword to discover.
The aspect of this film that some will find disappointing is that it is essentially the
first half of a treasure hunt. The climax will come with the eighth and last Harry Potter
film. There is not much to cheer about in this seventh episode, and it ends with the
death of one important and much-loved character.
The most praiseworthy aspect of all is that this episode — unlike the one before it
— once again gets Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma
Watson) working as a team. The most memorable sequences in the film are not, for
once, the action scenes but the acting ones. There’s a delightful one where director
David Yates allows Harry and Hermione simply to dance together, in a desperate
attempt to rediscover some fun and human contact in a world that seemingly has room
for neither.
It’s touching and lyrical, two qualities much needed in this film, and increasingly
in the series.
Ron, too, has some good dramatic moments as he comes to terms with his envy of
Harry, and his fear that Harry and Hermione may be destined to be a couple, leaving
him out in the cold.

34. What is mainly discussed in the text above?

A. A love story between Harry Potter and Hermione.
B. The death of Harry Potter.
C. Disappointing aspects of Harry Potter
D. The writer’s view about Harry Potter.
E. The ending of Harry Potter.
35. The following aspects are the good side of the movie, EXCEPT. . ,.
A. the movie is to be continued
B. the main characters work as a team
C. the movie blends adventure and drama
D. the screenplay is touching
E. the movie shows dramatic moments
36. “ . . ., in a desperate attempt to rediscover some fun . . . .“ (paragraph 4)
The underlined word means ….
A. calm B. strong C. hard D. persistent E. hopeless

There are many arguments in favor of boarding school education.
Nevertheless, the boarding school is not always the best education institutions
everyone.
At an early age interacting and communicating with people is very important
for a child’s personal life and can be especially helpful for his/her future. In a
boarding school, shy children can take advantage of interaction through communal
activities. The boarding school also offers a great variety of activities such as art,
sport, and music that allow children to demonstrate and develop specialized skills
in their free time.
Furthermore, the structured way of life and strict rules at the boarding school
may help them to become more responsible and confident and to develop their
talents in leadership. Professionally trained teachers and educators in the boarding
school can offer excellent education without the parents’ constant supervision.
In spite of these good points, it is not advisable to send a child to boarding
school if he/she is a dependent leaner. A boarding school usually demands that
student learn independently. In addition, the boarding school should not be seen as
a measure to solve inappropriate behavior or unsatisfactory study performance.
Instead of improving, problematic children may close off their relationship with
their peers and teachers.
In conclusion although a boarding school may provide good education to
many children, it is not recommended for those who are strongly attached to their
families. They may become frustrated and socially isolated.
37.Why does parents send their children to Boarding School? Because ……
A. it is good for shy children
B. it gives good education for adults
C. interacting an communicating with people is very important
D. it does not allow children demonstrate excellence and develop their skills
E. it is safe and makes children become responsible and develop talents in
leadership
38.From the text, we can conclude that ……
A. the boarding school can be very expensive
B. there are good and bad boarding schools
C. the boarding school is the solution to our educational problems
D. it’s not necessary to send children to a boarding because the student can live in
independently
E. not everyone thinks that the boarding school is the best educational institute for
children
