QUESTION BANK
Part-A (UnitI)
6. Types of fluids.
Ideal fluid, Real fluid, Newtonian fluid, Non-Newtonian fluid, Ideal Plastic fluid.
7. Define Compressibility.
It is defined as the ratio of volumetric strain to compressive stress.
9. Write the expressions for the surface tension on liquid droplet, hollow bubble and liquid jet?
θ = 0 for glass tube and water θ = 130º for glass tube and mercury
Unit-II
11. Mention the range of Reynold’s number for laminar and turbulent flow in a pipe.
If the Reynold,s number is less than 2000, the flow is laminar. But if the
Reynold’s number is greater than 4000, the flow is turbulent flow.
Part-B (Unit 1 )
1.Water is flowing through a pipe of diameter 30cm and 20cm at section 1 and 2 respectively. The rate of flow
through pipe is 35lps. The section 1 is 8m above datum and section 2 is 6m above datum. If the pressure at section 1
is 44.5N/cm2 , find the intensity of pressure at section 2?
2.Calculate the dynamic viscosity of oil which is used for lubrication between a square plate of size 0.8m x 0.8m and
an inclined plane with angle of inclination 30 o. The weight of the square plate is 330N and it slides down the
inclined plane with a uniform velocity of 0.3m/s. The thickness of the oil film is 1.5mm.
3.If the velocity distribution of a fluid over a plate is given by u=ay2+by+c with the vertex 0.2m from the plate,
where the velocity is 1.2m/s. Calculate the velocity gradients and shear stresses at a distance of 0m, 0.1m & 0.2m
from the plate, if the viscosity of the fluid is 0.85Ns/m2?
4.A laminar flow is taking place in a pipe of diameter 200mm. The maximum velocity is 1.5m/s. Find the mean
velocity and the radius at which this occurs. Also calculate the velocity at 5cm from the wall of the pipe?
5.A fluid of viscosity 0.7Ns/m2 and specific gravity 1.3 is flowing through a circular pipe of diameter 100mm. The
maximum shear stress at the pipe wall is given as 196.2N/m2, find the pressure gradient, the average velocity and
Reynold’s number of the flow?
