CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods and procedures that will be using by the researchers. It

presents details about the research method, instrument and data gathering procedure.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers will initiate a qualitative research. Creswell (1994) defines it as an inquiry

process of understanding based on distinct methodological traditions of inquiry that explores a

social or human problem. Researchers build a complex, holistic picture, analyzes words, report

detailed views of informants, and conducts the study in natural setting. To further the study, the

researchers will use descriptive approach wherein it will tackle the questions “what is” and “how”

than the question “why”. Through descriptive, researchers will select respondents to be

interviewed to collect data to assess the behavior of Catholic registered voters residing within

District VI of the City of Manila.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

The researchers will conduct a unstructured type of interview in the registered Catholic

voters under District VI of the City of Manila and to officials of every parish under Archdiocese

of Manila who implements Huwag Kang Magnakaw and Huwag Kang Papatay campaign.

Unstructured type of interview is more flexible depending on the answers of the participants. This

will also let the researchers to ask for clarifications for any vague answers of participants.

SET OF CRITERIA AND PROCESS OF SELECTION

The researchers will be gathering four registered Catholic voters for each barangay with a

total of 16 respondents ranging from 18 years old and above to avoid age discrimination.

Furthermore, the researchers will interview four parish officials from four different parishes in the

area covered by District VI of the City of Manila which implements/implemented Huwag Kang

Magnakaw and Huwag Kang Papatay campaign. Pandacan, San Miguel, Santa Ana and Santa

Mesa will be represented by four parish officials each, for a total of 16 resource persons.

Resource persons will be interviewed in relation to Questions No. 4 and 5 under Statement

of the Problem, as to what problems are they encountering and how they face those problems in

executing Huwag Kang Magnakaw and Huwag Kang Papatay campaign.

SAMPLING PROCESS

The researchers will write a letter of consent and will attach the set of questions to be sent

in respective barangay hall to secure its permission and authority to conduct the interview within

their area. One barangay per are will be selected. One each for Pandacan, San Miguel, Santa Ana

and Santa Mesa. For each barangay have four respondents. Also, four officials of parish that

implements/implemented the campaigns will be interviewed as resource persons for further

information. Four officials each in parish in Pandacan, San Miguel, Santa Ana and Santa Mesa.

persons.

After data collection, the researchers will compile, contrast and analyze the answers given

by the respondents.

METHOD OF ANALYSIS

The researchers will be analyzing the answers that the respondents will be giving

thematically which the researchers will be separating in accordance with the common and

uncommon answers as well as the positive and negative opinions that the respondents will be

giving. For every research question, researchers created big themes and small themes with

description under it. This is to simplify the process and to come with conclusion and synthesis

easily.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Ethics is defined as the values and morals upheld during interaction with others during the

collection of data and the dissemination of findings (Merriam, 1988). Ethical considerations

include conflict of interest, privacy and confidentiality, informed consent process, vulnerability,

recruitment, assent, risks, benefits, incentives or compensation, community consideration and

collaboration study terms of conference.

This study does not have any matters containing conflict of interest. Researchers will not

allow any conflict to arise either from financial, familiar or proprietary matters. This study is purely

for academic purposes only.

The researchers will be ensuring that the opinions, beliefs and adherances that will be

expressing by the respondents will be respected and protected. Researchers will uphold the

respondent’s rights to confidentiality and privacy. The researchers will avoid talking about

sensitive topics, unless given the approval of the respondent itself. The researchers will inform the

to the respective barangay hall and parish to have its permission and authority. After that, the

researchers will personally give letter of consent to 16 respondents who are registered Catholic

researchers will randomly ask if they are Catholic and registered voters of District VI of the City

of Manila.

No assent because the participants are not minors. The study only include registered voters

which are 18 year old and above.

In terms of risks, the study will not compromise the health of the participants. This will not

After the interview, as a form of incentives or compensation as well as gratitude for their

participation, the researchers will give the respondents and resource persons a token of

appreciation such as snacks and souvenir.

The researchers will ensure that the participants will feel comfortable with answering the

questions given to them. The researchers will also ensure that no questions shall violate their
